I just stumbled on this today (9th June 2024). I love this piece of music and, from time to time, have a look around on here to see if anyone's posted a solo guitar version. I spent months grappling with a guitar solo of my own invention and would have given anything to have had access to the manuscript contained in your video! Not being (even remotely) musically inclined it was a mammoth struggle for me but I suppose that made it so much more worthwhile when I slotted in those last few notes to give me something I was reasonably content with. Have you listened to the Nelson Ladies' version? I never tire of listening to this and have yet to find a finer version. I also admire a guitar solo by David Price - almost as priceless as the Ladies from Nelson (and gets silver!). I haven't awarded bronze yet as there are so many contenders! Can I wish every success to you and the New Century Singers of Bovey Tracey on the 11th of June? I really wish I could be there to cheer you and the choir on but I live just north of Newcastle upon Tyne and it's a bit of a distance to go at such short notice! I don't suppose you're planning to record the event and post it on here are you? I'd really love to see it. Best wishes, and I hope all goes well on the night (as I'm sure it will). And who knows? New Century Singers of Bovey Tracey could be up for bronze (or even supersede my other favourites and claim gold!). They'd better be good! No pressure then!

I’m learning to play the penny whistle. How hard would it be to transition to the fife from the penny whistle after I’ve learned to play it? Do you play either of these?
I have played a penny whistle and I have a Yamaha fife. The penny whistles I have played are often set up for one key (for folk music - mine is in D). A lot of the fingerings are the same on whistle, recorder, fife and flute (and saxophone), but there are key differences. I have put up a few fife videos for my primary school classes - it might be worth checking them out.

@@JaneAndersonBrown have you ever watched the RUclips channel called twistin tin? they play the fife and whistle together with a lambeg drum it sounds amazing. There’s a tune called the mountain horn pipe that is my favourite.

We bought it a couple of years ago, it is published by Chappell, but we had a long wait for it to arrive. I have put rehearsal tracks up for all four voices as well as this complete one at the request of the choir.

My husband noted there seemed to be some inspiration from "dogging"
When I did 'After The Ball Is Over' in karaoke it was 'after the stars had 'gawn' to rhyme with 'dawn' and sound a bit more cockney-ish. Then when we did it in lunchtime singing club at school it was completely different lyrics 'after the ball was over, she took out her glass eye, put her false teeth in water, shook from her hair the dye'. Very very ribald by Victorian standards but okay to sing at school in the early 1980s!!
I remember my grandmother singing it to me when I was a child. No cockney accent there!
