Joe Zawinul was keyboardist for alto saxophonist Cannonball Adderley's instrumental jazz quintet in the 1960's; he wrote the song "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" for Adderley's 1966 album "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy! Live at 'The Club.'" The song was a huge hit. Then in February 1967 Johnny "Guitar" Watson and Larry Williams wrote lyrics for the song and they scored a hit on the R & B charts; 6 months later The Buckinghams recorded the song with those particular lyrics and their recording climbed all the wayto to #5 on the pop charts.
