Gripen can't do the anti-ship attack (which is the main function required by the Phillipines) very well. Tejas can do everything the Gripen can do in terms of air combat, land attack, anti-radiation/EW role plus its Radar Cross Section is about one third that of the Gripen, and has demonstrated network missile firing where one Tejas sneaks in low and stealthily using its low RCS to avoid detection to launch a missile at close range to hit a target detected and assigned by another Tejas which is hanging back out of missile range. This low RCS which is due to Tejas being designed from the onset using a Radar Absorbent Composite structure which makes up 95% of the aircraft's surface, and its state of the art Uttam radar which is comparable to the best AESA radars currently available, gives the Tejas an advantage in Beyond Visual Range combat over older aircraft like the Gripen, F16, Rafale, and Typhoon (which were designed with no consideration for low Radar Cross Section). In close visual range combat, the Tejas is very manoeuvrable, but has the advantage over the others in that it is very small and therefore difficult to acquire visually and in a close combat dogfight, it means the Tejas pilot can usually acquire its opponent visually and manoeuvre into a kill position before it is seen by its opponent, making it a very good aircraft in close combat as well. This concept was proven in the Indo-Pak 1965 war where the Pakistani F86 Sabres - then considered the best WVR dog fighters in the world - were outclassed and shot down in close WVR combat by India's diminutive Folland Gnat/Ajeet fighters, and it is the reason why the Indian Air Force specified Tejas to be so small and compact. The pilots flying the most advanced western aircraft - the Rafale, the Typhoon, of the German, Spanish, and French were surprised when Tejas Mk1 aircraft intercepted them out of nowhere and locked radars onto them in the Tarang Shakti war games exercise in India recently - effectively they would have been shot down in a war. The Spanish Air Chief described Tejas as "Top of the Line". The small size of the Tejas of course has some limitations in terms of payload and range, but its 550km combat radius with fuel, anti-ship/anti-aircraft weapons and ground attack armament is perfect for Philippines to protect its 200 mile Exclusive Economic Zone, and it has air to air refuelling capability to extend this range. Tejas Mk2 with a higher payload will be available in 2029 onwards. Basically Tejas Mk1A is Gripen C/D ++, and Tejas Mk2 is Gripen E/F ++. Tejas Mk1A and Tejas Mk2 will have a lot of commonality including the greatest range of weapons capability of any of its competitors due to them being integrated with all the missile systems the IAF operates. It can carry all Indian, Western European, Russian, and US weapons using a launcher adapter, and can carry Brahmos NG anti-ship missile, Python, Mica, MBDA Meteor, Astra 1, 2, 3 air to air missiles, Rudram 1, 2, and 3 anti-radiation/bunker buster missiles, and a whole load of glide bombs, cruise missiles like Storm Shadow etc. These are the weapons that are already used in the IAF. More will be added - the concept being that the Uttam GaN radar and avionics will be fitted on all Indian aircraft (Tejas Mk1A, Mk2, AMCA, Super Sukhoi upgrade, and Mig 29 upgrade) and all missiles that can be integrated will be integrated with all these aircraft. India wanted to replace the Thales radar that comes standard with Rafales with Uttam, but decided it was not cost effective to do that for such a small number of aircraft, so the Rafales will have only the Western missiles used by the IAF and France, and all the Indian missiles integrated. The Tejas is exactly what the Philippines needs for its air defence and naval/land strike roles, and it is about half the price of its contenders.

@@pisquared1827Gripen can carry air-to-air missiles such as AIM-9 Sidewinder, air-to-ground missiles such as the AGM-65 Maverick, and anti-ship missiles such as the RBS-15, just tell them what you want it to carry and country of origin. If Tejas strikes fear in enemy pilots, go for it. If not, Gripen will.

@@user-uc9qt1mc5i The Brahmos NG (now renamed Brahmos MA) should be at flight testing stage between 2025 and summer of 2026 according to the best information available, and should be delivered in large scale production about two to three years later. The integration with Tejas Mk1A, will be in the same timeline. The Tejas Mk1A and Su30 MKI, will be integrated first, Rafale later. Brazil has asked for Brahmos NG and Astra integration with their Gripen E/Fs, but that will come later. The Astra 1 (110 km range), 2 (160 km range dual pulse) and 3 (350km range SFDR) are also important, and also top priority for the IAF. Astra 1 has been tested and integrated into Tejas Mk1A and is being delivered. Astra Mk2 will complete user trials in 2025 and will be delivered and inducted in 2026 with large scale deliveries in 2027. Astra Mk3 has been successfully flight tested in 2023, and will probably have the same delivery timeline as the Brahmos NG.
