A very chill Coopers Hawk
This rather cute Cooper Hawk, after terrorizing the birds at my feeders here in Hereford, AZ, decided to just hang out right outside my office window and grab some sun after a rainy morning. When you see him fly off at the end, he actually just flew up onto my roof and stayed there for another 15 minutes before finally flying off.

On a recent sunset drive along the Black Point Wildlife Drive at Merritt Island NWR, I came upon a small pond where a Great Egret, Great Blue Heron, and Wood Stork were all feeding together. There was also a Little Blue Heron who sadly flew off just as I started filming this from my car window, But what a sight!

Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Ribbon cutting ceremony for the West Pond loop trail reopening

Today, 4 1/2 years after Superstorm Sandy, the JBWR had an official ribbon cutting ceremony to open the repaired West Pond trail that was breached. As members of the American Littoral Society, my wife and I were on hand to volunteer to participate in the cutting, although they didn't give me the giant scissors! Kudos to the Superintendent of Gateway National Recreation Area, Jennifer Nersesian,...

Amazing capture! The bird must have been hungry, it looked like she gulped down that big (do you know what kind?) fish live too! I wonder, would the unlucky prey stand any chance of escaping the bird's elastic neck/stomach if eaten in that condition?!

Thanks for the comments. Not being much of a fish guy I can’t say for sure what kind of fish this was, but although my video was not very long, the bird was working on getting its meal down for a few minutes before I started filming. As for escape, I would say once it’s down that muscular neck it’s lights out.

Oh interesting! It looked like a quite a sizable fish, the Loon have been hungry! Still, it seems difficult to me that the bird can fully deal with this thing! I have never witnessed an event like this before. The loon's expandable neck did seem to take the thing in quite quickly! I feel somewhat perplexed over how it actually happens, wouldn't the fish stand a chance of turning around or damaging (that large tail, wriggling, biting, etc.) the bird's stomach/throat if eaten in that condition?! It’s hard for me to imagine that the potential prey (wouldn't it also go into a desperate "survival mode" once it realized that it hit the stomach?) could be kept down. I don't have much knowledge about it and am mostly curious, I appreciate any feedback/explanation. Sorry for all of the questions, have a good week ;)
