The reason Mellencamp initially omitted his surname when he first began recording in 1976 was because his first manager Tony DeFries hated it with the thought it sounded too German; he wanted him to have a more American-sounding moniker, hence "John Cougar" was born. That would change soon after the success of American Fool in 1982. Beginning with his 1983 album Uh-Huh, he finally used his actual surname, initially placing it after "Cougar," becoming "John Cougar Mellencamp," which would last through his 1989 album Big Daddy.

If John sang this live on solid gold then I can also sell u real estate in florida. This was lip synched totally and the band wasn’t even playing except to a backing track. Not one bit of this as most bands on solid gold never performed live. It’s quite obvious. Where is the organist/keyboard player by the way? Playing in the audience? Lol. This was a great tune. Thank God for MTV in the 80s. They played the best stuff back then.
