    First time I've come across an educational department record. Can only think it was to teach children about the different sections of the orchestra. Some time back I posted 'Bugle Calls Of The British Army' which I assume was used to train soldiers.

    Wonderful! Thanks for posting! I suppose some might consider the static part of the charm, but perhaps you could put the audio through some noise-reduction software? It does seem louder than necessary.

      I appreciate the comment and I understand that not everyone loves the scratchiness of these 100-plus-year-old records like I do. (It's actually in the name of my channel!) I try not to use recordings that are TOO scratchy, but it's a bit of a judgment call and sometimes even I disagree with my decision later. In the future, I plan on doing some kind of digital restoration on recordings that I love but are too scratchy, but I haven't figured out the best way to do that yet.

      I included it because it was on the original label but I don't know for sure why. Maybe the song was originally in Spanish or Portuguese (if thee are vocals which aren't included here). But I couldn't find sheet music so I don't know.

    Charles Harrison turned out so many great & well sung songs, must have been a prolific recorder. Not so easy to find here in the UK. To date I only have his rendition of 'Peggy O'Neill' on Regal.

    Mr. X was Arthur Fields on the Grey Gull label in 1922 and maybe 1923, but I don't know why.

      I just read about that! I posted another song credited to Arthur Baldwin and got a comment from someone who correctly recognized that the artist was actually Arthur Fields. So I looked into it and sure enough Arthur Fields went by a bunch of different names, including Arthur Baldwin and Mr. X. But according to this source ( secondhandsongs.com/artist/5736 ) other Grey Gull artists went by Mr. X as well. I have no idea why but it's fascinating!

      It's not terrible, but it could do with a bit of a clean up. If you can't re-record it, I say leave it up; in a screwy way, the imperfections add to the recording's charm....

I love a good scratchy record (It's in my name!) but there is a certain frequency that hurts my ears. I don't know how else to describe it, but this recording has it.

      I agree! FYI The laughing instrument you hear is an alto sax. If I were orchestrating, though, I think I'd use the trombone in one chorus for those responses. Your instinct is a good one!

    A very optimistic song, but the traditional ballad style would sound quite dated, with the 1920's approaching & songs like 'Pucker Up And Whistle' about to burst upon the scene.

      Yes, I know what you mean. I like the both the older songs and the 1920s songs because they evoke the eras they're from. They feel like time travel to me. But the 1920s songs are more vibrant and exciting. And less serious. And yes, 1919 is a bit late for this type of song. Sounds more like 1914 to me.

      It's my pleasure. I do tend to pick a lot of Irving Berlin songs. I know when I see his name as the writer that chances are it will be a great song, even if it's one I've never heard of before.
