Own a couple of cowboy hats living in Western NY and get compliments now and then. I think most folks are not confident and when someone wearing something that commands attention enters the room they give respect to the self confidence they wish they had being displayed.

When I lived on my farm in the south I grew accustomed to wearing a cowboy hat when I was working on the farm but even though I now live in a midwest I still wear my cowboy hat periodically on those hot summer days or when I'm doing law work because for me it's like a piece of equipment but anyway most people say they love the cowboy hat but last summer this lady asked me what the deal was with the cowboy hat since I'm not a cowboy I said people wear baseball caps who don't play baseball so what's the difference you have a rainbow flag on your house so you support men who aren't women wearing dresses so you think it's okay for them to be who they want to be but I can't lol I find it strange that people in wyoming of all places would give you strange looks over wearing a cowboy hat like you said they are extremely practical they help keep the rain and sign off of you and keep your head warm. The way I see it if people are staring at me weather in a good or bad way I must be doing something right smh

In Wyoming? Wow, that is weird. I'm in Southern Cal and I do get looks but lots of compliments as well. We are living in strange times and people are dressing in lots of different attire some of which we wouldn't have seen a few years ago. Wearing a Cowboy hat is nothing compared to that.

I dont wear my cowboy hat at my boys school because of potential bullying he might receive. I was at an indoor play room for kids it's big & I was the only one wearing western style clothes & two kids started throwing those plastic balls at me that kids play in when I finally spotted the kids doing it they had such hate in there eyes it shocked me. I see people do a double take some times when they look at me. I think it is to do with they think we are prejudiced to other races which is just not true but the stigma seems entrenched now. The way of the cowboy is dying sorry to say. Good luck wear what you want but have situational awareness if in the wrong croud you could be singled out.

I wear a cowboy hat out almost everyday with a full beard & leather boots , leather belt @ work or to go out plus I drive a Chevrolet Silverado here in the city in sunny South Florida area and people stare at me all the time haven't gotten any negative reactions or anything like that yet however most city folk look stunned to see a modern Cowboy / Vaquero in the city I've also gotten compliments so mostly positive feedback keep doing what your doing could be that most Americans depending on the city / state just have a negative perspective on Cowboys due to the wild west movies so they seem intimidated & think we're bad guys or something about to pull a bank heist or a shootout on horseback lol . For most of us it gives us a badass outlaw bandido look you should see the reactions I've got wearing my Mexican Charro Mariachi Bandido Hat 😅 . Cowboy hats make people uncomfortable for several reasons, all directly related to what the hat represents. A cowboy is part of an exclusive group of Americans that are pure Alpha male. They symbolize bravery, self-reliance and rugged individualism. The current leftist society does not like this. At all. Because you are not dependent on the state. Men do not like you wearing them because you are now a threat. You threaten their worldview and their percieved relatioship with women. They know, at least subconciously, that women gravitate to the alpha male and away from them with their leftist views. Women also percieve you as a threat, again to their worldview. Leftist women want their men passive and submissive so as to maintain control. A cowboy, a man who is anything but passive, is a major threat to them because they know that they cannot control this type of man. It is a threat to what they teach their children, i.e. girls should be dominate and boys submissive, so as to avoid "toxic masculinity". Also, they are, subconciously at least, sexually drawn Alpha males. It is in their nature, which they go to great lengths to deny.
