As Victor Constant Note Record No. 6 and the Victrola Alhambra I are roughly contemporary (both from around late 1925/early 1926), I thought it would be interesting to compare how the record sounded on the Alhambra, especially as compared to my homemade 80 Hz horn. The bass response drops off much more rapidly on the Alhambra than on the 80 Hz horn from 160 to 110 Hz, the Alhambra's response ha...

      It's a disc machine--I made it with a Victor motor and turntable, Victor Orthophonic soundbox, HMV tone-arm, makeshift homemade cabinet, and homemade horn based on the EMG gramophones of the 1930s.

    100 Hz one has a little bit of what sounds like a rattle on some of the lower notes

    • @e.q.b.gramophones7506
      @e.q.b.gramophones7506 11 дней назад

      Could be--I have another record ("Blue Again" by Duke Ellington, 1930) with very strong bass and very pronounced wear on the bass notes; on the 100 Hz horn, it sounds like a buzzing rattle with a hint of bass, but on the 80 Hz horn, it sounds like bass with a bit of rattle. Not sure whether it's that the bigger horn has more bass, so the rattle is less noticeable, or whether it's because the needle doesn't rattle around in the groove on the bass notes if the horn is big enough to pass them instead of reflecting them back into the horn.

    Kahn had an interesting life, much of privilege (came from a wealthy family) He had his own band at age 18 in 1925 and started cutting records that year. What he didn't have was longevity as he died at age 54 in 1962. I enjoyed his work as I have this and some other 78s of his songs. The flip side of this one (George Olsen's 'Do Do Do") is also a good number.

    The actual composer of this piece was the incomparable British (later American) organist Edwin H Lamare. Originally titled Andantino. Ben Black and Neil Moret (real name Charles Daniels) used the melody without permission adding words. It became a popular hit. Lemare threatened legal action but subsequently received his due royalties.

    Does this rare Orthophonic Victrola have a brass or potmetal reproducer?

    • @e.q.b.gramophones7506
      @e.q.b.gramophones7506 16 дней назад

      The original soundbox was an early pot-metal version, but as it was swollen and crumbling and the needle-bar pivots were out of alignment, I'm currently using a later pot metal soundbox (from a Victrola VV 2-55 portable).

    Interesting results to hear & surprised that such a record would be produced so early on in the electric recording era. Wonder how this would have sounded (if at all) on the motley collection of gramophones available then, many of which would date to the acoustic recording era.

    • @e.q.b.gramophones7506
      @e.q.b.gramophones7506 Месяц назад

      I was surprised when I learned about these records, too--they're very useful, though! I'm guessing that a pre-Orthophonic machine would be able to reproduce at least the higher notes on this record, but might have trouble tracking the lower notes--even on my homemade gramophone, with a professionally-rebuilt soundbox and large horn, I had to leave off my usual counterweight in order to keep the needle in the groove, especially for notes on side A (110-125 Hz). At some point, I plan to do a similar test video of my c. 1926 Victrola Alhambra (one of the early Orthophonics) which is roughly contemporary with this record.

    Ah a late acoustical recording from 1928 after everyone else had moved to electronic recording technology. Apparently Columbia upgraded an acoustical studio in 1924 and did not want to waste their investment. So they used it for their discount Velvet Tone label. I suppose you could say this represents the epitome of acoustical recording in it's final days.

    If I might be permitted to wander today to the hill to watch the scene below. This was a song my great-great aunt Hattie use to sing to me long ago when I was young. And now I am aged and grey - though not quite as aged and grey as she was then - she having been born in 1884 and I now just a year shy of 70. It is hard to explain how many years one person can bridge without having lived them by having known people who did. Even more astonishing was that her mother -my great, great grandmother - with whom I shared a birthday and who turned 100 when I turned 9 said to me that day, "When I was born Abraham Lincoln was president!" So while I usually think of this song in a more sentimental turn of the century style, I always enjoy hearing it in any form.
