CJ2A and Copart TJ. Potential Resto Mod? Is it possible?
probably should could plug that breather hole on the driver side axle tube and locate it thigh up on the diff cover.
I am facing the similar issues on my 86 CJ5. My welding skills are none. I would love to see a follow up video on your project. Thanks for taking the time to do this!
Very good work, your contect no. add send me
Very good work
Super sir sooper😅
What's the name of this sealant, please?
Antenna tower next to your shop radio operator which call sign this is Kd7ihg
When you put it back together, hope you matched each side with the number on the cap and number on the housing, not only that but, which ever way the number is turned on the housing, the number on the cap needs to be in the same direction and opposite each other!
The guy was exactly right on the rear differential caps, they should be oriented like the caps on your front differential, numpers to numbers, letters to letters, punch marks to punch marks, the rear ones were flipped upside down, you got them back right like they left the factory when you flipped them to match!
*promosm* 😡
Buy a New Chrome one!
I’m at the exact same spot on my ‘46! Passenger side nut no problem but I’ve been at that drivers side forever. Heading out for one of those ratchet/wrenches tonight!! Thanks for the vid!
dont scrape somebody buy off ya lol
Nice work bud 👍. I have to pinion bearings, so going to do all. I also would rather spend money on the axle, not pullers and expensive tools, might try your method for hubs first.. anyways thank you
It’s worth a shot, but be careful not to damage anything! I’ve since bought a couple Harbor Freight puller sets. Low cost/lower quality, but they’ve done fine for what little I use them so far. Good luck on your project!!
Do you happen to have link for the tool you mentioned? I’m rebuilding the rear right now. About to start on the front end hopefully by next week
Here is the link, it’s available a lot of places. Shop around if you’re interested in finding the best price. Omix-Ada | 16711.01 | Axle Spindle Nut Socket | OE Reference: A-692 | Fits 1972-1986 Jeep CJ5 / CJ6 / CJ7 / CJ8 Scrambler a.co/d/bxqFFAL
They make 6 sided sockets!
Was that Rick Rudd or Brett Bodine on the Quaker State car?
I’m not sure to be honest. They were too far away for me to see the name clearly… I’m sure Mike Joy mentioned it also, but I didn’t catch it
The guy who made buccees came from my town! Yet we don’t have one in our state..
We’ll that just isn’t right! Something tells me they have a rapid expansion plan though!
The Walmart, tire center, airport, hair salon gas station
It seems they have it all!!
Good to see the old Winston logo in racing.
Yes it is, they did a really good job preserving the cool stuff and put on some great races!
How did the home made yoke puller work? Or did the yoke just slip out after removing yoke nut with an impact ?
I didn’t make it that far on them yet. Waiting to see if I can come across a reasonably priced body and engine within driving distance… Working on a 1979 CJ7 Renegade in the interim!
Well, it's promising ! Maybe, if you can get one, wire in a pushbutton starter switch. I think that might eliminate the headaches of having to have a key to start it up.
Didn’t really think of that. I have a new lock set here with keys for the column. Hopefully it’ll all come together good as new for the column soon!
I like these older vehicles where you don't need to deal with transponder keys or security modules. Looking forward to the next Jeep video.
Me too! Screwdriver “key” worked just fine. And we have almost all the parts here to rebuild the steering column! More on that later. Thanks for watching!!
I'm about to have to go through the same journey on my rear differential.
My advice, use a gear puller! I just got lucky… Good luck on yours and thanks for watching!
Very cool find! I just got done with a 85 CJ7 that was in about the same shape and really enjoyed the process of getting it back. I am always looking for my next project Jeep. Good luck. Very cool!
It’s definitely a challenge but a lot of fun along the way! Thanks for watching!!
I wouldn’t worry about the frame, thing will twist like a mofo when you off-road anyway, needs to have some flexibility. Dog has the best gig, just worry when he’s going to eat and shit, that’s it, now that’s the life !!! ;)
It has Levi's button on the seat? That jeep is a time capsule of it's era. It is a nice start to a fun project. Looking forward to watching you build. It!
Thanks, we’ll be documenting things along the journey! Read somewhere they went to “denim” option somewhere around 1979 vs. the earlier Levi’s option. Still had the denim print seats, dash and top, but lost the Levi’s name(?). But, I need to do some more digging on the validity of that. Thanks also for watching!
Well, it doesn't look too bad. I can see lots of pssibilities !!
We are going to give it a go and see what happens! Steering column rebuild, get it running (hopefully), then take it from there. Thanks for watching!
That is a Levi Edition Renegade...dash, seats, seat buttons
That would be an added bit of awesome if it is! I wonder if the VIN or other tag somewhere could provide any clues? I haven’t researched this yet.
@@NedHills VIN wont tell you much of anything
@@NedHills Offered from 1975 to 1986, the Levi's Jeep package was not a special edition, it was an option. It was one of the most popular interior and top options Jeep had ever offered. Aside from simulated stitching in Levi fashion on the seats, there was jean-style padding on the dash, and a jean material-type top. The Levi's package was available in blue or tan, and was optional on all CJ Jeeps
@@NedHills It was dealer installed
Yeah, the VIN back then didn’t share much beyond vehicle type and basic driveline. Thanks for the info on the option package!
Here's a sad thing about these axles, if the hubs come off that easy they may not be good and may be split or out of round in the center, or maybe since the nut wasn't tight there's a small chance they are alright. But if the bearing race on the axle shaft comes off so easy like on the first side the housing is worn, what I've done is I dimple the housing so it grabs the race better but only after I've calibrated the end play on the shafts. Good luck on your project!
Good point, the race definitely is loose in the axle. Probably due to the lack of proper torque on the axle nut…
@@NedHills well sometimes people sand out the housing so "it comes out easy" when they don't have the right puller hopefully it's not too much and putting some dimples fixes it, I did have one where it was so bad I had to fill with welding and regrind it
That’s a good point also. I’ll have to take a closer look at this when I get back on this one. Thank you!
Looking forward to the 1979 Jeep revival. Hopefully parts will be easier to find for this Jeep.
It’s a complete vehicle, so at least we have that going for us to build off of!
I would take the motor completely apart.
1500 will buy you a new frame that one’s been bitched up and bastardized the right way to fix that would be to cut off the front rails back to the tube and weld on new ones
Agreed on the front rails!
I agree with your man, Eric chords comment. Dana is one of the very few that marks those caps at the factory.
Thanks, I’ve found the same info/guidance in a couple other videos since as well. Thanks for watching!
I can see that you are making good progress on the axles. You're doin good !!! Keep goin !!!
Chipping away at it! Thanks Gary!
Today I learned
Nice! Thanks for watching!
My 47 Cj 2 was a nightmare. The taperd axle held on to the brake drum till the drum shatterd.
I fairly certain I was just plain lucky mine came apart as easy as it did. After having completed the task, I strongly recommend a proper puller versus the way I did! Thank you for watching!
That beat up filter is crazy! The hell was someone doing? Lol
It’s a crazy world out there!! Thanks for watching!
Ha.... should have read the comments prior to commenten’
I bet some Jackwagon drilled all those holes for a speaker to go behind there.
Brother, I can’t wait to come visit Ned Hills.
Beautiful country up here! Would love to see you come on by!!
Great job, Ned. Very cool!
Appreciate it and thanks for watching!
Just found your channel today. I like it! Your bearing caps are on the correct side of the differential, both are upside down though. The orientation of the number on the cap needs to match the orientation of the number on the housing. If you rebuild the differential do not put them back on in the current orientation. Also, examine your hubs closely. They are likely split at the keyway groove. I had purchased a hub puller to work on the rear end of my M38A1 and both hubs came off easily like yours, Both hubs were split. The last person that worked on it obviously did not know what they were doing. I am eager to see what you end up doing with your Willys.
That’s great info, thank you! We’re inching along, slow and steady!
Get it dipped !
I’m not sure I wanna spend that kinda $$$! Although if I was building a full on restoration, that would for sure be an option.
Why would you consider doing a hub job without a puller
I suppose I enjoy the frustration of not having the right tool! Should have one, which is a very valid point. Thanks for watching!
I might consider adding WD40 to your arsenal. You can spray and soak the inside of the diff to get the water and rust loose and then hose it out. I think between the loose axle and probably your vents, the water just ran in. I’ve never seen those drums come off so easy on the rear. Clean your bearings and races. They might be better than you think. Lots of of PB & WD in your future. In addition to metalshaper, G503 and Walcks have some good videos. They all seem to go by a few details that will make you almost scratch your head(don’t do it-gear oil on your head smells funny). Watching all you can is time well spent. Good luck.
I definitely got lucky on the hubs. And to another commenter’s point, I really need to get a puller. Just plain luck things came apart without one!! Thanks for watching! And for the additional resources!
It could have been a whole lot worse problem than that. I was thinking maybe a stripped oil pan bolt? Something slammed that oil filter very hard! If the motor mount was broke, it would be the one on the driver's side I think. My mounts flex more than I like. I can't see anything wrong with them!
I was pretty happy with the outcome! At least the engine is still in decent shape as far as I can tell. Thanks for watching!
Nice one basic fix. Looks like she's keeper
Great find 👏
