    "Training" other leather crafters to have/run a leather business? LOL. What, you think you are a teacher now? What college are you teaching at? Where did you get your teaching degree? You can't teach someone else how to run their business, as it's not YOUR business. Each of us run it different, each of us have a different market, each of us have different customers. I love how every industry has their own self proclaimed "experts" that want to teach everyone how to do the business they yak about (and charge them a real "nominal" fee). Hilarious. Yet no one like you can see how you are just taking advantage of people with every dollar you charge or every product you promote (again for a "nominal" fee). Does your program come with a guarantee? Do you believe in what you sell so much you will guarantee the participants will not fail? Of coarse not. Snake oil salesmen. If you want to actually "help" people, it should not be when you can enrich your own pocket. That's not "helping", it's making money (aka a business). Charity and a business are not the same thing. Goody, another channel to add to the block list.

      Hides often do have sqft on the back of them, but there have been several times that I've received a side that either had no stamp or small parts were cut out of the side (and used for samples, I suppose) and one of those parts happened to contain the stamped square footage. I'm glad there was some value you were able to glean from the video. Thank you so much!

      @@justanazareneleatherco There is a very old method for measuring the area of an irregular shape by using comparative weights. It can be very accurate and very easy to do, as long as you have a balance/scale of appropropriate size and a large piece of scrap material that is at least as large as the hide. You also need a piece of material that you don't mind scrapping that is large enough to make a template of the hide. Newspaper, wrapping paper, butcher's paper, craft paper, old bed sheet or a tarp -- whatever it is needs to be a single piece... you can't tape several pieces together. The weight of the tape will throw off the measurement. You trace the perimeter of the hide onto the paper/fabric and cut it out. Then you weigh the cut-out material. Then cut out as precisely as possible 1 sq ft of the same material and weigh it. The proportion of their weights is equal to the proportion of their respective areas. Example: The paper template of the hide weighs 64.5 g. One square foot of the same paper weighs 3.1 grams. The hide is 64.5/3.1 = 20.8 sq ft. Make sense? You need a scale that is appropriate for the weights you'll be measuring. Like a bathroom scale wouldn't be good here. This was a very common practice in science and math for determining the area of an irregular shape before we had computers and other devices to measure or estimate the shapes directly.

      That's a good idea...the only problem that I potentially see with 2 of them is the longer insert pieces. An extra long jig like you suggest would probably take a major upcharge with shipping. I think 6 foot would be oversize with UPS and the box to ship it probably run 7-10 bucks a piece. Many of us get along fine with a 2x4 with slots cut in it to burnish belts. Nice idea, costs too much, and takes too much fiddling when a chunk of 2x4 and a few slots will do the same thing. It's just there to hold the belt vertical. This doesn't need to get complicated and expensive. You obviously have tools that you modified this jig with, grab a chunk of 2x4 and make your own jig. It's not very hard. I cut my slots on my table saw.

      Thank you for watching and commenting! No, because we do our stamping with an 8-ton press if we were to wet the leather, the brass stamp most likely cut through the leather in a few places. First off, I really like your chart and your way of calculating. I just have a few questions. When you where talking about the FN cover, you rounded up from 0.71 to 1.0, but you say to round up to the nearest quarter which would be 0.75? That would only put you at around 5 % added right? Second question is I'm still a relative newbie at buying leather hides, so I don't pretend to know much about it, but I run into the mentioned problem of paying X amount for a hide of let's say 10 SqFt and finding 2 SqFt of unusable leather, and I was wondering if you take something like that into account, when you calculate the added percentage? English is not my first language so I appologize if my questions are unclear. I really enjoy your content.

    • @justanazareneleatherco
      @justanazareneleatherco 3 месяца назад

      These are great questions, and I will do my best to answer them clearly. First, the 0.71 sqft was the EXACT area taking into account the two cutouts (total area - area of cutouts). My method is just the total area then round up to the nearest quarter. The total area calculation was just barely over 0.754 sqft. See time stamp 39:10 - 39:25. Since the total area was just above three quarters, I rounded up to one. Second, all leather hides have unusable square footage. There is nothing anybody can do about the actual leather, but the way that we as leathercrafters account for that unusable area is to add an additional 20% - 30% to our leather calculations when we price something. This is the main point of the video, but it sounds like you are asking how this concept applies to when you are purchasing leather. So this is how I would approach the problem, and I will use the example numbers you mentioned in your question. If you have a project (or group of projects) that based on your pattern will require you to use 9 SqFt of leather, then you would need to buy 2 of the 10 SqFt hides to account for the 2 SqFt of unusable leather on each hide. If you only bought one, you would only have 8 SqFt of usable leather and therefore be unable to complete your project (or group of projects). In that case, I would buy 2 hides, complete my project(s) and then find another project to use the remaining usable leather from the second hide (7 SqFt remaining). I hope my answers make sense. These are great questions, and I appreciate you watching and commenting on so many of my videos!

      @justanazareneleatherco Man I'm an over the hill 63 year old builder, now watching over my mom who has alzheimers. My leather journey has been unexpected. Really an exercise in creativity. I am in the middle of purchasing a cobra 26 from a young man 6 hours away. I have a coyboy outlaw currently and look forward to refining my work. Haven't made a dollar yet but hope too soon. I enjoy you're videos much. Thanks for putting them out sir

    That's an embarrassing conversation to have with someone... "Hey, your Tzit tzit's sticking out."

    So, talk about timing. I am looking at the long game for a business. Developing and making products. I am planning to relocate, so I'm not familiar with the market in that location. I send samples to a few friends. No cost to them. They complete a survey so I can make adjustments if needed and check me on pricing. I have sold items in the past but not as a product line. I just shipped an item 15 minutes ago because my item was seen by a coworker of my friend,who had to have one. I wasn't looking to make sales at this point. It can be a bigger gift to yourself by giving of yourself. It was an unintended sale because I needed feedback. I like where this is going!

      Your journey sounds exciting! Thank you for taking time to comment, and I'm glad you are reaping the benefits of giving (products or of yourself) first. Thanks awesome!

    Awesome! Thanks for the update! Do you plan on adding on the Junior belt pouches back to the normal offerings at some point?

      At some point, yes, but I don't have an exact date yet. We plan to have the Jr. Belt Pouches and Youth sized belts as standard items in our Outdoor Line of products.

    Still waiting for the shofar carrying strap!

      Me too! It is still in the works, brother. I refuse to go into debt to build this business, so I am working to get more sales to cover the up-front cost of the new leather I need for the shofar carrying straps.
