So can you not pluck the BOWED psaltery? I click on the video to find out.

  • @sagegardener

The title implies you'll demonstrate plucking the bowed psaltery. I saw you pluck the regular psaltery and bow the bowed psaltery. Please fix your title so as not to mislead people.

I used little post it stickers and slid them under the strings so that they line up from my point of view while sitting. Make sure that you check how it lines up from whatever your point of view is when playing. If you just stick them right under the strings, the notes near the top will be off from your playing point of view. I used tiny post-it rectangles with rounded edges about 1"x½". They don't damage the surface when you remove them either so that's a good way to mark the notes.

Pity there's nothing about plucking the Bowed Psaltery as per the title.

    • @-jank-willson
      @-jank-willson Год назад

you are supposed to bow it, not pluck it. If you pluck it, it will sound very similar to a lap harp, but it will be more difficult to do so due to the shape. Might as well get a regular lap harp/plucked psaltery if you want to pluck an instrument...

Troy...you are a Godsend!! I have a 15/16 Hudson that was gifted to me in 2009 by an old musician friend of mine who was dying of pancreatic cancer; This instrument has been sitting in my upstairs closet all this time...I've only had it out a couple of times. I was so intimidated by it that I didn't know where to start. I have a granddaughter who "says" she wants to learn to play every instrument. She asked for a grand piano for Christmas!! LOL The family would have had to build on a new wing just for the piano in order to fit it in the house!! So I decided to pull the Hammered Dulcimer out of the closet hoping to get her acquainted with a quieter, smaller, more interesting instrument. She seems to be equally intimidated but your videos are encouraging. I'm ready to go over and sit with her and use your videos to help us learn how to play it. What I want to know is where you get the key guides for the instrument. That seems like one of the most helpful tools available to really learn how to play!!! You can email me at jeanneleachman@gmail.com if you help me out. I'd love to purchase them from you if you can make them available!!! Thank you!!

May I ask if the psaltery predates the harp or vice versa? I study biblical instruments and would love to know. Thank you.

    • @-jank-willson
      @-jank-willson Год назад

The Biblical psaltery would have been a bit different, of course. They would have used gut strings in ancient times, and the body design and method of playing it could have been completely different as the concepts of music theory, chords, frets, scales, keys, etc. had not been invented yet at that time...

It seems odd that this basic introduction video has no information regarding tuning the chord stick. Nowhere in the video does it described what to which notes each string should be initially tuned on any of the 3 instruments demonstrated. (3 string, 4 string or Hobro ) It would certainly be helpful if someone would add that information.

The title of this video is misleading. At no point does he ever pluck the bowed psaltery. I realize that's an unusual technique, but it can be done, and even combined with bowing simultaneously.

So I just bought one of your amazing chord sticks and I was curious about alternative things. I realize that would take away the ability to play chords with one finger which is an incredibly useful thing to have. But I play slot of Irish folk for ren. Fairs and medevial events... the tuning I'm most curious about is GDAD what are your thoughts?

The guys there were very professional and patient and not pushy at all. I don’t regret this dulcimer one bit. The entire store was amazing. I could have easily stayed in there for hours checking out stuff that most music stores don’t offer. Thanks guys from Cedar Creek Dulcimer 2 thumbs up.
