- Ton Ton Ball Longplay (Super Cassette Vision Game) - Difficulty: Expert -
Ton Ton Ball is an action game with action elements, developed and published by Epoch Co., Ltd. for the Super Cassette Vision console, released exclusively in Japan in 1985. The game blends mechanics from pinball and billiards, tasking players with guiding a character named Tonton through various levels.
The objective is to clear each stage by having Tonton push a variable number of balls into designated boxes. Strangely, the balls are designed to look like pig heads-a rather odd and somewhat off-putting choice, if you ask me. Players must navigate obstacles, use strategic angles, and carefully time their actions to...

      Not a lot of fun, honestly. It’s extremely easy and doesn’t feel like a real baseball game since all you can do is pitch, bat, and move your receivers-baseball is so much more than that. There were other games released around the same time that were far more complete. That said, I think it’s always worthwhile to revisit old titles and ensure they aren’t forgotten, especially if they helped pave the way for what came later.

    I had the Atari 2600 as a kid. Got it a few years after the 5200 released. I didn't know anything about the 5200 and I didn't care. Anyway, I played Burgertime arcade anytime I could find it, which for some reason wasn't that often. I live in New York City and the arcades didn't have have it. Most of the time I'd find it outside of a store. Anyway, I wanted Burger time for the 2600 so bad, but my mom could never find it. I got a ton of games one year and BT wasn't among them. By that time, I couldn't find the arcade machine anywhere. The first time I was able to play the game at home must have been 1998? A compilation for the original PlayStation. I said all that to say, this version looks like a lot of fun, and very close in terms of sound, to the arcade. Good times. Simpler times. Have you played super Burgertime? Didn't know that was a thing until recently!

    • @RetroGamingLoft
      @RetroGamingLoft 6 часов назад

      Thanks for sharing your story-it’s amazing how nostalgic games like Burgertime can bring back such vivid memories! I can totally relate to those moments of wanting a specific game so badly and the joy of finally getting to play it years later. It’s interesting that you couldn’t find the arcade version often in New York City; you’d think a place like that would have everything! As for Super Burgertime, yes, I’ve played it! While it’s fun in its own way and adds some new mechanics, I personally don’t find it as entertaining as the original. There’s just something about the simplicity and charm of the first Burgertime that makes it special.

    A game of chance? : ) It is true that strategy games allow to "be satisfied" with alpha-numeric displays... still need to be able or know how to program them;)

    • @RetroGamingLoft
      @RetroGamingLoft 6 часов назад

      Correct, even if it’s pretty basic by today’s standards, I think there’s a layer of strategy in deciding where to search for treasures. Programming even something as simple as alpha-numeric displays back then still required a good amount of skill and creativity. It’s fascinating to think about how developers worked within those limitations to create something engaging.

    The only time I experienced this system was as an APF Imagination Machine (the home computer expanded version), displayed in the LSU CEBA computer science building in one of the rooms during an "open house" night. I had no idea what it was, just that this computer looked really weird. The game, Rocket Patrol, was not impressive, but it left me wondering for years what it was that I saw. The graphics and text sort of have a TRS-80 CoCo feel.

    • @RetroGamingLoft
      @RetroGamingLoft День назад

      I can see why the graphics and text might remind you of the TRS-80 CoCo. Both systems had that slightly rough, minimalist aesthetic, which was pretty common back then. When I asked my older cousins why they ended up buying the APF, they said it was the game case artwork that won them over. They thought the colorful, friendly images on the covers meant the games themselves would be just as inviting. They weren’t entirely wrong-this console probably has some of the easiest games ever. lol.

  • @ilmestdavisque5391
    @ilmestdavisque5391 3 дня назад

    A game included in the machine, with graphics less "alpha-numeric" than "Boxing"...and to which we can challenge "the A.I.".. well :)

    • @RetroGamingLoft
      @RetroGamingLoft 2 дня назад

      Rocket Patrol, being a built-in game, didn’t exactly represent a step up in competition in the traditional sense. But compared to Boxing, it did feel like more of a challenge. Timing your shots required more attention, and the AI seemed a bit sharper. The changing speed of the enemies added a tiny bit of unpredictability, which made it more engaging. I was very young at the time, but I seem to remember my older cousins-who always bought the latest consoles as soon as they were released-hosting a Rocket Patrol tournament at their house. They were kind enough to pass down most of their consoles to me when they moved on to newer ones, but sadly, I was never gifted this one. It’s one of those systems I wish I’d had the chance to own!

  • @ilmestdavisque5391

    Did this console really have to compete with the V.C.S. from Atari? Well, let’s say that these boxers were brave;)

    • @RetroGamingLoft
      @RetroGamingLoft 2 дня назад

      You're absolutely right-it’s clear the APF MP1000 wasn’t the powerhouse that could stand toe-to-toe with the Atari VCS. But for me, there’s something charming about it. Looking back at consoles like this with a nostalgic eye, you can’t help but appreciate the pioneering spirit they represent. The simplicity, the quirks, and even the limitations all contribute to that unique early-era gaming vibe that really hits in the feels. Sure, it’s not remembered as the best console ever, but it’s a piece of gaming history, and for that alone, I think it deserves a bit of love.

    Hello 5 types of enemies to be précise 😬 I was aware of the 'non progressive' game action but it became boring to create new starships and a real progressive scénario. And i did it on m'y free time as student so all was new to me ... Includibg special CPC 464 memory cases and built in code machine routines. Hello Hervé, thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts and background about Star Fight! It’s really interesting to learn about the challenges you faced as a student working on the CPC 464 with its memory constraints and built-in routines. Developing a game under those conditions must have been quite the learning experience, especially doing it on your own time. I’ll admit, while the repetitive gameplay stood out to me, knowing more about your process and the context of its development adds another layer of appreciation. It’s easy to forget how much effort went into creating games back then, especially for non-professional projects. Again, thank you for sharing this piece of gaming history with us-it’s a great example of the experimentation that defined the early days of home computing! Ps. By the way, given that I only managed to spot four enemy types during my playthrough-what’s the fifth one? I’d love to know what I missed!
