Richard Serra Drawings - an online discussion
Просмотров 2,7 тыс.2 года назад
Richard Serra has long been acclaimed for his large-scale, site-specific sculptures. But throughout his career, the foundation for the artist’s work has lain in the direct and intimate practice of drawing: ‘I like to draw,’ Serra has said, ‘It is an activity I rely on, a dependency of sorts.’ To coincide with ‘Richard Serra Drawings’ 16 Sepember - 17 December at Ordovas in London, Apollo and Or...
Wild Life: Francis Bacon and Peter Beard - an online discussion
Просмотров 3,5 тыс.3 года назад
Though it was one of the most significant creative friendships of the post-war period, the relationship between Francis Bacon and his friend and muse, the artist Peter Beard, has been little explored to date - and nor do we have a nuanced picture of how it informed their art. To coincide with ‘Wild Life: Francis Bacon and Peter Beard’ (until 16 July) at Ordovas in London, Apollo and Ordovas are...

I found Peter Beards body April 11 2000. I also just finished the Book WILD by Graham Boynton its a book about Peter Beards life. The book and stories like the above video put this most talented man's life into perspective. The book was amazing and I understand now how maybe Peters's last walk in the bush happened. Read the book . I found it Pretty Incredible. I finished the book in a tree stand where I know Peter walked his last walk in the bushy March 2000. I'm a bow hunter and i hunt the property across the street from Peters's property. RIP Peter

I know the area well having helped Lou & Jennette Kayel from 1969-1972 take care of their 5+ acres and having lived there for 2 summers before Peter bought the place. In 1973 I took a year off from college to work with Peter, moving the windmill (which I filmed) and other projects. We kept in touch throughout the years. I miss him very much. I hope to meet you someday and share our experiences with PB. We have mutual friends.

I’d love to see this redone after everyone had a couple drinks, or maybe with a strong, funny moderator. It felt too careful and halting. I wish this talented, accomplished group spoke with more confidence.

Jim is right about the Kenyan context and working from loss. Kenya’s history as a (previous) settler colony with art traditions that were policed, banned, made taboo and “polished” during colonialism and anti-history postcolonial government means there isn’t much to look back at and draw from. We all have to reimagine or reinvent from spaces of unbelonging and loss.
