I'm so sorry to hear that you are experiencing a lot of severe pain. It is so debilitating. In scenarios where a dentist cannot find what is wrong with the tooth but has severe symptoms, it might suggest the tooth is cracked. Xrays typically don't always show cracks either. It is very difficult to diagnose. In most cases if a tooth needs a root canal, there is a cause and effect relationship. For example, there is a large cavity that is close or has entered the pulp chamber leading to a toothache and pain. A crack tooth could be the cause and the effect is a tooth ache suggesting the need for a root canal. On the rare occasion, the cause and effect relationship is not obvious, but the tooth needs a root canal in the end. Sometimes things cannot always be explained. In cases where the diagnosis of the tooth in question is not quite known, sometimes taking some antibiotics can help reduce pain indirectly. The way this works is the antibiotics helps reduce the infection pressure at the root tip. Typically in those situations, the pain almost goes away. If so, then the diagnosis is the tooth needs a root canal. If the constant pain goes away, but the biting pain is still severe and sharp, then the tooth is most likely cracked. Not all cracked teeth can be saved with a root canal procedure. In cases where the diagnosis is not known, referring to an endodontist is helpful to get another set of eyes on the case (because the symptoms are typically the same or very similar).. The specialist can help do root canal procedures, and they also help out diagnosing cracked teeth. I hope this helps explain a bit about how dentists diagnoses cases of some complexity. UW is respected as a good dental school. Keep in mind, that if you see a root canal specialist at the university, you might be seeing a endodontic resident (endodontist in training--they have already graduated dental school and most likely have a few root canal procedures completed under their belt). The residents are typically watched over by licensed endodontists. Find out the true diagnosis and therefore the proper treatment will help put your mind at ease. It is all the unknowns and questions you may have that might be contributing to worrying and fear. Try to get some answers as soon as you can. I'm sure the dental school there has emergency services and you can maybe get seen quicker than trying to schedule an emergency appointment with the endodontic department, but it is worth a try first. I hope this helps. Try to get some rest and work on it tomorrow.

I'm so sorry to hear about your tooth's condition. I cannot give professional advice, but in a similar situation where the structural integrity of the tooth is compromised, a root canal procedure might not be necessary or might be a waste of time, money, and effort. A root canal procedure will not re-establish the structural integrity of your tooth. And, if the tooth is so broken down where a crown they would like to do on top of the tooth will be so challenging and difficult, then the conclusion typically is the tooth cannot be saved. I cannot say if you will miss the tooth if the tooth is removed. Time will let you know. You would not be the only one in the world missing that tooth. In the end, the decision is always yours and as a dental professional, my job is to advise you of treatment possibilities and carry out the treatment you decide on. ​@@GregThe2thpreneurThank you sir. Probably just get it extracted. It's one tooth after all and it's gonna be way easier, cost far less and there's guaranteed no further issue to be had because it will be gone. Aside from potential dry socket or bacterial infection should be OK right ?

In the scenario where the tooth is deemed non-restorable, then removal is the choice. I agree that once removed, there will be no future issue. We definitely don't wish dry socket for anyone. In the event the tooth is removed, it is recommended to just take it easy for the rest of the day. Infections typically can be avoided by taking antibiotics prior to and after the tooth removal. I wish you luck! Take this opportunity to take care of the rest of your teeth and get regular check ups to catch these problems earlier where it typically is easier to fix. Maybe with the money saved, you can treat yourself to those check ups! I hope what ever treatment you decide, I hope it turns out uneventful.

Everyday, financial issues get more and more serious. It makes you completely hopeless and frustrating. This is why even with my dental salary I was getting left behind. I can't work any more. Same here! My son is about ready to go to college in a couple of years. I slave away as a single family income/earner 5 days a week. I totally agree that I too missed being a parent and there is NO price tag on that. 💯 At the same time, I want the very best for my kids, and I think they know that too. Kimberly, I'm so sorry to hear. Totally happy to listen. I'm sorry it has taken me a bit of time to respond. I wanted to make sure after work I had some quiet time to write this. When I read your message, it made me feel very sad and I hope that your life will turn around very soon. You seem like you are doing the best you can given your situation. Hang in there! Hang in there for your daughter! Protect your daughter. Try not to dwell on the negative energy coming from your mother. Strive to be better than her and for your daughter. Refocus that negative energy toward the goals you have set. Keep reminding yourself staying in your mother's guest bedroom is just a means to a brighter end. Keep saving. While saving, keep those goals in mind and you'll get to them much faster. Repeat those goals every morning so you can remain focus on them. I know you are a great mother because you want your daughter to have a better life than you have. You're fighting a fight that feels like you will never win, but keep pushing. I hope you can get into this digital space sooner than later. I don't know how old you daughter is, but maybe she could learn the tech side of this business and you guys can help each other. It might be a great bonding time! I do have a little computer background experience and it has helped out, but it's all learnable. I think if you figured out how to use your smart phone, you can do this tech stuff. The software we use is easy to learn and implement. If you put your mind into it and have that drive and determination (which I know you do), I know you can overcome the tech concerns. These course we buy have a lot of cookbook step by step instructions that are easy to follow along to set up the tech stuff.
