Future: Gearboxes!! especially integrated motor gearboxes!
did not hear him say 'CLEAR " before the start of the prop....
Stupid decision... Heavy engine in aircraft
Might have been OK if they could get 180 hp out of it!
2022. But the music is old!
What year did they make this video? 80s?
Great informative video thanx
Actually, Cessna stopped production of the 172 in 1986. Production resumed in Independence, Ks. in 1996 and continues there to this day. They also produced the 182 and 206 there.
To cool
Canada’s producing a V 12 Beaver airplane looks pretty nice
I saw a video of a cropduster (air tractor) severely modified to run a V12 diesel TRUCK engine. Running on Jet A, it was a real showpony, and could do a ballistic climb :)
Not a truck engine. Red V12 is made in Germany and no airplane is flying with a truck engines are cast iron. Engine swap is a major change and requires an STC from the FAA.
Pretty sure that was BMW v12 diesel
That uphill on the French bike was a damn good laugh. I needed that!
It would be cool to put Snow watermeth injection on it.
Great video for my deaf left ear
You need a better microphone my left ear got a workout.
The 6 popper is not less reliable that's a crazy statement.
Any Cessna-oligists out there know why they switched from the 6 cylinder Continental to the Lycoming 4? I recently flew a 1964 E model with the Continental. Nice plane!
Diesel engine isnt suitable for aircrafts
Diamond DA-40NG, DA-42 use them!
The 172S was not considered the XP. That title belongs to the R172K. It was literally marked as Hawk XP. It came from the factory with a 210hp motor derated to 195hp
What is Jet A1? Isn’t that a kerosene? Why are they not burning diesel in it if it’s a diesel engine?
Apparently diesel engines are not all that picky about fuel. If Jet A is available at your local airport, it burns just fine in a Diesel engine. Doesn't work so well in a conventional piston engine, though!
Turbo diesels..it’s about time…
Do you think in the near future, low-end to mid-end bicycles like MTB, road, touring, etc will be equipped with electronic groupsets?
Cost is coming down, market share is going up on both electronic groupsets and hydraulic disc brakes! The only downside is having to remember to "charge" your bike!
@@grafhilgenhurst9717 I hope I can buy a cheap MTB with electronic groupsets in the next few years. but I think E-Groupset will only get cheaper when it is mass produced in China
@@tranhai8895 I have a mountain bike with a 1 x 11 drivetrain. Not electronic, but it's a "no-brainer" when on a twisty trail!
Is the electronic groupset/shifter the new standard for Tour De France road bikes?
It is. I have 1 bike with electronic shifting. It never misses a shift, like the double clutch transmission in cars, which was also adopted in racing.
People still thinks that 3x7/9 is the true geared bike and 1x12 system are just a hype, nonsense, 1x12 is the real deal 😂😂😂
Who invented the front derailleur?
The Simplex Competition front derailleur was introduced in 1949, and was operated by hand using a lever that extended upward parallel to the seat tube.In 1952 the company introduced a cable-operated model. I had Simplex derailleurs on my Raleigh Gran Prix!
@@grafhilgenhurst9717 thank you so much ❤
I wish Cessna was still making "affordable" new aircraft...
Actually, Cessna began production of the 172 in Independence, Ks. in '96
Just to be accurate it is "injectors instead of spark plugs" the glow plugs are more analogous to a choke for cold starting. Rudolf Diesel Invented timed injection. He did not invent high compression...
Did the first 20-25 hours of my PPL in Red Birds 101-103 ...I didn't know how amazing that fuel burn was until started flying standard 172's.
Just flew one of them at KJWN. Easy run-up, very quiet and smooth.
some of the mercedes diesels can make a lot of power when modified. Wonder if they could get the om606 3.0 6 cylinder turbo diesel to work with it.
Might be a bit heavy. Great engine, though!
@@grafhilgenhurst9717 I don't know much about planes but would additional power make up for a little more weight? I cant find the weight of the om604 4 cylinder, I know the om606 6 cylinder weighs around 490 lbs. 4 cylinder is like 90hp stock while the om606 is making 190hp and can take 600hp+ on stock internals with a few small mods and a bigger turbo + injection pump. I know the 4 cylinders have also been modified I don't know how much they can make off the top of my head though. I'm assuming theres gotta be some rules to engine modifications though. Im surprised diesel planes didnt catch on, they can be extremely reliable and not needing to adjust fuel sounds, easier to turbo charge.
I suspect the 6 cylinder would be too heavy in the nose of a Cessna. If only they got 180 hp from the 4 cylinder, it would be competitive with the current Lycoming. @@lemons3738
Not enough climb rate. Need more power.
Built for fuel savings. If you can afford a plane, you can probably afford the fuel.
100LL $2.86 / litre canadian at London Ontario. good airshow in september thanks to our southern neighbors . cars gas S1.69/litre more/less nice combine video there Matt.... 🐐
5 speed suntour is where I came in, now on 12 speed Campagnolo.
In those days I thought Suntour beat Shimano. How is Campy 12? I have a Campy 10 that I love!
@@grafhilgenhurst9717 I don't really remember shimano being around back then (mid to late 80s} I went to campagnolo in 92 and been on campag ever since. Recently bought the 12 speed Chorus groupo, brilliant, typical bomb proof Campag.
Shimano and Suntour were neck and neck in those days. I preferred Suntour (and way better than Simplex!). Then Shimano got a patent for the swinging parallelogram design that pretty much was the end of Suntour. @@alistair410
Just a little addition to fill in the gaps. In the 1950s was the Oscar Egg, Osgear with a spring loaded chain roller running on the bottom chain line taking up the slack over 3 sprockets. In the 1960s we were blessed in the U K with the Benelux horizontal spring action using down tube control lever and manual lever on seat post to change 2 front gears, turn it left/ right to select. Ray Booty in 1950s set national 100 mile record 3 hrs 32 mins using heavy Sturmy Archer 3 speed close ratio gear ! Then in the 60s came the 3/32 inch width lighter flexible chain we use today. Thus ending the racing on fixed gear for time trials as was then established practice in the U K . It became possible to to race 6 speed and more, breaking away from the limiting 5 speed of the 1/8 inch standard chain width previously only available. Chain pitch is still universally and W- Wide 1/2 imperial inch. The rest is history, you all are experiencing now. Thank you for a fascinating video particularly the back pedalling gear change of the French design ! Who else ?
Thank you, sir! Chains keep getting narrower. And more expensive!
I need to purchase me a Brompton
i It's a real joy to ride!
Wow this video is amazing lol good job
There’s so many hilariously stupid designs in the past… would love to see a much longer video on those.
Oh, and this doesn't dump lead from the aviation gasoline into the air, right?
No lead in Jet A, to the best of my knowledge. That's why you can't burn it in most piston engines. Not enough Octane rating.
He is like Michael Jackson of cycles
Thank you.
The ferrari comparison is absolute nonsense, specially considering it's a double clutch transmission, not even motorcycles use those.
OK, I WISH I were driving a Ferrari, but it shifts by clicking your fingers and letting the electronics do the rest. That much is true.
@@grafhilgenhurst9717 but you are pressing a button with mechanical shifters as well, idk, I felt it was kind of beyond the point. Maybe if some day an electronic -internal gears transmission for bikes appears and then it'll be more safe to call it a bike dct
It always struck me as odd that Japan, with no history of cycling to speak of, is the world leader in derailleur gearing. Proves the industrious nature of the Japanese.
No history of cycling?! Many brands from Japan were old before they became international exporters!
It was always said that Shimano wears out, Campagnolo wears in.
Not for the price. I'll still roll with shimano. It's like a honda... it just works and you can find them everywhere.
The only problem with the Retro Direct is that if you pedal backwards for any distance, the pedals will unscrew and fall off - ! 😅 An odd oversight for a great idea.
Never had that problem in the 2 miles I rode it. I did have the pedals fall off a unicycle once, after I'd been riding it for 5 miles. Turns out I was riding it backwards the whole way! 🤣
Moonwalking uphill had me creasing 😂

my flight school air harmony flies about 6 of these and I love them especially the throttle. Its a little bit different in the normal 172 layout but it flies so smooth, would def reccomend this aircraft!
If I could offer some feedback on this old video: Its absolutely fantastic, I mean, genuinely great video. The only part I could suggest you improve are the thumbnail and title. They arent appealing enough and "A history of gears" doesnt really convey what the content of the video will be. For better of for worse, good and appealing thumbnails are the mark of a successfull youtube video.
Thank you for the feedback. This was originally done for an exhibit at the Lane Motor Museum called "bicycles through the years", so you are getting it a little bit out of context.
Thank you so much for the awesome video! I'm about to starting training to get my PPL in Washington, and they offer the 162 and the 172 as options. The 172 is far more expensive, so I don't want to choose that, but the 162 is such a rare plane with some people claiming it's not a good plane that I have some concerns about flying it. This video made me feel a lot better about it. Thank you :)
It's a great plane, you will love it!
Reminds me of my 63 VW Bug….
