    Would it be easy to link my Akai MPC one to work with the prime 4 together would be amazing since both standalone system

    • @illywhackerDJ
      @illywhackerDJ Год назад

      I’m not sure to be honest. You could connect the output of your Akai MPC into one of the free channels on the DJ mixer and then trigger your samples and loops from your MPC. You’ll have to match the BPMs to the song that’s playing of course! But you’d easily be able to create a workflow to suit your needs. Denon just announced Engine 3.0 software (that the Prime series of players and consoles use, including the Prime 4). Denon have added a new sampler function to the update and it looks like it could be really great! It might be worth joining the Denon DJ forum and asking your question about the Akai MPC there too. I’m 99% certain that the Akai AND Denon are owned by the same company. So there may be some connectivity options between Akai and Denon devices that I don’t know about.

    Rolls and flanger here was redundant, i think. U played calm standard tech - u don't need here such sharp effects. In general - nice smooth mixing and not bad traks - definitely "like". And by the way, the question is - how much did you take the controller and when?

    Nice track selection! Thanks for providing the list, too. Good cam quality. Mix a little bit boring (2 decks, no really special transitions or EFX...) but still OK

    • @illywhackerDJ
      @illywhackerDJ 2 года назад

      Thanks for the valuable feedback, Solaris! Glad you liked the track selection! To be honest, historically, I’ve never been much of a technical DJ, and you make valid points. I learnt to DJ playing only trance music back in 2006/7, which was more of a long format style of DJing with the longer transitions and bread and butter mixing techniques. I’ve only recently moved into the other genres such as house and techno in the last 5 years or so. I’ve been looking at ways to make my mixes more technical when practicing away from the video camera, especially now that I own the Prime 4 which is a very capable piece of DJ equipment. I plan to record some more technical mixes in future, but my preference is still well mixed long format style. Some DJs absolutely butcher the music they play with technical skills/techniques and over use of FX, and it really annoys me if it’s not well done, which is very common. So it kinda puts me off doing the same. As a music producer, I place value on hearing a DJ mix well from record to record and letting the music play as the original artist/producer intended. If a DJ is constantly smashing a flanger, hitting the loop/roll button every 8 bars and non-stop tweaking the filter, it can really become tiresome. That’s just my opinion/preference though. However, as you pointed out. I’m well aware that for a video mix, some viewers will be expecting to see a technical and “busy” mix. As this makes for more entertaining viewing. So, I’m practicing with different techniques and approaches, including more of a ‘live’ track-building approach utilising all 4 decks, and will eventually start to show off more of my skill in future. I should add, I find that the Denon Prime 4 is incredible, but the built in FX are lacking in comparison to my old Pioneer and Korg Kaoss pad set up (not to mention the insanely good izotope FX built into Serato which I also used to use). As such, I tend to avoid using them and only tend to reach for the flanger, echo, reverb and filters. However, a friend of mine works for Denon and he informs me that big updates are coming to the Prime series built in FX. So I look forward to see how they have been improved. Anyway, I appreciate the feedback, and I hope that you’ll find future Mini-Mixes more interesting! 👌🙏

    • @m-stat9
      @m-stat9 2 года назад

      @@illywhackerDJ For that response alone, I gonna follow you ;-) Awesome attitude! And yes, those are good news indeed, since the EFX have been known for being notoriously mediocre. Denon added some badass features over the last 2 years (DMX and Ableton really got me by surprise) but they must focus on the core of their hardware and software (library management). I think they have great potential and have already proven that. I was a die-hard Pioneer guy back then, luckily not anymore. And keep spinning! I am not "technical" either (hence I don't post mixes at all, haha) and do mostly mobile gigs. But as you stated, when someone uploads a Prime 4 video, people expect something more or less "badass" to happen, lol. Take care!

    • @illywhackerDJ
      @illywhackerDJ 2 года назад

      @@m-stat9 haha thanks! I always try to keep a positive attitude towards those who interact with my channel/content! I’m just here trying to share music I enjoy with others and put my Prime 4 to good use! I appreciate any and all constructive feedback, which your initial comment was. The only comments/people I’m likely to snap back at are the trolls. No time for those. 😆 Yeah, I agree. It’s nice to see Denon come back and challenge Pioneer. Denon’s Prime players are better than Pioneer’s offerings, with all the extra features Denon has in their Prime series. However, I think I’d still pick a Pioneer mixer over a Denon mixer. My only gripe is the built in FX with Denon. So I’m really looking forward to see how they are improved upon. Other than that though, I’m super happy with the Prime 4 and wouldn’t change it for anything else currently on the market! And like you say, the Denon community and users can see that they are continuously adding and improving features. Which is awesome! I think we’ll see Denon grow in popularity even more so in the coming years if they keep up their good work! Have you ever checked out Laidback Luke’s videos? Now that’s a technical DJ I’m a fan of 👌

      Hey Ayetrey, That’s a good question, I’m not entirely sure. I’ve only run it in Serato mode twice, but I get the impression you’ll be limited to one laptop because Serato takes over the unit and P4 screen. So it would be best to consolidate to one laptop. However, it works phenomenally well as a Serato controller. It’s so cool that it gets displayed on the Prime 4’s screen. Once you connect your laptop, you can do the entire set without needing to touch your laptop again! Hope this helps! I may be mistaken, but I’m pretty sure it would only run one laptop at a time. If you don’t have enough free ports, then maybe use a USB hub or plan in advance a folder of tunes for you both to work from on one shared USB drive! I’ll get back to you and let you know! Hey Man, Not bad, nice and smooth...I wanted to ask u about your thoughts on the P4. How do u feel about the loose jog wheels? I see that's a big complaint...I have a XDJ-XZ on Back Order as we speak and the date has been shifted again on delivery! I have seriously thought about saying SCREW IT and getting the P4! I love Denon as well as Pioneer. The jog wheels size and no adjustment is what pumped the brakes on the whole thing. Plus, Pioneer is still the Leader in the 90% of clubs worldwide! Going into that setting with already having the XZ as your home setup is huge. I just would like your honest opinion, and I'm spinning DnB & House not hip-hop. Thanks!

      Hey Micah, This is a tough decision to make, I went through the same process of debating which would be better! I waited for Pioneer to release their equivalent to the P4 before deciding. So, here are my honest thoughts, hope you're ready for a long read: The thing that attracted me to the Denon was the innovation. I love how they had the vision to release an all-in-one that was so so similar to playing on Serato with a laptop, yet feeling nice and sturdy with it's build and without the need for a laptop. The features packed into the P4 also swayed me to choose Denon over Pioneer this time around. I came from a Pioneer setup, I was using two CDJ-850s, a DJM-800 and then also a DDJ-SX with Serato, which I found myself using more and more in recent years due to the extra creativity it gave me over my CDJs. So far, I haven't regret my decision to sell all of my Pioneer kit and switch to a P4. Don't get me wrong though, I've had my issues with the P4. I had to return one unit, because it developed a fault (apparently there was a batch released with a faulty hardware component). My replacement P4 was tested and checked before being shipped out to me, and it's been perfect since! So, I would recommend buying from an official Denon dealer to get yourself the extended 2 year warranty, just incase. Jog wheels. To be honest, I quite like them, I prefer the mechanical wheels of the Pioneer stuff, as they feel a bit more weighty and I always preferred the rubber grip around the outside of the jog wheels. The P4 jogs are extremely similar to the jogs that were on the DDJ-SX, so I knew what to expect. I think it's one of those things you adapt to, within a day or two, you'll be used to how they feel. I see some people have said their P4 jogs are too tight, but mine seem to be fine. I honestly have no issue with the jogs on the P4 tbh, it wasn't really a deciding factor in the purchase for me, but each DJ has their own preferences about the kit they use. I would also say that I think the FX of the Denon could be improved. The rate/LFO time for the flanger/phaser etc doesn't go long/slow enough for you to do massively long sweeps like you could on the Pioneer stuff. The longest/slowest the LFO Rate stretches to on the FX is 8 beats/2 bars. If I remember correctly, it was 64 beats on the DJM-800 (off the top of my head, but I'm not certain). The FX themselves sound fine, I would just prefer the option to use slower FX rates. This is my only real gripe with the P4. However, this could be addressed with a simple update, if enough people request the FX be improved in the Denon forums. In fairness, I don't use too many FX. I'm one of these DJs who likes to let the song play as it was intended by the artist and producer, rather than butchering it with non-stop FX. I agree with you when you say that Pioneer is handy to stick with, because the majority of clubs are still Pioneer setups. It's nice having a piece of kit at home that's familiar to the flagship stuff that's in the DJ booths, because it just helps with your preparation. I remember the first time I had a club gig and I rocked up to this flagship CDJ 1000 setup in the DJ booth, it was massively overwhelming having to learn how to use the kit on the fly! However, I think if you're a competent enough DJ, and you do your homework on which kit you'll be playing on for any given gig so that you can check out and download the manual for the kit before the gig so that you know which buttons do what, then it's not a problem. That's what I do! I'm starting to see more Denon stuff rising in popularity (especially with some bigger DJs and artists) over these last couple of years, I think it'll only be a matter of time before clubs will offer both CDJ and Prime players in the clubs. Not all will offer both, but it'll definitely increase over time, I'm sure! If you go with the P4, I would still use Rekordbox to prep your library, and then just import your Rekordbox library into Denon's Engine Prime. That way, you're set up for both systems. You can even plug in your Rekordbox USB into the P4 itself and it'll recognise all your Hot Cues, Loops etc as the P4 can analyse your music, really, cutting out the need for a computer which is cool. I DO prefer prepping in Engine Prime though tbh, I think the software is a little more simple to use. Again, preferences and opinions! Once again, I think the features that the P4 offer, for less cost is a massive plus. Definitely a fan of the 4 channels (even though I mostly use only 2). If I'm not mistaken I believe the Pioneer is limited to 2 channels (the other 2 channels can only be used with Rekordbox, which is a big limitation and means you still need to cart a laptop around if you want to use more than 2 channels). The touch screen on the P4 is really nice and crisp to use, it would bug me going back to anything less now. The sweep FX are also pretty nice, I love the filter, and use it a lot. I also like the customisation options the P4 gives you in the menu areas, it really allows you to tailor the unit to your preferences. The pitch shifting algorithm is also a nice touch. I love how you can shift the key of a track so that it matches the currently playing track. It's a great feature, and sounds pretty good (however, I still think Serato's Pitch 'n' Time algorithm is slightly better). Saying this, I rarely use it, because I'm not sure if the Pioneer stuff can shift the key of a track, so I wouldn't want to become overly reliant on this P4 feature and then be lost without it in a club on Pioneer gear for example. I need to double check if the latest Pioneer stuff can also shift the key, I'm not entirely sure at the time of writing this, but I seem to remember it not being a feature on the Pioneer stuff. A really nice feature (for me, at least), is the MONO switch. It's located on the back and can change your output from Stereo to Mono. As a music producer, this is really cool. It means I can throw my track that I'm working on to my USB stick and check how it sounds in mono on my P4 (hardware mono summers sound much better than software mono summers and give a more accurate representation of what your track will sound like on a club/festival system). To be honest, off the top of my head, I can't remember all the features that the P4 has that the Pioneer unit doesnt without going through both units product pages online, but for the extra money you have to pay for the Pioneer, I think the P4 is the better option tbh. I'm more than happy with the Denon P4. I'm excited to see what Denon bring out in future. The competition they're providing Pioneer with now is going to be great for the future of DJing. I think Pioneer have been lazy over the years since they became undisputed number 1. But now that Denon have come along with somewhat of a resurgance, they're going to force Pioneer to pull their finger out or lose more of their potential userbase to Denon over the years. The P4 does more for less. The SC5000s do more than the CDJ3000, not to mention the newer SC6000, again, all for less money. If you were to peel of the branding from both units, people would jump at the Denon players for sure. For now, I think the Pioneer name still holds some sway, because they're still the 'standard'. Both are great in their own way, but for now, I'm firmly in the Denon camp. I hope this helps you make some sort of decision! Let me know if you have any more questions!

      @@illywhackerDJ Hey Man, I got one! I'm so pumped! All I have done is taken it outa the box. I had to put the kids pool up and last night go to Mom's. This weekend it begins! I'm so pleased! The Heavy construction of the unit it Amazing. I haven't even turned it out...it's sitting down on my basement couch with a blanket over it waiting. I love the tightness of the pitch controls, and the jog wheels are not loose (They feel like touching vinyl to be honest). I also like how Denon packed it with a poster and the lanyard w/Denon DJ on it! It looks and feels incredible! So, I have the book here @ work and it looks like I should go into the site first and setup an account. Do I download something to it before messing with anything? Zzounds told me they just got this batch of 15 in so there Fresh. I made sure of that so I wasn't getting a unit that had been sitting long there. He could see the unit numbers and when they came in. Do I need to download a fresh update right away? I don't have any music downloaded to usb or anything, I was just gonna hookup my 1200's to the far left and right channels to play around. It also gives me a 3 month subscription to TIDAL so I could use that to start off....So excited

      @@micahbageant659 Hey Micah! Awesome news! I'm glad you're impressed with the construction of the unit. Honestly, I love mine, I honestly think it's the best DJ equipment I've ever used. No DJ gear is perfect, but the Denon Prime 4 comes close, in my opinion! I would download the latest 1.6.2 download, make sure to read the instructions that come in the download file (I'm pretty sure there's a 'read me' instructing you how to correctly update depending on which version your unit is currently on). I'm currently on 1.6.1, but I'll download 1.6.2 later. I'd get hold of Denon's Engine Prime software to manage your library. But, like I said before, I'd use Rekordbox to prepare all my cue points and grids etc, then open Engine Prime software to import your Rekordbox library. This means that your music library will be setup and good to use with both Pioneer DJ kit AND Denon DJ kit. Best of both worlds then! USB sticks wise, I recommend getting a fresh USB stick that meets the speed requirements for streaming music in realtime. You want to format your USB stick to the EXFAT format. I just upgraded my USB sticks and purchased the Samsung Bar 256gb USB 3.1 sticks which exceed the speed requirements listed by Denon. I bought 2 of them so that I have a backup incase one of them fails in future. I simply make alterations on my Rekordbox/Engine Prime library stored on my computer. Then when I'm happy with them, I delete the same folders on my DJ USB sticks and copy the updated library folders on my computer to the USB sticks to update the USB drives so that they show my latest changes. If this makes sense? I'm sure it will once you start diving in and prepping your music library. Yeah, set up an account and register your serial number on your Denon/InMusic account. Also, I didn't get a Denon DJ lanyard in my box! I'm going to have to complain now... ;) Enjoy your Prime! Hopefully you don't run in to any faults like I did (if you do, organise a warranty return through your retailer that you bought it from, rather than Denon itself). Let me know how you find it once you get to grips with it!

    • @illywhackerDJ
      @illywhackerDJ 3 года назад

      Lol. Definitely not pre-recorded. It would have taken some choreography to match my movements with the ‘pre-recorded’ mix as you claim. It would be easier to just DJ in real-time like I have here, rather than go through the painstaking effort of trying to mimic DJing in front of a camera pointing directly at the decks for all to see... 🤔🤣🤯 I use the EQs set to isolator mode, so when I’m transitioning to the next record, I instantly throw the channel fader up and blend the two tracks using the EQ only, as it allows the DJ much more control over their transitions. When the EQ knobs are all the way over to the 7 o’clock position, even with the channel fader all the way up, no sound will be heard if all 3 EQ bands are turned all the way down. Make sense? So when you see me touching the knobs for no reason, that’s actually me mixing the two tracks together. But, if you want to believe it’s pre-recorded, be my guest. 🤷‍♂️😆

      @@SehxualPanda haha, I think the guy who tried to shoot me down with his comment jumped to a conclusion too soon before fully understanding what it was that I was doing. I guess people are used to seeing most DJs use the channel faders for mixing tracks. So it probably throws them off when they see a DJ using the Isolator EQ to mix instead. It’s just always been my preference to mix using Isolator, offers so much more control during transitions, blending those frequency bands. I’ve always found it quite difficult to move the faders up and down smoothly when trying to do longer transitions. So a rotary style mixing technique works better for me! I’d love a rotary mixer in future! 👌

      @@illywhackerDJ 10Q mate. Which equipment do you prefer? Pioneer RX2 or Denon Prime 2?

    • @illywhackerDJ
      @illywhackerDJ 3 года назад

      @@sandorpetofi67, I used to have a full Pioneer set up (CDJ850, DJM800, Korg Kaoss Pad KP3+ and also a Pioneer DDJ-SX with Serato). I sold all of it to switch over to Denon. I feel like Denon are really pushing to innovate and bring new features to the DJ booth, and at a cheaper price than what Pioneer are offering. Playing with this Prime 4 is just like having the best of both worlds, quality, sturdy hardware, and a built-in, powerful operating system that kind of captures everything I liked about playing on Serato. So far, I haven't had any regrets from switching from Pioneer over to Denon. My only gripe is that I think the Denon's onboard FX aren't as great as what I had on my Pioneer equipment, they're good enough, don't get me wrong, but I'd make a couple of changes such as longer rate/LFO times for effects like the Flanger etc. I only really enjoy using the Flanger and Bitcrushing FX on the Denon. The built-in Reverb and Delay/Echo are as good as any, there are also a couple of FX that I think are pointless and never use them. In fairness, I'm not a DJ who likes to use many FX anyway, as I prefer to let an audience hear the song as the artist/producer intended, so I keep my FX use to a minimum. The Sweep FX are pretty good though, I mostly use it for the Lowpass/Highpass Filter, and the Wash effect is good for making transitions. I should add that I really like the customisation of the Denon, you can go into the preferences and fine-tune the device to your tastes. So you can alter the EQ type (Normal or Isolator Mode, I use Isolator), you can also change the EQ crossover frequencies for the LOW, MID and HIGH bands. You can even choose how much Resonance that the Filter uses, which is a nice touch too. Plus there are a bundle of other settings you can change too. The key takeaway point is, no DJ gear is perfect, however, Denon provide more features to the DJ for less money than Pioneer's equivalent products. I like both brands, but I'm more excited with what Denon are doing right now and I think their Prime products will become more and more popular in the coming years! My honest advice, if I had to pick between the Pioneer RX2 and the Prime 2, I'd get the Denon Prime 2. If I remember correctly, it's as powerful as the Prime 4, just with two decks/mixer channels, compared to the 4 decks/mixer channels on the Prime 4. I hope this helps?! I typed a lot and it's a bit of a jumbled mess, but they were just thoughts off the top of my head. If you really want to see a pro using the Denon gear, search for Laidback Luke's channel! He has a few videos showing off the Denon gear!

    • @illywhackerDJ
      @illywhackerDJ 3 года назад

      Hey James, for some reason, RUclips held your comment for review, so I have only just seen it! My apologies! The Denon Prime 4 has a built-in record function which allows you to record directly to your USB stick/SD Card/External Drive. So I use this, I find setting my channel gains to 12 o'clock gets a nice level when recording. I then export the recorded mix over to my Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) for further editing and general cleaning up. I use Bitwig Studio for editing tasks after the mix has been recorded. Simple editing tasks like boosting and making sure the volume level is consistent throughout the mix, and trimming the start and end of the mix, adding some subtle EQ to try and maintain some consistency to the overall sound. If you're not using a Denon Prime 4 and don't have a built-in record option. Then recording the output of your DJ mixer using cables into your computer and software such as Audacity (free) will allow you to achieve the same results. It was filmed using my GoPro Hero 4 Black camera on a gooseneck stand. I give the footage to my brother-in-law who edits all my videos. He edits and syncs up the final audio file of the mix using Adobe Premiere. We then use some freeware called Handbrake to shrink the size of the final video if need be. So it's two or three separate processes really: 1. Recording of the mix on the Denon itself, then editing the mix and mastering it in my DAW/editing software. 2. Recording the film footage. Sending the footage and final, mastered audio file of my mix to my bro-in-law who then syncs it up and exports the final video file 3. Optional. Handbrake the video to shrink its size. I'm currently creating a blog post on my website on how I record and edit my mixes to host online to get them sounding as good as possible! If you follow any of my social media channels, you'll see when this blog post is finished and available to check out if you're interested! Hope this helps! Feel free to drop me a message on any of my social media platforms if you have other questions, ill try to help if I can! :)

      @illywhackerDJ 3 года назад

      @@djmanifestation688 Thanks, man! Appreciate the kind words! No worries, I hope the info helps with your future setups! The only downside to my set up is that I position the gooseneck stand in the middle of my decks, so it sits near the crossfader. I have to physically work around it, which sometimes can be a pain because it's one more thing I need to think about (not knocking it with my hand) when concentrating on mixing! Sometimes I do catch it when using the Sweep FX buttons just above the crossfader, so it's not a perfect set up, but it does the trick, mostly. The camera is positioned at chest height, so I did consider getting a chest harness for my GoPro. I thought the motion of me bobbing around whilst mixing would put people off, though. This was confirmed when I saw a video by another DJ a few days ago that actually used this chest harness method; I almost felt a little dizzy watching it because he was moving around so much. He was playing Drum & Bass, so he was moving pretty quickly. Lol. I turned the mix off after about 30 seconds. So, my advice would be to find a suitable solution to get a stationary mount with a clear view of your decks/mixer if you're looking to alter your video setup. I'll be looking to remove the gooseneck from my setup eventually and maybe place a GoPro mount on the ceiling that allows me to position the camera above me. The two tracks seemed to mix well, for sure! It's great when you stumble across a couple of records that go nicely together! I'll check your mix now, got a few tasks to do on my laptop so some background music will be good!
