A really interesting loco and long-lived. One appears in my father's early morning photo of Nottingham Victoria (taken from where Boots is now, on Upper Parliament Street). The photo you display looks like Chalfont and Latimer on the Met/GCR Joint, an area very familiar to me (I used to watch the GC line trains here up to the GC's end). The GC had, under Watkin, Continental loading gauge, concerned as he was with the South Eastern and a Channel Tunnel.

There was much controversary when Thompson took over as CME because he took, for his first A2, Gresley's pride and joy, 'Great Northern', the first A1 built under the aspicies of the GNR, and with it, Gresley's artistic eye for , especially, the front end of the loco.Thompson's insistence on a short connecting rod meant that the outside cylinders were set in the extended spacing to the rear of the leading bogie...something that was restored when A H Peppercorn produced his A2s.

As with the Great Bear, the rear (probably, if pivoting) Bissel/pony truck has inside bearings and would have been better with an outside bearing Cartazzi as on Gresley' A1. The boiler seems excessively long and was it superheated? I have read descriptions from 1920s Railway Magazines where it was employed out of Kings Cross, but can find no major criticisms of their capacity for steaming. I guess, as uou say, they were adequate but not capable of development as were the A1, into A3.

It's not the whole history. There is a lot that has been missed out. Remember, Great Northern was not a good engine and was due a rebuild anyway. It was an A1 and was to be changed to an A3. Both Great Northern locomotives were prototypes and the majority of the original was re-used after refurbishment at Doncaster. Thompson has been unnecessarily maligned through history. There was a war on and it was a case of make do and mend and also a move to easier access to running gear etc. due to the loss of highly trained personnel that were on war service.
