    Those effects in the first level were part of a random biome modifier. When you first entered, it said "you feel forces pushing and pulling you", and that is telling you that these will be randomly scattered through the level. It's a pretty rare modifier, so you don't see it very often

    I think I won't finish reading the book. I was hyped in the beginning and genuinely enjoying the first half but I have to admit: I think it's boring af. I re-read the entire Inheritance Cycle so that I am up to date with Eragon so I can read Murtagh.... it's by far my least favourite book. The plot feels random, the pacing feels off and Murtagh doesn't seem to be the character I thought he was. I was expecting more.

    So just my two cents, Godzilla Minus one is at the top of my list for 2023 along with Oppenheimer. In fact I feel they would make a good double feature with Oppenheimer first then Godzilla minus one. Seen several RUclips videos already do edits of the end of Oppenheimer when he's lamenting about what they unleased with cuts from both the original 1954 Gojira/Godzilla Minus one. Great list.

    • @thedragonslibrary

      That's a cool idea. While I wasn't as thrilled about Oppenheimer, both have a focus on the terror of the nuclear warfare.

    •Giving a story a "lethal twist" only works if the "lethal twist" actually has a point. As is, the "lethal twist" in Fourth Wing doesn't add tension (especially when it's used so childishly), but makes the top brass running Basgaiath look horribly dumb because of logistical errors so obvious even *I* can point them out. •The problem with Fourth Wing's "cool conspiracy mystery" is precisely that it wasn't done right because there was no reason for any government to operate this way unless they were very stupid (Fitting with how the military top brass operates, but you're not supposed to want that). The Five Elder Stars in One Piece also mastermind a "cool conspiracy mystery" that we still have very few details about over a decade later, but the difference there is that they at least have an official reason for erasing entire islands from existence that makes sense on the face of it. The same cannot be said of the Navarrean government.

    • @thedragonslibrary
      @thedragonslibrary 7 месяцев назад

      But it did have a point? The leaders decided they did want to fight but instead hide behind the wards. That was made easier by making the public see the gryphon riders as aggressive outsiders and not even knowing about the other war. Yeah, it was a short sighted and stupid decision, but that's kind of the main point the main characters make. The Iron Flame even specifically showed by the end that they weren't really safe, thus emphasizing the idea that cooperation and empathy was the solution, not isolationism. Hell, even the lethal twist, which is good for adding tension in the first book, is calle out by the gryphon riders as rather f**ked up. I liked that the mystery added a direction to the earlier parts of the story. And I like characters having work out hidden parts of the world. Plus, plenty of stories have conspiracies that don't quite make sense. Hell, it's basically the Ba Sing Se conspiracy from Avatar the last Airbender, given a few extra centuries. Pretend the war doesn't exist inside the wall/wards. Kill off or brainwash any who try and spread the truth. Any who manage to make a scene you portray as traitors and criminals. I do agree that the Navarian government are stupid. That's kinda the point by the end of the iron flame. They got so concerned with the rebellion kids, they ignored the fact that a venin had been created from a rider INSIDE the wards. If they had spent more than five seconds of thought on it, that one fact should have made it clear they were not at all safe. That was really stupid! Thanks so much for the well thought out comment though, and sorry if this reply was a little long. I do agree that as One Piece has a much more well thought out evil government conspiracy. I really want to know what happened during the lost century.

    • @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd
      @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd 7 месяцев назад

      @@thedragonslibrary •You don't need to maintain any kind of conspiracy for that going so far as to remove entire books of folklore from your library. This isn't like the Poneglyphs where the government can say you were trying to revive ancient world-destroying weapons. On the contrary, it would actually be in Navarre's best interest to not only make the existence of Venin, but propagandize it to the point of nausea. It's a lot easier to say "Poromiel is full of Venin stooges who want to eat your babies" than to constantly edit history. •The gryphon riders lampshading Navarre's recruitment practices doesn't work when it's done purely from a morality standpoint. Morality is the least of the issues here. It is absolutely counterintuitive to a functioning war machine. You are needlessly culling limited human resources that can be put elsewhere. Like I said, there is a difference between a ruthless and efficient war machine that cares nothing for the humanity of its components and one that is so plagued with needless logistical errors so obvious even *I* can point them out. •On the surface, yes, this is comparable to Ba Sing Se. That is until you realize that even the Dai Li had an implicit reason for their actions that was established through proper worldbuilding and furthermore stood out tonally from the rest of the story up to that point. Rebecca, on the other hand, created a conspiracy for the sake of having a conspiracy in a story too interested in its main character's hormones to worldbuild.

  • @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd
    @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd 8 месяцев назад

    Let's be honest here: Rebecca lampshaded how unbelievably stupid Navarre's military is because she kept getting made fun of for it online. This isn't a case of a Darwinist war machine. This is a case of a military being self-destructively evil for the sake of pretending there are stakes in the plot. Chances are that's the reason the government is suppressing the existence of Venin, too. There's absolutely no good reason to do it other than for Rebecca Yarros to invoke tropes that YA's target audience will unfortunately eat up uncritically. At least when the Five Elder Stars wipe entire islands off the map they justify it by saying they were trying to revive ancient weapons.

  • @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd
    @GatekeeperGuardian-wv3cd 8 месяцев назад

    •There's certainly potential for good worldbuilding, but that is not the same thing as it actually existing. Navarre's "religion" is a perfect example of this. All you're given is information that this religion exists and has a bunch of proper nouns attached to it, but the mythological or cultural significance of those proper nouns is never elaborated on and most DEFINITELY serve no significance to the story at large. The potential for good worldbuilding most certainly COULD have existed, but doesn't most likely because it would come into contact with Yarro's IRL political beliefs. I'm certainly not going to fault her for being uncomfortable with fleshing out the unfortunate implications of the world she created but I'm also not going to pretend the worldbuilding she DOES put in is good by any stretch of the imagination. •My guy, this is a book that not only info dumps all the time, but info dumps in some of the dumbest ways imaginable and in ways that are DEFINITELY explaining just for the sake of explaining. Yarros couldn't think of a way to set up the world naturally, so what does she do? She has the main character recite worldbuilding facts for the benefit of no one but the audience and claim it's just a nervous tick. I am far from the first person to point out how unnatural and blatant this ends up sounding. I probably would have actually preferred if Gandalf just showed up and told the audience what they needed to know as at least at that point Yarros isn't putting up the thinnest facade to disguise what she's doing. Worse yet is, like the world's "religion", a great many of these facts are completely irrelevant to the story anyway making this info dumping that most definitely does exist an obnoxious waste of time. •No, Violet is not intelligent just because the narrative says so. That is not how characterization works. Going based on what is actually shown rather than what is told, Violet is an immature valley girl who spends too much time on Tiktok and is therefore unable to control her hormones. There is certainly the setup for an underdog story like in My Hero Academia or Black Clover but, unlike Midoriya or Asta, Violet does a grand total of nothing to earn her powers let alone her OP Mary Sue status (In this case constituting powers so overpowered that even Hirohiko Araki couldn't write an answer to them other than to give the protagonist the same ability), The plot just gives them to her simply because she's the main character girl. In theory something like having two rare dragon bonds COULD have been balanced out by her disability, but for what ever reason Yarros seems to magically forget that she even has this disability half way through the story despite this being a condition Yarros herself has in real life. She should know the things she's saying Violet can do are suspension breaking but simply doesn't care. •When a story pushes one love interest over the other as hard as this one does then that's no longer a love triangle. I've heard some people refer to it as a "love corner" which is a term I like, but either way it's the absolute wrong way to write a love triangle. At that point why even have Dain in the story at all? A good love triangle is one where the fanbase will kill each other over the sheer number of shipping wars that will happen over it which is even something even Stephanie Meyer understood (up to a point). The only praise that can be given here is that at least Yarros didn't straight up retcon her love interests the way Sarah J Maas did.

    i saw the movie a while ago too and my opinion of it is this: Its a mediocre plot that needs some stuff added and removed, a bigger budget overall, concentrate more on the mafia ordeal and how the drug is created, remove the whole mutant thing (the stop motion was pretty good just not the story), change the title of the movie, also less scenes of the detective in the bedroom with the woman, get another studio and director for it cause the originals are horrible, also better actors. my mom was the one who stumbled upon this movie, that night i was going to watch movies with her and showed me the movie and we started watching it, she got bored and fell asleep while i watched the whole thing, why did i subject myself to it, had hope of it not being as bad as it is, do i regret it, no, why, cause it made me find reviews of people absolutely destroying it lmao.
