This Organ Was In A Cow Shed?! | Organ Chats | Episode 8
Today, we explore the Model F Wurlitzer organ housed at Paul Kirner's Music Palace in Ynyshir, Porth, South Wales. This 1926 Wurlitzer originally graced the Picture House in Leicester, opened by organist Jack Courtney. In 1938, it was sold and relocated to The Exchange Cinema in Northampton, where it remained until 1957. Subsequently, Mr. Johnson acquired the organ, installing it in his cowshed. Later, Mike Candy purchased the organ for his private residence. Following Mike's passing, the organ found a new home at the Music Palace in 2016. It is affectionately known as the "Candy".

Ritz Cinema Barnsley Wurlitzer | Organ Chats | Episode 7
Просмотров 1,4 тыс.21 день назад
Today, we examine a 1937 Wurlitzer Organ that was originally installed in the Ritz cinema in Barnsley. The organ was inaugurated by organist Robinson Cleaver, but it is most closely associated with Trevor Willetts, who served as the resident organist from 1943 to 1962. The organ was removed in 1969, prior to the cinema's closure and subsequent demolition. The Wurlitzer now resides in a private ...

    I remember hearing this organ when it was installed in the Marsden Green Hospital, it had an electronic melotone attachment & the horn/speaker for this was hung up in the roof trusses, a powerful sound in that relativity small room.

    Jesse Crawford certainly had his own distinctive playing style. But while quite a few aficionados consider him to be at the pinnacle of theatre pipe organ players, I've always thought he was rather overrated. Some outstanding subsequent organists have been able to play circles around him, a number of them still performing.

    Lovely WurliTzer. When I visited the Brentford Music museum about a hundred years ago it was in an old church building and the 3/12 Wurli was demonstrated using a player system so that`s another one.

      That's a different organ. That one came from the Regal, Kingston-Upon-Thames, and it's now in the 'new' Musical Museum building in Brentford and still sounds incredible.

    Very nice Blackpool sound! Close your eyes, and it could be the Tower Ballroom? What always saddens me was that we lost the Empress Ballroom/ BBC playhouse Wurlitzer with this installation as it was cannibalised to enlarge the organ! I can remember the original Organ a 3/10 at Buckingham town hall that was installed by a friend, David Pawlyn. The organ was removed sometime later as it was water damaged in the town hall .Nobody wanted to spend money on Theatre organs back then? A man with a vision was Jim Buckland, and he found a home for it at Worthing .The rest is history.

    • @OrganMusicYT
      @OrganMusicYT Месяц назад

      The sound of the instrument is quite different from the Tower Wurlitzer, despite having similar registrations. It is understandable, as the ranks have been revoiced from their original voicing by Wurlitzer. It is unfortunate that what I would have considered one of, if not the most important instruments in theatre organ history was destroyed to create this one. What's even more infuriating is that Blackpool Winter Gardens did contact Jim Buckland after he purchased the former Tower/Empress Wurlitzer intending to buy it and re-install it in the Empress Ballroom - they realised their mistake. In any case, Jim Buckland did not sell it to them and proceeded to break it up for parts that could have easily been sourced elsewhere. Nevertheless, let's focus on enjoying Alec's excellent performance on the current instrument.

    The Compton organ has very creamy tones compared to the punchy tones of Wurlitzers. Both lovely in their own right!
