Urban Tropical
Великобритания
Добавлен 14 сен 2020
Hello, my name is Raj, I am crazy about plants especially tropical ones, I have a semi-jungle of a garden and house is also being taken over by plants. Here will be a portfolio of my videos showcasing my journey as I attempt to create a urban tropical garden for my house and also in garden.
There was a time when I was looking for a piece of furniture in every corner of the house but now I am getting rid of furniture and filling with plants!!
I have been at this for several years trialing many things that work and that don't. I was encouraged by my family to launch RUclips channel to share my passion. I am camera shy and this gives me the opportunity to come out of my comfort zone. I will be glad if the videos can be of any help to you.
I promise that I will try to keep my videos very short and informative!
THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!

Ensete, Elephant Ears, Alocasia, Colocasia Plant Over Winter Time

Hi I tried to explain that we don't need to be too early to over winter. All of these plants can take 0 degree Celsius. if you use them as a houseplant, they might shed the leaves due to shock but it is best to cut more leaves if you bring them indoors. I am planning different options this year so I will keep you posted:) Many thanks Urban Tropical #exoticgardening #elephantears #tropicalgardening

Like to see a summer video. I live in Liverpool and we have a runner bamboo, my parents didn’t know and are still in denial it’s a runner, it has now been 8 ish years. 😂. Like to see others with red fences too Thanks
My monstera is planted is practically full sun low shade, she loves it. And I get leaves the size of my torso. I have her outside and I am trying to make her climb up my outside wall and my fence to the second level… she’s growing beautifully
Wow!! That's amazing. I lost this beauty to thrips after struggling for 6 months but propagated more. I also have some rootings outside and it has suffered -2 degree Celsius and still no damage
It's too close to the wall.
Nice Tetrapanax you have there. Greetings from germany
Thanks for your Video. Your Imperial Green is SPECTACULAR!! 😍 My Partner just brought a Baby one home for me. Very excited to watch him grow!! 🪴
Name of that variety? Are they cold hardy at all. NC here. Like the color.
I recently bought Suam ruby a couple of months ago. Multiple plants in a small pot. Unfortunately a couple of stems have rotted. How is your Siam Ruby doing now?
Is there a follow up video?
Hi! Unfortunately I didn't make one. I had a feeling if winter was little less harsh it would have sprouted again from the root
Do you have colocasia pink china? Do they also spread? Thank you and I hope you are getting better soon🙏
I am feeling better, thank you 😊. I don't have pink china. I don't hear much about other colocasia varieties spreading in cold climates, but it only happened with gaoligongensis (grows a lot of underground runners)
@ also I recently bought a philodendron sellout “hope” and clearance spider plants that I will plant in ground next year to test for hardiness. I also got a highland collected alocasia odora (native record low -6)which is in the ground now I hope it will survive winter. I wish I can share a photo here.
@fansaaga4033 I have tried philodendron original version of hope (wild one) spider plant and odora. I left them outside but they had the worst winter few years back we had. Philodendron died on stem but roots remained and I had hope but it never came to life. I did cover them with fleece only but no other protection
You’re back!🎉
Great to see you back, I was wondering how you were getting on. Great vid thanks. I also love the colocasia. My redemption and pharos haven't grown much, in fact all my colocasia are smaller this year. I think there just hasn't been enough sunshine this year and it was a late start for spring like weather. I'm thinking of bringing a select few indoors till late spring to give them an early boost. Maybe on South facing bathroom window.
Hi! Totally agree with the weather. I am going to grow them inside too (south facing) to have a head start for 2025!
I brought my small Colocasias in and under some grow lights and a bit of heat and they're growing like mad
That's great! I have given it natural lighting and new leaf on all of them.
Good to see you back
Great info. Thanks!
thank you.. i failed to catch it early on my Jade plant... but It was due for a trim... damage on the leaves was bad.. doing this now. great info
Ive got two plants in a water vase they are doing tood but just started to turn yellow..one of the leafs. Is it a water change needed, it has fresh water. Maybe the roots need to be wiped? Can you help!
Hi there, a shed is not a good option to ensure it will be alive in the spring. I live in the warmer area of the UK and my plant did not survive so this year I have taken it indoors. Do you have any good recommendations how much care it should have during the winter?
Hi I have left mine in loft where lowest temperature was 1 or 2 degrees so it survived. If you have brought in as live plant indoor, still easy to care but need a lot of light and minimal water . You can also store it in a cupboard if you have place (once I stored under stair case - soil free) and it survived fine even though indoor temperature is around 20 degree Celsius. If large plant it is easy to get it through winter if dry stored
Here I got a good amount of information that's rarely available anywhere. Thank you so much miss 💞
Would like to see an update on “ tender plants “ that you tested for hardiness 🙏
Update video please 🙏🏼 ❤
I hope you are feeling better.
I am going leave a saucer of water out and hope this improves the humidity. Calatheas are beautiful plants but they're very fussy. My Medallion, and Maranta are down to a few leaves. I do see new growth from the Maranta and Makoyana. The Makoyana leaves look terrible so I am hoping the new growth will bring healthy leaves.
I have sprayed every two weeks throughout the summer and even today 15 September as it is set for a warm week and I have seen the moths over the past week. Last year my box were so stripped of leaves I was thinking of grubbing them out. I tried this product and they are fully revived.
That is such a good news! But to mention that do repeat the treatment few times after few weeks and keep an eye. These bugs also travel from nearby gardens I got rid off mine but needed to plant something
Mine only has one runner but from watching youtube videos i don't think you need to get rid of the whole runner. If you just cut the sucker off the end when it is ready it might just disappear
Hi
How much water will it need over the winter? Thank you.
Hello! How is it now?
I'm learning too, thanks for the tips😂
I'm guessing that is BTK
Thank you so much for this video. I have just bought a T Rex and can clearly see from your experience that I am going to have to go the pot route!
Can you make castor oil from it?
It handled the -1 pretty well
The top soil I have bought is so gross. It's so wet and heavy. It seems like moist brownie mix. (Brownies are great, but the top soil isn't.)
Plants also take infra-red lights. These lights can penetrate layers of leaves and got on your plant, if you put the plant outdoor under other trees. Also opposite as what people used to believe, plants also absorb a lot of green light. So the green light bounce around between leaves since leaves are green too, so the lower plant also absorbs that. However, if you put the plant indoor, all the lights are blocked by thick walls that any lights won’t be able to penetrate. So they actually received far less lights indoor even though your eyes can’t distinguish the difference (actually most of time our eyes also can distinguish the difference. Indoor environment is much darker than outdoor shaded area).
Thanks for the helpful video. Wish you could post the before pics :) Makes it a feel good video.
have you tried leaving it out in the wimter?
I have 10m of box hedge at the front and have been waging war on the Box Moth caterpillar the last couple of years. Chemical sprays and XenTari both work to an extent, but within several days you get more caterpillars developing, even after repeated treatments. In the end I switched to manual removal and removed over 3000 caterpillars one by one, over a period of 5-7 weeks. We're between cycles at present, but I've bought some butterfly netting to try to cover the hedge in order to reduce the next round of infestation. I think it's probably a war I cannot win, but in the meantime I'll keep trying. I have the XenTari pheromone trap out to spot when the moths come back for laying...
Thank you, I might be able to save my verrucosum ❤
yes! thank you much
Thank you for your video and sorry for your loss!!
Something I’ve noticed with cannas is that they seem to fry in the full sun lately. For me, at least. I live in San Diego. They do exceptionally well here, and I’ve always seen them as a full sun, water-loving plant. Yet the ones I experimented with, and moved to less sun, seem to grow better and look less ratty and destroyed! They get partial sun still, but not all day… Also, I’m wondering if they’re sensitive to hard water or fluoride, chlorine, etc., because they are in the order Zingiberales, along with gingers, Marantaceae (prayer plants), _Strelitzia_ (bird of paradise), bananas, heliconias, turmeric, etc. all of which are notoriously sensitive to hard or tap water. So I’ve started giving my canna only distilled or reverse osmosis water…and no brown edges! 😆 🙄
I have to repot all of mine today. It’s getting far into the season now. Lol. I have 'Cleopatra', 'Tropicanna' Durban, a black one, a striped one, and some others too. Did you know the common, basal species, _Canna edulis_ (with the red flowers and green leaves), is edible? The bulbs are like potatoes, hence the name _edulis_ apparently. 😂 Maybe more so in ancient history but I have eaten them before. Same with dahlias!
We haven't heard from you in a while. I hope you are OK.
Hello Good to hear from you:) Unfortunately, I have been very unwell and had no energy for the garden, so I just stopped making videos. I might make one next weekend if I get the energy :) I hope all is going well for you and wish you good health :)
@@urbantropicaluk I enjoy your video but I'm more interested in your health and hope you get well
As of July 2024, Xen Tari is still not available in the U.S. and unfortunately the Box Moth has arrived. I’ve not seen it here in Michigan but I want to be proactive if I see it in my landscape. My local nursery is no longer warranting new boxwood sales.
Thanks for the videos. Seeing this, I'm never going to plant mine in full soil. I'll keep it in a pot, with a dish under it. Is there a danger of propagation via dropped seed in Western European climate?
I don't get to see that I'm colder country because seeds die before they could ripe. It should be highly unlikely but if seed grows, it's much easier to pull it out. I would definitely grow it and not ne worried about seeds germination. Runners are nightmare!
Thank you! Great info!
Can you spray the apple cider vinegar solution while there is aphid infestation? You mention Autumn, Winter or very very early Spring. Can I do it whenever I want?
Thank you! I’ve always wanted one of these and I finally have the room for it… but I think I’ll first find a really big pot for it.
I used thus last year and it did work. Definitely recommend it. Just need to keep a watch for the first signs.
I just bought Alocasia regal shield for a full sun area in zone 8a in US (north Carolina) . I am planning to put it in ground for a full sun spot and getting nervous if it work out
Odora should be the most hardy ones. I checked on iNaturalist and they grow in their native range up to Shanghai in the map which is zone 8/9. I would protect or store it if it other varieties
@@fansaaga4033 Found the hard way that for Alocasia regal shield variety full sun causes burning, so I moved to mostly shade of the building (not the deep shade below trees) and it still had burns. I think it may work better only indoors or in deep shade like under large tree canopy.
