We own a caravan at cherry tree holiday park,love it and great Yarmouth

I know it is a shame that people have lost their homes , this is nature. People talk mostly of the destruction, there is however another side. If you look at the beach at Great Yarmouth you can see its expansion.

Me and my family have been on holiday every year for the last 50 yrs in Newport Hemsby and we used to walk along the path that is now falling onto the beach. So sad to see it dissapear before our eyes and also devastating for the local residants that have now lost their homes to the sea.

Roman forts were not designed primarily as defences against attack. That was only a secondary purpose. That were first & foremost bases acting as springboards for attack, & as secure places from which to control & police an area. They were always located in Roman held territory, not in enemy lands. These coastal forts could not themselves protect the whole coastline, an enemy could simply land in the wide spaces between each fort. The forts stood as places where supplies & trading could safely take place, & from where naval & land patrols could go out to seek out & oppose enemy raiders. The origin of some of these forts is likely during the separatist Empire of Postumus in the 3rd century, as bases from which to oppose attack from the 'legitimate' Empire, & nothing to do with 'Saxons' at all. Only much later did the idea of a 'Saxon Shore' come about, into which this series of forts have been integrated, but which may not have been relevant at the time.
