SRV used super thick strings . Billy Gibbons uses 7 gauge strings . What guitar string gauge should you use on your guitar.

I basically learned how to play on 11s. When I got my first guitar which probably had 9s the tension felt floppy even though I couldn't really play much yet...intuitively it felt off. So I naively asked a clerk in the music store if there was such a thing as thicker strings. He suggested a set of 11s and after putting them on it felt right. The string tension felt more solid yet still easy to manipulate. Now over 30 years later I've pretty much always used 11s tuned to standard 440. In the early years it felt really awkward playing a guitar with 9s in a shop but now after several decades I'm not as fussy. But all my guitars are set up with 11s with low action...that is a must for me to be at my most comfortable. There are no right or wrongs regarding string gauge...use whatever enhances your style and sound best. I play Blues and old school Rock n Roll so my thing is more about string bends rather than fast legato runs played very delicately which works best with light strings...I like to hold the notes a bit harder and sustain them with bends and mircobends so 11s really support that approach for me best.

  • @montyellingsworth4982

I started with 9's then went to tens then to 11's for a start and then.. I ruined my frets. These days I am mostly using tens again. It does depend on the guitar scale length and the playing style and how you are tuned. In my experience tens on a double humbucker guitar is nice I have an SG now and its pretty good. I also found out my start sounds a lot better with these TV Jones pickups.. not single coils. Yeah I used 11's for long enough. Just do whatever works for you.

10's are better than 9's and I believe are far better than 11's. As far as making them last goes, you could buy the stainless steel strings from Dean Markley. They won't rust and you can even clean them with glass spray if you lay a wash cloth over you fret board to protect it. 11's could cause your fingers to much tension over time. Especially being older. 10's are just thick enough to play slide guitar, and thin enough to make easy bends. However, I'd be changing my strings once a month as a practicing guitarist. I'd be changing them weekly as a working musician. I prefer the tone of nickel strings. But the Stainless strings are brighter.

Last a long time. sound brighter than the nickel strings. 10's are just thick enough to work while playing slide, guitar and thin enough to bend easily, when soloing.
