The history of Ernest Wright reflects everything Sheffield Steel has become famous for. Highly skilled craftsmen making supreme quality scissors & shears. A lot has changed since the heydays of manufacturing, but we’re proud to be here and able to pass on the heritage of an ancient craft.
In today’s world, where everything is moving quickly across multiple screens, we see a renewed interest in real, supreme quality products that reflect -and deserve- the love and attention that has been put into them. And judging by the fantastic emails we receive from people around the world, we are confident that we can bring Ernest Wright back to its former glory and keep the heritage alive. Doing it the Wright way!

Steel Making History of Sheffield
In 2023, Farzeen Nasser, a journalism student at Sheffield Hallam University, created a documentary on Sheffield's rich steel-making history for her final master's project. She visited several heritage companies across the city and interviewed individuals who are still passionately involved in the steel industry today.

Ernest Wright featured in ITV4's "Made in Britain" October 2019

The craft of making scissors and shears by hand was born in this context. By the 19th century there were 60 steel scissor companies in Sheffield. Workshops and outworkers supported each other, with some specialising in different stages of production. Tens of thousands of men worked to craft products that would be shipped throughout the British Empire and beyond. In all corners of the globe, ‘Ma...
Ernest Wright Scissors Workshop Tour and Interview 2023

The artisan scissors-makers (known as ‘putters’) at Ernest Wright, Sheffield, explain some of the physical qualities, characteristics and crafting processes that go into a fine pair of handmade scissors - as well as providing some background on Sheffield’s steel and cutlery heritage. This short film by Toby Essex follows putters Jonathan, Neil, Sam, James and Tony on a scissors workshop tour, a...
What’s the difference between right-handed and left-handed scissors?
Просмотров 5 тыс.3 года назад
Left-handed and right-handed scissors are mechanical mirror images. When a person squeezes a pair of scissors to cut something, they exert force in two directions. The first force that springs to mind is vertical pressure, but we also exert a lateral squeeze, with the thumb pushing slightly away from the palm, which has always defined how scissors are engineered. Scissors are designed to use th...
HOW TO LOOK AFTER YOUR SCISSORS

Please note that Scissor blades can be very sharp - please be extremely careful with your hands and fingers!! After use, always wipe your carbon-steel scissors clean and dry, and store them away from any water, salt or humidity. It is preferable to store these wrapped (or encased) in dry cloth, dry leather, or a dry cardboard box, to protect them from airborne moisture. (N.b. this covers most o...

I have a brand new pair of 10” shears and they feel very grainy and tight right away. Why is this?
Did you saw this video? We explained it. After whipping it it should be gone.
@ is it normal that it returns almost immediately? I’m wiping them between almost every cut
@ depends on the fabric I guess. It is the micro dust created by the cut. If you think it is something else please reach out to our support desk: info@ernestwright.co.uk.
My friend Shaun Bloodworth (RIP) made a short film on this incredible art, 10 years ago ruclips.net/video/PWRw_6StpQQ/видео.htmlsi=LjVE80S0rFy33ocd featuring the retired master putters!
Thank you!
this is definitely the coolest pair scissors i've ever seen
I am not wealthy, but when I see something handmade and done well, I try to contribute how I can. I purchased the hummingbird embroidery scissors. I use them for more than that, and the angle, tension, feel, and motion is excellent. Love the handmade look and feel. Great presentation, again. Unfortunately I cannot justify buying much more, but the product, presentation, and quality make me happy to contribute just a bit to this company. If I knew before, I wouldn't have restored antique American scissors(Blue Ribbon Cutlery is one of the best tailor scissors I've ever used), and Ghinger for upholstery, large tailor scissors(I use for veneer), and general purpose sheers. I did the repair(putting) myself. I restore antiques for a living, so I know the secrets to a perfect assembly and performance (no, can't move to Sheffield to help. lol). As perfect as handmade can be. Proud to have all handmade scissors, whether US, English, or German. I may just yet buy some Wright upholstery sheers once in stock. Tough decision considering the German ones I worked on took me a day before the slick "shhhhh-chic" and testing on thread to folded up towels. Back to tip had to cut flawlessly before I stopped working on the blade's angles and sharpening. They had been poorly sharpened and the blades bowed too much to keep a small distance at the back when closing (leaving a gap pinching fabric). When done they sound like Wright scissors. Heck, I'll buy a pair at some point sooner than later. Never know when the German upholstery sheers might get angry and snap. Haha To anyone with their grandfather's scissors, please do not just peen them tighter or tighten the screw if they are in bad shape. Take them apart, stone sharpen to a fine edge, then get to work carefully putting the blades with a composite mallet or brass hammer(if needed). Use a leather pad to rest the blade where the issue is and gently get the contact perfect.
And thank you, Wright Cutlery! From Alabama with respect, -Your friendly neighborhood antiques restorer.
I want a pair just from watching this video.
Go get a pair! After seeing this, I ordered a set for myself from Alabama. The hummingbird scissors from their direct website. The presentation is wonderful. I've restored high end US and German scissors for most of my antiques restoration work, but to support this company I purchased the beautiful hummingbird embroidery scissors. They are great for small general use. Inexpensive and utilitarian. The only improvement they could make? Go back to punching the brand and model. The laser etch was the only very small disappointment.
I love my pair of EW Tailor's shears, thank you for showing the behind the scenes and the craftmanship that goes into them!
Looks easy, but these are amazing skills and a joy to see. It would be a tragedy for these businesses to be forced into closure.
Still going strong❤
15 year apprenticeship to learn to hammer a pin and straighten a pair of scissors. And he's still learning after 50 odd years..
Mastery isn't just about time; it's about the depth of understanding and the commitment to perfection over a lifetime.
Is it ok to oil the joint? Probably not for tailors scissors for obvious reasons, but on general purpose and diy scissors?
Yes n problem. We recommend Camellia oil or Sewing Machine Oil. Avoid using heavy oils or anything that could attract dirt or gunk up the mechanism. A few drops applied to the joint, followed by opening and closing the scissors a few times to work the oil in, is usually all that's needed. Wipe off any excess oil to keep the scissors clean.
Im proud to be born and bread in Sheffield minutes walk from all the steel and cutlery works, i grew up in netherthorpe in the early 70's and down broad lane to kelham island area was my playground, always had the smell of hot steel and banging from the hammers in the forges. Glad to see earnest wright still carrying on the tradition of scissor making in the heart of Sheffield ✂️❤
Only 300 pairs per month.
We are now making around 1.000 a month. At least that is our goal.
@@ErnestWrightScissors - I'm glad to hear that - Those are quality, gorgeous scissors, that bring back memories of my late mother, back in Baghdad, Iraq - with her Singer Sewing Machine & a beautiful pair of Ernest Wright Scissors, that she swore by, and would not use anything else but.
Wow! In Baghdad! Love the story❤
Love it ! <3
I'll admit, this video about 10 years ago on vimeo made me order a pair. They're everything the video makes them out to be and more. Absolute heirloom quality kitchen shears. Go buy some. They'll outlive you.
Buen Feeling...........-------👈👍🏼. Saludos desde España @donfilo59😊
Just got my Kutrite, and will be using and putting it through its paces in my professional kitchen, so far so good, they’re beautifully made and love the substantial weight on them too
"If you love your job, you will never work a day in your life" - this is another inspirational video. Thank you.
Wish you did a barber scissor. I would have loved a pair.
Chinese garbage is taking over. Not if i can help it.
I own two pair of your scissors, and every time I use them, I think of the craftsmanship that goes into them. They are truly a marvel. Thank you.
I’ve just received my second order & love these scissors! Where do the raw scissor halves come from? Who forges them & is that also in Sheffield?

Some patterns are forged in Sheffield in the late 80s and early 90s. Others are forged in Germany and Italy as usual for 100+ years.

I used to collect a lot of various mass-production scissors, because they would stop cutting over time and I had to grab a new pair. Since purchasing my Ernest Wrights, that has stopped and it seems that now I have the only scissors I will ever need. I look forward to ordering the large shears and adding them to EW collection.
True craftsmanship 👌
A good video, but it didn't move me as much as the original video they made a few years back, when the 'old boys' were still making them (ruclips.net/video/PWRw_6StpQQ/видео.html). Truly, that was a great video, even just thinking about it now moves me.
I could not agree more - the original video, instigated by Nick Wright to record the skills employed , it went viral. What followed is well documented and the business is on a much firmer footing. I suspect that neither Nick or Shaun, both no longer with us could have foreseen what impact the video would have to this very day.
I hope you have again, in the future back the duckbill scissors and the curved shank ones.
I hope to be able to pick up a pair of the 8.25" fabric scissors and general purpose scissors in the near future. Keep up the great work!
It's great to see the traditional scissor making skills passed on kept alive, long may it continue ✂️
Those Heritage shears are pure Art. So glad The Masters passed on their skills.
Simply magnificent to use. I treasure mine and enjoy them every time I take them in hand.
👍👍👍👍👍
Yes, I paid upfront. Yes, I waited about half a year. Yes, I would do it again. The pair of Turton’s I have got will outlast me. The sound, the smoothness, the satisfaction. Simply awesome and I hope that they’ll go on making scissors for a long time. This is the kind of product that’s needed. No plastic and lasting forever. Buy once, cry once. Highly recommended.
Rest in Peace Nick. Trully tragic. Im glad the business is still in operation though.
Gunna get two pairs of 6.5" General Purpose scissors here next year. Im stoked, not only for the quality, but for the soul put into each scissor. Didn't know there were shops like this still around. There is no shortcut to quality, craftmanship, and soul. You get what you pay for.
This brought tears to my eyes. As a tradesman with decades of experience I take a lot of pride in the tooling I make with my hands and to watch someone work with such skill and precision, where no motion is wasted and every glance, every turn, every tap is with purpose is a joy to behold. I have a keen understanding of how the decades of experience make it look much much simpler than it is and nothing but respect for these people who work to keep alive this noble and honored business. I just ordered my first pair as a wedding gift for my nephew and expect to be ordering a pair for myself soon as well.
Wonderful. Lovely video. I ordered a Turton on June 25th, I Can’t wait to receive them!
⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I saw this video on face book at first , which led me here to watch all the other scissors and shears films out there .... I now own 5 pair of Ernest Wright’s. Plan to own them all ..They are quite simply a joy to use and own. One snip and you’ll be bewitched too !
I own 3 pairs , with 2 more on the way , the Turtons are fantastic. I have recently bought their rivals Kitchen shear from William Whiteley they are good very good , but Ernest Wright are Perfect in every way so much more attention to detail the finish is flawless ...they are on another level ! Patiently waiting for the re- imagined Kutrite and a new batch of 13inch to complete my little collection. And all because I saw a Video ” The Putter “
Are we going to just ignore the fact that he is standing next to Doctor Who at 1:50 ?
Dangerfield sent me…
In a world of mass production, it gives me a great sense of nostalgia knowing that there are still companies that make high quality products by hand. It reminds of Nokona Baseball gloves that still does the same in Texas. I’ve ordered two pairs of the Turton scissors and I can’t wait for them to arrive. I encourage everyone to get behind companies like this.
Thank you! You have to wait a few weeks at least since we are still on a limited capacity. On instagram you can follow the progress.
