Comparison - The Killer of Happiness, Great Horsemanship, and Your Relationship With Your Horse
It is so tempting to compare our horsemanship journey with someone else's. That never turns out well.
Hi, I'm Jill! I have been a student of the horse for over 30 years. Delighting in both how we can help horses and how horses can help us.
Perhaps you are like me and feel it in your bones. You know there should be a path with horses (and with life) that doesn’t require dominance. Yet, so often the world tells us otherwise. And, every time we have a setback, there is some naysayer ready to say, “I told you so!” That peer pressure can be so compelling. Without support, it is easy to either drop our goals, and just “hang out” with our horses or keep our goals and give in to the status quo. I...

    So hay has surgar to?? But grass dose to?? I have 2 minis witch ones better lol

    • @bridlesandbreath
      @bridlesandbreath Месяц назад

      Great question! They both have pros and cons. The biggest benefit to using hay is that you can soak it and reduce the sugars. It usually takes about 30% of the sugars out when you soak. As you know, minis have a tough time because they only get to eat so little. Soaking your hay helps, because they can still get the benefits/enjoyment of "chew time", better gut motility, lower sugars, and the lignins to help keep them warm in the winter, but not too much NCS. Plus, I always buy "low sugar" hay from my hay guy. The hay starts below 10% sugars so is usually down to 7% after soaking. The other challenge is the sugar levels in grass vary a great deal throughout the day and the season of the year. There are some very interesting articles about grass for horses on safergrass.org Does that help?

    • @bridlesandbreath
      @bridlesandbreath 4 месяца назад

      That can happen so easily. Especially with our more food focused friends. A great trick for this - is to make the treat - NOT about the action. They get a treat - just for having the conversation. If they do what I am hoping for they get a treat AND if they are just BEing with me they get a treat. Then they don't get so frantic about "how to win." I let my excitement for their behavior be the big reward. You can check out my video about giving treats to learn more. :)

    My mare has DJD in a front fetlock, and struggles to put her weight on that leg long enough for me to trim the opposite hoof. I'm now looking into teaching her to lay down, so I can work on the opposite foot. Any tips would be great! Or any other ideas?? I've tried standing her front legs on a platform (to put her weight onto the hind legs) but she stands on the platform with her weight on the fronts! I think her back legs are a bit arthritic, so she doesn't want to put much weight on them either.

    • @bridlesandbreath
      @bridlesandbreath 9 месяцев назад

      Great question. Sorry, some how I missed this till just now. I haven't actually taught my girls to lay down - it was Fiesta's idea. That being said. I have gained their trust by ALWAYS listening to them when they need back their foot. If they give me the slightest tug I just pop my hand open like a hot potato. Wait a beat, and then ask for it again. It is done wonders to build their trust. I also learned a lot when Fiesta was kicking out at me - so I listened and started trimming a different part of her foot. One of my students has had nice luck, by having her horse stand on a piece of wood that is about 2 inches off the ground. She has him stand with his heels hanging off the back when she wants to trim those and then the toes hanging off the front when she wants to trim those. He is VERY wobbly with some neurological challenges and that seems to work well. Good Luck!

    • @Chrissywalters
      @Chrissywalters 9 месяцев назад

      @@bridlesandbreath hi. Thanks for reply. Since writing the above, i too came up with the idea of standing her good foot on a piece of wood, and filing from underneath. It works pretty well, although I can't clean the hoof out, or check the balance (look at the sole). But we are getting by, doing this. Although I've nearly had my fingers squashed a couple of times, so a bit scary. I've actually got a farrier coming tomorrow, so I'm hoping that i can maybe support my horse's weight a bit, while the farrier whips around the foot quicker than i can.

      @@Chrissywalters Bravo! sounds like you two are doing a great job of working together. Yes, it can be scary when they shift their weight and your fingers are near by!! @@bridlesandbreath hi. Well the farrier visit worked out really well! I gave my mare a painkiller prior to the visit. Then the farrier managed to get the foot done quickly, and completely! I did try to support my mare's weight a little, under her chest, but i don't think i made much difference. But anyway, her feet are now nicely trimmed. So I'll just continue to have the farrier do it.
