How I Got Started Playing Music

Someone over on Tik Tok asked how I got started playing music, so I figured I’d dial it all the way back to the beginning with Raffi and supportive parents!

I like doing tracks like this, where I try to uncover the catchiest, grooviest thing I can play. It’s a fun puzzle to solve.

How I Got Started in the Music Business
Can you tell me what kind of aux I need? with microphone or without? because I tried with an aux cable with jack adapter but it doesn't work let me know thanks
This is totally a lifesaver ... I had the HX Stomp for a while, but picked up an MS-3 and seeing how you've put the MS3 in the HX loop, but use the MS3 to switch patches on both, genius! The simple pedal board is fabulous. I have a Morningstar ML-5 midi controlled loop switcher so if I wanted to have more drives then I could use the MIDI to pick which drives are in the loop ... but that sounds far too complex at the moment :D Thank you, and best wishes for your career to continue upwards and onwards.
@@makingmusiconline2309 thank you so much for this kind comment! Best of luck as you put together your board.
Ellen, this is such an interesting video I stumbled across. I have both an MS3 and Hx Stomp, but on different boards. Love how you combined them. Just curious, what do you think of the onboard overdrives and distortions of the MS? I really struggle to like them personally…
@@zacharynorman397 thanks Zachary! I found the distortions on the MS-3 were nice with a little tweaking. The Crunch and Rat were my favorites.
Nice handmade pedalboard. I'm considering gifting myself with a Boss MS-3 and a TuneX and I might go in the same direction with some scrap MDF. 2:05 And you just granted yourself a free pass to heaven by drawing the signal chain. Many people on YT don't do that and sometimes it's pretty hard to understand it.
Pretty good at dancin❤❤
Sounds like “Love of my life” by Queen. Maybe just a little, but it’s wonderful tone! 👍🏼
Love it! I need to hire you to do some tracks for my project!!!
im obsessed with how every musician has their own face they make when playing an instrument. my one friend chews her lip and the more intricate the finger movements, she more she bites and wiggles her mouth it’s the best 😂
Sounds really good with the track. I liked the walk down a lot
Sounds perfect, it'll be interesting to hear EQ'd with a little gain.
So on your iPad with the pencil in Notes? I have to do a bunch of charts and I saw how some people did them. You divide the sheet in half and read down from left to right. You made that look really easy I’m sure it will be harder to do than that for me. But it’s doable I think?
I have used everything but mostly use Dunlop Tortex .88mm green standard shape picks my whole life. Seems like a real 'rubber meets the road' sort of thing, what with it being the one contact point with the string. I feel like using the same thing most of the time gives an advantage of reducing variables, kind of like having the strap adjusted so that the guitar sits in the same position whether sitting or standing. $75 for picks? Damn right, I'm worth it! 😉
I love your content. Keep it up!
@@brianjohnston4124 hey thanks Brian!
Do you recall where you bought the input jack? Any model or measurement information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks much!
I followed the posts I found on VGuitarForums.com. The thread is called "Waza Air Mod 1/8" Stereo Line Output." Best of luck!
Ellen, do you custom install the 1/8” aux input jacks for Waza Airs….I don’t have the technical expertise to try it….thanks! Gary
@@garydkicken5846 sorry Gary, I don’t!
Only 24 views?! Thank you so much for this clearly demonstrated friendly tutorial for this fiddly part!
@@SpencerHart-hz5cb you’re welcome, Spencer! I’m glad you’re one of those 24!
what song?
@@Sludgeeeeee it’s called “Dreamers” by the band Wild Ponies!
I have a Korg Phase Shifter...old as dirt, difficult and expensive to replace. It still lives on my board because it is critical to MY sound. No point in 'saving' a pedal to protect it. If it never gets heard, it might as well be broken. Does it even exist at that point? Informative video.
Nice bumper sticker!
@@brucearntson8549 don’t you love to hear me sing!
I watched a video from Venus Theory yesterday talking about the benefits of checking a mix on an intentionally crappy speaker. Do you do critical listening on multiple output devices? Are any of them intentionally low end?
@@DerekPennycuff whoa great question! Since I’m not mixing this recording (just sending two discreet tracks), I didn’t in this case. But yes, when I’m doing a quick mix, I like to listen to it on my monitors, in my car, and on the speakers of my phone to have an idea of what it sounds like in all contexts!
@@ellenangelico Oh, listening in the car is a great idea. I hadn't thought of that one. Thanks for sharing.
I love these videos. You have a fantastic way of explaining a handful of deeper MS3 functions. Helps make the complicated stuff a little more intuitive. Great job!
I always enjoy it watching the process and the places you are playing. I think it’s content worthy of the internet! 😊
I saw you in the opener of the Honeymind tour in Seattle! Your voice is beautiful and you're super talented :)
Who is in charge of making your bookings on this tour? They are landing some amazing venues.
You did exactly what i wish but they are expensive and i'm too Much of a chiken.
"This is the content" ❤😂
The expensive one sounds worse
Looks like a really solid pick that will last you a while, so I'd say it's worth :)
If that’s what it takes. I use Tortex .5 which I twist to get more bite. Of course I’m just sitting around the house playing for my own pleasure.
Sweet sounding guitar and cool video, nice wee nugget of knowledge you're sharing there on a guitar manufacturer that's new to me Cheers
@@ShinyRacer22 glad you dug it!
Cool strap
There used to be two great music stores in Falls Church. Did you play at the State Theater? I grew up in the area but the last time I was there, the only thing I recognized was the theater.
@@leatherchopper played at Wolf Trap actually!
@@ellenangelico Wolf Trap is where I learned to drive in snow doing donuts in the snow.. The last time I was there was John Prineopening for Richard Thompson.
Tripping over a practice set of bagpipes seems a bit too specific to have been made up on the spot. I sense lived experience.
@@DerekPennycuff haha fortunately (or unfortunately?) I made that one up.
I had a girlfriend that was 13 years younger than me and she kept asking what I wanted to do with my life. I told her I was doing what I wanted. Some people think you’re lazy if you’re not trying to advance. I learn something every day. Maybe they don’t understand because they aren’t doing what they want.
Well said!
Yep! I’m not stalking you I’m just a big fan and enjoy these little glimpses into the road!
That venue looks amazing. I'm glad you get some time to enjoy the local sights, see old friends, and read a book. Life on the road can't be easy. Claim whatever moments of joy present themselves.
Neat video! Appreciate the attention to detail and the visuals
Hey thanks!
I liked and subscribed. As some feedback, I wish your videos weren't vertical on the main video feed. Great content, though!
Thanks! I'm glad you enjoy it.
wtf is half a guitar?
Haha in this case it was just a pedalboard.
Looks life a fulfilling life
Going to be in Nashville briefly Saturday, 6/15. Playing any festivals then that I could catch you performing?
Nope sorry, not this weekend! I try to keep my shows listed on my website if you’re back again in the future. Ellenangelico.com!
A gig _and_ a girlfriend?!
Hahaha as you can see, all my dreams have come true!
GREAT VIDEO. What kind of plugs are you using for the input and L1 (send & return) into the MS3? I have SP400 and i cant get them to plug into the MS3 together. They're too big.
Hey thanks! I made those cables myself. Can’t remember what brand the connectors are, it’s been a while, sorry!
@@ellenangelico Great board... Thanks no probs
Nice!
Unfortunately this year I haven't played my guitar enough for the strings to really need changing yet. But I've got a pack of String Joys waiting for when that day comes.
Just imagine if you'd had to run up that hill lugging a P bass instead.
Haha exactly!
Noob question: Why tape over the pickup before cleaning the fret board?
Great question! Since the pickups are magnetic, and I was using steel wool, tape keeps annoying little bits of steel wool from sticking to the pickup.
@@ellenangelico Ah! Magnets and tiny shards of metal. That makes sense. Thanks for cluing me in.
Noob question, but what model is this? :)
Not a noob question at all! It’s a Sterling by Music Man Mariposa. Cool guitar!
@@ellenangelico thanks, very beautiful! Nice work too 🙏
