Building Connections: Research Progress in Vision-Restoring Therapy for Glaucoma
Просмотров 73514 дней назад
The Johnson Laboratory at the Johns Hopkins Wilmer Eye Institute has spent the past 5 years working to develop stem cell therapies capable of regenerating the optic nerve and restoring vision for patients suffering from glaucoma. This is a challenging goal since it requires the replacement of lost nerve cells in the eye and the building of new connections between these stem cell-derived neurons...

These comments are all so hopeful and positive. But keep in mind that pure science and research generally progress very slowly and incrementally. We drive cars and know little of how they work, fly in airplanes...ditto, use smart phones...ditto. The eye and it's complexity...well now. Sure, a researcher with a soothing and optimistic sounding voice allows us to be positive. How many years now raising funds for cancer, MS, ALS, Alzheimer's, etc... Understand that scientific researchers often must "publish or perish". Look at today's medical science and you'll see medications and surgical techniques being used that were developed decades ago. Sure, some refinements have occurred and that's good. But in regard to the information in this video, you can find that this strain of research has been going on for some time and you can bet there are maybe only a few dozen scientists involved in regenerative work in any really meaningful way. What I'm trying to say is...don't get your hopes up. As a side note...even the research that was used to justify the annual sales of tens of millions of dollars of "glaucoma drops" is quite...lean.

I suffer from juvenile glaucoma, I'm 38 years old too young for this disease, having it after the age of 60 or 70 is an immense luxury ! A hospital offered me SLT which I did in only 1 eye luckily ! I lost all central vision towards the nose in that eye immediately after ! SLT is not always the solution !!! it can make your intraocular pressure rise and spike and cause you to lose further sight !

Quack, quack. Insert imaginary flatulence sound byte here. Anything for a click. Sexy big lipped woman commentator though. Whoopee! Click, click, click. Unbelievable conclusions...literally.

Was diagnosed with glaucoma in September 2023,my vision was not bad, I started eye drops immediately, but my vision is gone bad, just a few months along the line, the thing is in Africa SLT is actually not talked about by doctors they just depend on eye drops for petients and it pains because there really no other option, Drops are not really realiable

is the cure already??? They just talk and talk. This information has already been known for 10 years. NOTHING NEW. But the drops and laser do come out all the time and are of no use because the disease progresses the same. WE WANT THE CURE, the rest is useless

  • @alle492

is the cure already? All they do is talk and talk. They talk about studies that were discovered 10 years ago, they talk about trials that are never successful, they talk about trials that never go beyond the phase (Jeff Goldberg is a sinister character in this case), they talk about drops, lasers and surgeries that maintain the disease but they generate multiple profits for the laboratories. TALK ABOUT THE CURE FOR GLAUCOMA!!!

This was a very good presentation, however they've been peddling hope for the last 30 years. I don't want to hear about what's on the horizon anymore. I'm losing my vision. With the millions of dollars that have been invested in research, we are at the point where this field needs to start putting out some results full stop, and not just hopium.

I was diagnosed in 2017 with open angle glaucoma and subsequently have seen 4 different ophthalmologists. I was having a tough time with compliance due to the side effects. I am a nurse practitioner and I decided to do my own research on Pub Med. I discovered article after article on the toxicity of BAK describing in detail how this preservative destroys the trabecular meshwork and causes ocular surface disease and inflammation. I was mortified to discover that this preservative was so toxic . Not one doctor discussed this with me nor offered me a preservative free drop which are available! You say there is no preservative free prostaglandin eye drops in the US. TAFLUPROST 0.0015% IS PRESERVATIVE FREE AND IN THE US. There is also a preservative free beta blocker. I am the one who did my home work and asked my doctor to order them..CVS My Doctor was unaware . The science is clear that this should be the first line of treatment and apart of informed consent and it is a travesty that this is not . We all know that of money and politics play a big role but It's still the patients right to decide what they want to put in their body after full informed consent from their doctor. It's the doctors job to teach and inform cost and all ! We all know that medicine is big business and is captured by the pharmaceutical companies which explains the lack of regulation. Patients are suffering because of this. This has to change. We all need to fight to get the freedom back to the doctors so they can practice good medicine and not be pushed around by the insurance companies and big business.
