Another person who drank the Kool-Aid about Vietnam. Just remember, the hippies and the college student crying about serving in Vietnam and other like-minded people were the ones that hastened the end of the BS war you just described. As an American, I don't die "following orders". You can do that in communistic, totalitarian countries as well. The US Government was incredibly dysfunctional and erroneous in its foreign policy. 1971, I was 21 and in college with a deferment from being drafted. Then came that summer and they took my deferment away and announced that we were all to be given a number on TV by the Sec. of Defense who would draw out a number out of a barrel filled with ping pong balls with numbers on them. I was vehemently against the war. I was dead set against the war. You could tell by watching the news and reading the reports that this was a civil war, that the South Vietnamese government was corrupt and the fear of communism was unwarranted. Then the Pentagon Papers came out and the cat was out of the bag. US involvement in VietNam was fruitless and they knew it. I decided I was not going to let the US Government make a war criminal out of me. I was not going to let my future be decided by some idiot pulling ping-pong balls out of a basket. I decided that if I got a low number I would not serve. I would go to Canada or something but I would not kill for the US Government. As luck would have it I got a high number and I was never called to serve. But this whole mess still bothers me today. I've been to the wall in DC, and I watch the veterans wear their stupid Viet Vet baseball caps. The real people that should be honored are the 100,000 who marched on DC in 1970 and slept on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial to protest the war. The real people that should be honored are the soldiers who resisted the war and had to serve time in jail. The real people that should be honored are people like Howard Zinn and others who spoke out publicly against the war. They helped stop that war and they saved the lives of countless Vietnamese and US soldiers. I visited Cambodia in 2009. I visited the killing fields of the Khmer Rouge and I know the story of how 2 million were killed at their hands; an atrocity on top of the war that many say never would have happened without the US involvement and pullout. I've seen the war-wounded amputees in Phnom Penh. There was no glory in that war, there were no heroes in that war, and those that went and fought deserve no more remembrance than those that stayed home and resisted. That's the truth. Also, You and all the other Vietnam veterans were either too ignorant or cowardly...or both...to stand up to your Government when it was wrong. Your time in Vietnam did nothing for American safety, security and freedom. It wasn't your fight. And you talk about defending America and your family. Defending America and your family from what exactly? I was around then... the "complications" should not cover-up the simplicity of the matter. North South Vietnam was NO threat to American security and interests...Communist or non-Communist. The US had armed forces all over the Pacific. The only real casualty was Thailand going neutral and the US closing a base there. 60000 Americans dead, $1 Trillion spent (today's money) and a huge demoralization of the US for years. Those were the costs of the " There was NO "Pearl Harbor". It was an Asian civil war for independence. You know Ho Chi Min asked the US for help securing their independence from France right? We refused. So instead of looking at the American Revolution as a model, he looked into the writings of Marx and the Bolshevik revolution. Maybe if we just helped them overthrow their oppressors they would have been our friends? I mean come on, could France really have refused if we demanded they give up Vietnam? We were too important an ally and we could have thrown our diplomatic weight around to help the Vietnamese but we didn't. All to start a war that we lost which resulted in over a million dead vietnamese, most of them civilians. So know you and all your fellow Vietnam veterans were the real cowards not those who joined the navy in order to avoid the frontlines or didn't go to Vietnam at all were right all along. All you 2.7 million Vietnam veterans were chumps and pawns of your Government and the military/industrial complex. Your country didn't have the guts or integrity to declare war that it sent you to. Vietnam did nothing to Americans or the US. The war was essentially an Asian civil war for independence from decades of colonialism. YOU didn't belong there. It wasn't your fight. You were an invader and aggressor in someone else's country. It was clowns like yourselves that kept an American disaster going for 10 years...yet you blame the politicians and unsupportive American public for everything. And you claim that those who avoided the frontlines in Vietnam had no respect for America and their families when you clowns prolonged an American disaster that wasted so many lives and money in America and divided the public. The 2.7 million veterans such as yourself from that war did nothing to keep the US out of other "Vietnams" like Somalia, Lebanon, Iraq and Afghanistan. In fact, the Vietnam generation was in power during the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Too bad all of you didn't have the brains and the courage to be real patriots and stand up to your Government when it was wrong. That's called real patriotism. It was people like myself that helped to hasten the end of that disaster and ultimately save American lives. Your time in Vietnam did absolutely nothing for the safety, security and freedom of Americans. If you believe that you did...you probably believe in the Tooth Fairy as well.
