I ran the Hoga know as the City of Oakland. Station 2 used to go out on the vessel weekly to exercise her. I was a new kid in the fire department but had experience in the US Navy running different dive boats as a US Navy Diver. One day as a ride along new kid, the operator asked if I wanted to try and dock her. I immediately said yes. Then he said, I was not talking to you!. He was actually asking a veteran Fireman. The older fireman said no thanks. It was 99 feet long 368 gross tons and 20 feet wide with a approximate 13 foot draft single screw. Intimidating to be sure. After the fireman said no to the operator, I again said I'll dock her, and he reluctantly said ok. I was used to operating single screw vessels as well as twin screw. I took the controls and slid her right into the slip just as pretty as you please. Everyone was amazed. Form the Fire Boat Officer to the Fireboat Operator to my fellow new kids on board. None of them could believe I could moor the vessel so easily. From that moment on I realized that being a fireboat operator was my destiny. I had less than a year in the fire dept and was on probation, but almost every day the Hoga went out I was on it. Quickly the older operators just let me run the tug from start to finish. I trained on the Yoga for several years and was training for a fire boat operator exam that had not been announced with no exam in sight. I eventually got my chance after several years when they announced an exam to hire another operator. Needless to say I ranked #1 on the exam due to the fact I had been running the vessel so much for years. I took my operation exam on the Hoga but by the time I became a Fire Boat Operator in the Oakland Fire Department the HOGA had been given back to the US Navy and wthe Fire Chief sourced a new vessel named the Fireboat Seawolf . So I was a new fire boat operator without a vessel for a short time. I spent 19 years operating as a fire boat operator and 4 plus years unofficially operating the Hoga. I was honored to operate the Hoga for several years before they gave her back to the Navy. I have many interesting stories about my time on the HOGA. As a side note, the USS Potomac was moored next to the Fireboat and some of the fire crew at station 2 assisted them in docking because of the difficult dock they had to moor in. So we would act as line handlers from shore when the came in. As a fireboat operator and only working every 3rd day I started as a deck hand on my days off from the fire dept. From there I took my 500 gross ton inland masters exam, and passed. Similarly, on the Potomac I as a deck hand was allowed to operate and dock the Potomac under the guidance of mostly SF Bar pilots. One day while showing up as a senior deckhand, I was getting the vessel ready to get underway. Polishing brass and the like. Suddenly the Potomac Administrator came onto the ship and asked me if I was ready to operate the ship because the Captain who was suppose to be there was not there and they could not get a hold of him by phone. I quickly said heck yeah! That was my first day as a new captain of the USS Potomac. I eventually was appointed Training Captain and trained all the crew members in abandon ship, fire and man overboard procedures as well as first aid etc... I also trained other deck hands to operated the ship. Cheers
