    I'm waiting for the day airtightness gets connected between the block faces... But as is, it's already expensive enough so I doubt they will ever introduce directionality to it. I build an airtight docking tunnel with that trick, basically a tube you can stick between ships without venting athmo. The key is to have a "separator" in the middle and two airtight compartments on either side so they get passively supplied from both ships.

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV 13 дней назад

      Neat idea, I haven't tried anything like a tunnel. Mostly I use the oddly airtight blocks to secretly break up the interior of my ships, or fool-proof airlocks.

    My first trip to space was done with a shuttle that I designed specifically for the transition between planet-side and space. It has two large atmo thrusters pointing down, it’s set up for full atmospheric control (small thrusters in every other direction) and with a load of cargo, launching with the atmospheric is a bit slow, but once I begin to decelerate, I rotate upward 90° and fire the hydrogen thrusters. There are 3 large hydrogen thrusters on the back and they have no trouble putting me in space. Of course I have 4 large hydrogen tanks too, so I may be using more fuel than I realize. Figured why not carry a lot.

    • @ShiftyshadowTV

    I’m not saying you’re doing thruster override wrong but you’re understanding of thruster override is wrong and you’re presenting it as such. Thruster override ride wording is misleading I think that’s the problem. It seems like it’s overriding your input but it’s overriding the idle input. So let’s say you’re hovering at 36kn of power. Now let’s say you could use thruster over ride to turn them down to 35kn. You would very slowly fall out of the sky. But now you decide you don’t want to fall than you hit space bar for let’s say 10 seconds. Ypu would shoot up in the sky at 400kn thrust not 35kn. So this is equivalent in real life of setting your car cruise control at 35 mph then pushing the gas peddle to the floor speeding up to 80 mph as quickly as it would with out Cruze on. So with this information the way you did it and everyone else is doing it would be like setting your cruise control at 80 stopping at a stop sign then turning on Cruze from a dead stop. The correct way to do it is accelerate than set Cruze. If you ever seen a toddler try to drink from a cup with a bunch of ice in it. They tip it back and back and back till the ice comes crashing into their face and they spill the drink all over themselves. I’m not saying you’re doing this wrong in the same way I’m not saying that baby is drinking from a cup wrong.

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV 16 дней назад

      Thruster override is not like cruise control, aside from that they both involve setting a number to be constant. Those numbers have different units, and very different implications. Cruise control automatically varies your force to keep you at the same speed (regardless of hills, etc.). Thruster override keeps you outputting a specific force (at minimum) with no regard to your speed. The point made in this video is that if you are using thruster override at maximum speed, while exiting gravity you will be burning more fuel than you need to. This is because you are exiting gravity. The further you go, the less thrust you need to maintain maximum speed. You can turn down your thruster override, sure, but you're not doing to do it perfectly. To use the car analogy, you're keeping your foot on the gas even though you've hit a truck in front of you and cannot possibly go faster. Sure, you ease up on the gas, but you're going down a hill and the hill is getting steeper every second. You need to constantly be reducing your thrust.

    Why does noone use self-righting arms? They work on stuff like Battlebots. All they are is a hinge and line of blocks mounted sideways as a lever to roll your rover back onto it's wheels. Sure, they wouldn't work in every situation, but I never see them.

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      Self-righting arms are great in real life, and I'm sure some people use them. I think there are just better options in SE. I cannot answer for others, but here's why I don't use arms. 1) I always build rovers which can right themselves using their gyroscopes. Yes, all my rovers have gyroscopes. The control they give you in the air and on steep slopes will help you avoid 99% of rolls in the first place. 2) If you roll hard, and you don't have a recessed or highly fortified arm it will likely be damage beyond the point of usefulness. 3) If you fall into a spot with walls, or end up in a pinch or on a side, your arm may not be able to right you (at least not an a simple hinge and a line of blocks). More complicated arms could get you out, but they're more likely to break with the initial roll. 4) Adding subgrids makes rovers (or any grid) less stable.

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      I will say, I have used crane arms to right myself plenty of times, and I've seen others use them that way too. It's probably the most likely situation you'll see someone use anything like a self-righting arm.

    Did this turn out well? Or did it need an overhaul to be better balanced/fun?

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      We did quite a few 1v1 dogfights with it and found that (with good flying) it could run out of ammunition before you shot each other down. It's hard to score a lot of critical hits because the front is rather tanky and you're almost always facing each other. In large group battles where you could get surrounded it was better. Many of the ships were downed because someone crashed into the ground while trying to shake multiple followers, or while chasing (which was funny). To reduce the likelihood of running out of ammo before being shot down we changed all the gatlings to autocannons. This meant you need to hit the same spot less often to break blocks, which resulted in more people being shot down. It reduces your overall firing time though, so it changed the strategy from firing constantly to only when you're pretty sure you will score hits. Overall a healthy change. The auto cannons are also much more satisfying to listen to. The only downside is that the two positioned in front of the cockpit obscure your view while firing if you're in first person.

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      This build also inspired entire set of small combat ships. Here they are: (The Raven is my favorite.) steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2932233902

  • @blakekendall6156
    @blakekendall6156 Месяц назад

    Extending a piston with a welder wall at the end is no more complicated a system than this, and you have the benefit of every component of the printing system remaining static in relation to one another, which allows for automated mass production, say of a drone army. If you want the benefit of being able to move components of your printing system, stick hydrogen thrusters on it and dock it at your base. None of these things are complicated at all, they're just larger scale.

    Very good video, but there are certain blocks recommended here that are typically best not used on a small grid rover unless you are playing on a rovers only server. When building in a typical survival scenario, you should try to avoid any blocks that require materials other than your basic 3 you get from rocks (iron, silicon, & nickel); so, it's best not to include thrusters or heavy armor in your designs as those will likely not be available yet when you go to make one of these. Yes, they are nice blocks to have, but small grid rovers are mainly an early game vehicle for before you have access to cobalt. Once you have cobalt and can build an atmospheric thruster and heavy armor, anything this small makes more since as an aircraft.

      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      I agree, if you're just looking to tech up as fast or efficiently as possible. Your starter pod even comes with enough materials for a basic flying scout. So no need to build a rover at all. However; this videos is about building better rovers, not starter rovers. There are plenty of people who enjoy rolling around regardless of the tech level they've reached (myself included).

      You're right, using event controllers for the pulsing is a major improvement. I didn't think of it until the many comments about them on this video. They're great.

    I'd suggest making a gravity generator field that nullifies the gravity in the area beneath the ship, but this uses energy...

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      Last I checked gravity generators don't work in planetary gravity. (Their strength decreases as P-Gravity increases.) Otherwise that would be great for all sorts of applications.

      @@FryGuy- Yes, ships require artificial mass blocks. Perhaps they work in gravity, I never use them, so I don't know off the top of my head.

    If you turned all other thrusters off in the flight ai except for the thrusters up if it would improve efficentcy due to the ai using the side thrusters constantly

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      When I tested this I tried that. The AI constantly turned all my thrusters back on. Also, it completely doesn't work if you don't have at least one thruster in each direction.

  • @wildmonkies

    Great video, but I went overboard and did the math. Also, a well optimized flight program should result in a burn of 52838 Liters of fuel. This is done by restricting the thrust to a specific value, based on the experienced gravity value, that would allow for a constant velocity of 100 m/s without accelerating or decelerating. I see other pulsing methods, but it is way more tedious and larger range of error.

    • @ShiftyshadowTV
      @ShiftyshadowTV Месяц назад

      Cool to know the optimal value for fuel use! I'm happy that it's pretty close to what I got in a few of the tests (~5% difference). Certainly close enough for me to feel good using them.

    You can get around the whole printing subgrid issue by just using plugins which I strongly recommend doing. Skipping the intro video, printing multiple grid ships, and being able to do stuff like send camera feeds to LCDs opens up a lot of options in the game. Sorta like running build view and colored icons.
