The Needles Forgotten & Abandoned Sea Level Battery Isle of Wight
A battery was proposed for this site in 1855, to mount six 68prs to cover Alum Bay to the north. The Needles battery, later referred to as Old Needles Battery to distinguish it from the new battery built nearby, was constructed as part of the Royal Commission defences of the Needles Passage. It is a barbette battery built on the projecting point of the chalk ridge above the Needles Rocks, at an elevation of 254 feet above sea level. It commanded the narrow channel between the Needles Rocks and the Shingles, the edge of that shoal being a little more than 2,000 yards distant so that passing ships would be subjected to plunging fire upon their decks. The height of the battery protected it f...

Needles Walk From Alum Bay Past The Sea Level Battery

A video of a walk from Alum Bay to The Needles, on a very low tide, during the summer of 2017. The friends I went with, stopped to visit the sea level battery, under The Old Needles Battery, but I carried on, on my own to The Needles. Please do not attempt this walk if you are not tide aware, you can easily get cut off by the tide, as people have in the past.

That rounding of the point, looking up at the chalk pinnacle with the wind blasting through was incredible. This video hit me on so many levels: the timing, low spring tide, the calm weather, the chaotic boulders, and looking up, the chalk cliffs towering. Then, the linear ribs of sandstone, much older, projecting vertically at the shoreline. The effect looks almost man- made. These ridges were once horizontal layers of aeons of sediment. What forces of the earth's crust contorted them to lie as they do?.. and on top of that, the chalk. Thank you for this, and well done. The music is sublime, I was whistling harmonies and drumming along on the kitchen sink. The Isle of Wight is a magical island for sure, and very surprising. Nick

I amazed how good everything is, paints not flakey on walls, most of the light fittings are there and most of the doors, normally first thing that comes off. Love the wooden crates. What did it say on them? Even rubber round the doors. Still equipment there too. Damn that place needs saving. Must have been a faily large site? I allways think of the people who built these places , civies I guess who contributed so much.

Richard Trenoweth Grenfell was my 2nd cousin 3x removed. I only found out about him whilst recently researching my family tree. Co-incidentally, my Dad was also a lighthouse keeper back in the late 60's early 70's and served on most of the same lights as Richard. My Dad had no idea about his relative until I told him last year (2020).

Very sad to see this, however these buses can take time and a great deal of money. I worked on RMLs in 1973 as a newly made up bus mechanic at Bow garage. We were fortunate that we had the pit facilities, skilled staff and all the spare parts required to keep these running to PSV standard. I will say though that ive seen a number of restored buses in my time, and i'm sure that many of my old colleagues would be astounded at the level of workmanship that has been achieved. Good luck to you one and all.

I remember them at Fairfield Road, before withdrawal, used them a lot on the 8’s, Stagecoach RML’s, these days they are boxes on wheels with no styling, even the new Routemasters are failure, bodywork in a bad way, it was nice to ride them in that condition on the 36’s around Paddington Sussex Gardens, by then, they were in a hell of a state, as the operator knew of their withdrawal.

@@jacksugden8190 Hi Jack, I worked for ' Stagecoach' from 1994, till my resignation in 2004. I was extremely glad to leave, but sorry too. As for the buses, the times were changing, and buses Like our old Routemaster didn't really fit the bill. I do agree that modern vehicles, were not a patch on the old types we knew. The modern types, were certainly here to stay, but unfortunately for us engineers they were not 'mechanic friendly' in anyway. Perhaps we had the good times, when we think back to it. I don't know what many of my old trolleybus workmates would think these days. Many of those blokes are long gone, now and so has all their old knowledge and experience. Shame when I think back. Kind regards.

I love the Routemaster. The standard 27' is my favourite. This is sad to know it's heyday has long since passed and now rotting to pieces. Could be ripe for preservation back to it's original LT livery. This one heavily refurbished in the latter part of it's life. RML 2685 new in Aug. '67 at Hanwell garage. Re-engined with Cummins in 1990. Final service 2005.

Just an old bus to me, the love and romance was long gone, loved them in 1962 on the Green Line service at Brentwood, and in 1967 on the Country Area 339’s, read that the 15 Heritage Route was to loose the class, a sign of the times in the modern age.

That is definitely not a recording of St Catherine’s which had a double note Supertyphon type foghorn like the one that used to sound at Lundy South prior to the 800 emitter beside it. This sounds more like Lizard or Nash Point. St Catherine’s point sounded 1 blast every 45 seconds not Morse code N. Good photo, wrong horn.
