One of New Zealand's GREAT Walks | Hiking the Rakiura Track (Stewart Island)
Diverse native birdsong, lush forest, relics of bygone days, beaches and rugged coastlines are all features of this year-round Great Walk!
Located in Rakiura National Park on Stewart Island/Rakiura, this hike is suitable for anyone with a moderate level of fitness. Surrounded by native bush, birds and beach at your side! At night, you'll enjoy world-class star-gazing, and, if you're lucky, you can spot wild Kiwi!

When I was growing up, South Auckland was the place to avoid, in Wellington it's Porirua. You tend to avoid going there due to the possibility of being robbed by either group A or group B. When I was a child, we lived in a neighbourhood with a Maori gang up the road, they used to follow my mother as she walked me to school, would ask her questions about where she was going, then proceed to rob our house while we were away. if you want to live a peaceful life you basically need to live in the countryside away from people, or at least away from poor people with a low education level. Same as everywhere I suppose, but in NZ there is a higher level of brutality I think perpetrated by people who at one time in their history used to be cannibals, or by folks who come from small islands surrounding NZ and have migrated there at some point.

Not a word about the shocking crime statistics? I was literally paralyzed when I compared the statistics for sexual assault with Europe. It is almost ten times as likely to be a victim of a sexual assault in New Zealand than in Germany and still four times as likely as in Great Britain. Same story for other crimes. The number of personal crimes is 38 per 100 adults.

I originate from Auckland, New Zealand, but spent the majority of my life in Dunedin. After completing my university education in 2014, I decided to leave New Zealand. I lived and worked in Poland for several years before eventually settling in Finland. My decision to leave New Zealand was influenced by several factors. One major concern was the skyrocketing housing prices, especially in the Auckland suburb where I grew up. When I first entered the workforce, the cost of purchasing a home had soared to approximately four times what it was during my childhood, making it nearly impossible to afford on a graduate IT worker's salary, which was barely over a tenth of the property's cost. Additionally, maybe a cultural aspect, but there is a lack of intellectual depth and or wider cultural awareness among most people. If intellectual stimulation is important to you, it can be disappointing.

I'm a Kiwi (also Maori) but my Partner is Finnish and she refuses to stay in Finland because I'd have to learn the language (can pick it up in a convo now and then, just not fluent) but the lack of sun is another factor. Especially for the vitamin D's! I agree with the lack of 'intellectual stimulation' eespecially since I tease her Finns are a nation of Computer nerds and us Kiwis are way more laid back about things. Probably too much.ALSO, Kiwi dairy is top in the world but our cheese IS crap. Finland at least has good cheese that there is a black market for it in Russia!

Whitestone in Oamaru makes cheese, should be available in Chch at a supermarket. gibston Valley through the kawarau gorge on the way to Queenstown from Cromwell has good cheese thats locally made and a really awesome blue cheese that doesn't taste like a french gumboot😂

Hi! Limes: buy bottled lime juice. Make friends with someone up North who has a lime tree. Only posh people buy lime fruit. Weather: dry your clothes inside or under an overhang. Wear a hat, carry an umbrella. Here! Earthquakes: don't worry about it. You'll know when to worry! Cheese: Eat Mainland Aged Cheddar (also known as 'Noble'). An alternative is to buy a big block of Colby or Edam and let it sit in the fridge for a month or so. It'll age out to a strong cheese. Or you could heavily salt your food. Isolation: It's called the 'Tyranny of Distance'. That's why we travel a lot. Transportation: yes it sucks and will get worse. They want us to ride bikes now!!

Animals of course have to be quarantined, there are diseases we do not have here. Our agriculture is a main export earner. Dogs are not allowed everywhere shops etc unless they are guide dogs or other service dogs. No animals are allowed in National Parks there are fines for this. Only especially trained dogs that can be authorized by Dept of Conservation. Holiday Visa may take time depending on where you come from, there are 8 countries from Asia eg. Japan, 6 from South America eg.Chile, 2 from Middle East and the rest from North America and much of Europe. I think no African countries or South East Asian eg. India are certified for this type of visa.

Kia ora to you two too! Thanks for the tourist promo - but don't forget Tūranga! I think it is spectacular, after the rebuild. (Between Square and Gloucester St.) And, for those with tamariki, try Tākaro-a-Poi Margaret Mahy Playground (Armagh / Gloucester by the Ōtākaro Avon river). Free, and plenty to do for all ages :-)

Regarding food prices: Try and avoid the Woolworths and Foodstuffs duopoly on supermarkets and shop elsewhere for as much as you can. Farmer's markets, local butchers, Supie, the Warehouse, etc.

@@CarisAndEdwhy didn't you convey this in your video? You sound like a 'whinging pom!' I'm an Australian. You might be too young to know about the term whinging pom. Basically, it's a term Australian people called English people who moved to Australia and who could not stop complaining about Australia and Australian life. Our attitude was, not happy here? Go home to England!! Your video contradicts your statement that says you and your husband are happy living in Christchurch. I was so put off visiting NZ whilst listening to your story of living there, I was also very surprised. It's so pretty. How could life be so bad there? I started thinking about it's suicide rate, which is possibly the highest in the world. Your summation of NZ life was very low. Please be more positive. If not, go home!!! You will be 60 before you know it.❤❤ Life is not meant to be this bad.
