If you've never unsuccessfully tried to call a Moroccan hotel at two in the morning can you even call yourself a filmmaker? Been there, buddy.

I've noticed scratch-offs and McDonald's have a prominent role in this film. Mark's description of paradise is lying on a beach in Cancun sipping a large McDonald's fountain soda.

You know a movie is incredible when the deleted scenes are masterpieces in themselves.

Lived in Wisconsin for 15 years. Can confirm this is how most dudes from Wisconsin are. Also weird trivia I saw Mark Borchardt get randomly interviewed on the news once.

Perhaps the best example of cinema verite ever made this this country. No narration, little on-screen text. A little story within a large story. It's a masterpiece.

My favourite Rory song. A beautiful introduction leads into a wonderfully sad, lost love, song. Rory was a marvellous performer on stage. He always gave everything for the fans. Saw Gerry in London earlier this year and his band perform Rory’s songs with respect, grace and dignity. I want this song played at my funeral. Hopefully a few years yet as I would like to listen to Rory many more times.

American Documentary? Clearly you don’t own the DVD or blu-ray otherwise you would’ve found it in the deleted scenes section. Only posers don’t know the correct title of the film and don’t own a physical copy.

Uncle Bill makes me so depressed. He comes across as such a broken soul. No dreams, no aspirations, no goals. He had more money than he knew what to do with. I think that's why he didn't want to share it. Letting the money go would be him admitting to himself that all that he had worked and saved for was meaningless. There wasn't the one big life fulfilling purchase to make at the end of the road that would have made it all worthwhile. At some point in his life Bill had a plan and a purpose for that pile of cash. At the end of this life he had neither, he just had the pile of paper. The purpose was gone, and he couldn't buy it back with money. I would love to know Bill's life story so I could have some closure here. I need to know how this happened to Bill because I'm terrified of it happening to me.

Bill was just old. He didn't want to become a movie producer or aspire to become anything or fulfill any dreams in his old age ... He just wanted peace and quiet like 99% of all elderly people. I think what made him so despondent was the death of his wife. From what I can remember watching this movie decades ago, that's what really broke him.
