Bioware's DRAGON AGE: What Went Wrong?
With Dragon Age: The Veilguard approaching soon, I took a look at Bioware's rich history, and found a couple of striking similarities to the older games in the franchise. But not in the way you'd expect...

    What happened? They hired people that no longer wanted to make games for an audience... but for themselves. Just look at the narcissistic people investing every hobby nowadays. All they ever talk about is how they made the IP "Their own" and how they allways wanted to see themselves "represented" in these games and now finaly got what they wanted. These freaks arent interested in anything but themselves. Thats why so many of these "diverse and inclusive" games are utter garbage.. cause they are made for no one except the game director and their in company clique of chosen ones.

    DAMN YOU FOR MAKING THIS BEFORE ME. It's great and spot on. I think your faith is misplaced. I think Bioware has lost to much of it's talent to make Vielguard a win. I will gladly be wrong. But don't think I will be. Still a great video.

    Larian has claimed the rpg throne. Bioware can't compete for it and I sincerely hope they won't even try. I want them to rise from the ashes with fresh ideas and a new style that will characterise them for the next decade. Larian is my GOAT now, but I will still keep my eye on Bioware, for old times sake.

    DA2 was the last game that Bioware broke after. This game was so bad that I couldn't believe my eyes in 2011. Horrible story, horrible characters, horrible writing, horrible locations (like the basement of a house can be 10 times bigger than the house itself, makes sense), horrible combat system, evil red stone plot, flying woman as the final boss like in a shitty comic book. It's just garbage. Dragon Age 2 is garbage.

  • @BiriBiri925
    @BiriBiri925 3 дня назад

    The main problem is that DAO started being made long before EA bought Bioware. Several years before that. So when EA got the studio in their hands, DAO was already deep in development, Bioware made that game the way they wanted it with the help of EA money who didn't interfere with the process. But none of that applies to DA2 and subsequent games. Not to mention that the people who created DAO are long gone from Bioware.

    29:30 I strongly disagree. I was a huge Baldur's Gate 1 and 2 fan, actually best game I have ever played, before and after, but I LOVED that Dragon Age origins trailer with "this is the new sh" music - actually fitted superb into the mood - the game itself was also amazing - while 2 was boring, 3 wwas less boring but still boring, and 4 now looks like made for someone else, not me, who like good game and zero grinding or real life politics in it.

    I played Origins. It felt like an ever descending stair to a final fate. I wasn't wrong. Afterwards I added mods for character models, and used what I learned from the first time to play a different way and eventually finished again. I've not felt the desire to return to that depressing world since. Even The Witcher 3 feels like a day in paradise compared to the story tone. All the disappointment in the sequels validated my choice to move on. But then EA earned a reputation I could no longer support and feel dirty years later for trying the Star Wars games with Ginger Jedi and Angst ridden pilot. I won't be back.

    The Lead Designer on DA:Origins was Brent Knowles. Laidlaw was brought in when the game was finished for the port to consoles and Knowles left because he didn't like the direction for DA2. Quite the fan of DA2 despite its issues, i really wish it had had been given a reasonable development time to allow for better environments. But the smaller scale combined with time skips where you see the long term consequences of your choices is great. I have my doubts about Veilguard and certainly won't pre-order it in a million years but I'm willing to give it a chance and see what people are saying after release. I have heard some good things from creators who were able to play some of it at events particularly about the fact that there are player choices that carry heavy consequences for your companions. However, it'll be hard for me to get over my dislike of the aesthetic, it all seems like over-the-top high fantasy with floating buildings and giant glowing portals which is a big departure from the fairly gritty and grounded setting of Origins and 2. The models have weird cartoony proportions with big heads and the colour palette is very disney/marvel and i don't just mean the attack animations but the whole UI itself is bright and cluttered and immersion breaking :/ But, i really do like the franchise and it's lore, i've even played the TTRPG, so hopefully the writing is good enough to get passed all that, and maybe there will be mods to tone it down a bit eventually too?

    Nothing went wrong. They made four drastically different games that were the expression and product of the time the studio delivered them. The main component, though, was always the story, which I would argue has been excellent in all three previous games and seems exciting in the next one as well.

    Man DA2 was really special despite their circumstances. I'd argue the companions were the best of the 3. Even Origins. The story was great for its smaller scope (maybe that helped). Not as epic as 1 but alot of really memorable moments.

    I loved Dragon Age, both 1 and 2. The sequel had its issues, to be sure, but that was mostly in the reused locations. In terms of gameplay, a simple fight against a pair of ogres became one of the most memorable experiences I've had in all my years of gaming. If they released a new game like either of these two, it would make me very happy. Unfortunately, I've seen the glory of Mass Effect get subverted into ME2, and continued its decline into ME3. I gave up on Inquisition after discovering it was a single-player MMO, and not in the way SWTOR should have been. When I gave Anthem a chance, it turned out to be even worse than expected. These days, the name Bioware does not inspire confidence. If they announced a Jade Empire 2, I would be devastated by the horrors we would inevitably see. So I can't see any hope whatsoever for DA4. As a best case scenario, it would be Dragon Age Andromeda. Insufferable characters, nonsensical story, atrocious worldbuilding with no regard for the setting... and gameplay mechanics that I can't call good, but that are strangely compelling. Unfortunately, everything I've seen implies this will be Inquisition 2 instead. When the benchmarks for quality are the worst Mass Effect game and the worst Dragon Age game, both of which are part of the series in name only, I can't agree with your optimism. I hope we get something halfway decent, but at this point I'd be just as happy if the entity calling itself Bioware finally got the EA treatment. They had a good run, and deserve to rest in peace.

    ME is peak videogaming, even in your face problems are overshadowed by the tv-show-like presented characters, worldbuilding & storytelling + movie-like spectacle presentation. There is no ME:A, and even if there was an soulless abomination like that, it would be a glorious erectile dysfunction. DA:O was good, for the bigger part, but that story should've been a trilogy as well, and I realy hate it when your character is an empty shell that doesn't even talk. I mean, ME did this so much better, even the 1st one aged like fine wine, so to speak. The sequels were fine to meh, both at the same time. It didn't impress me in the slightest, that's just how I see it.

    Bioware used to be my favorite game company for many years up until about 10 years ago. That's why I was so happy that Baldurs Gate 3 got so much success. It shows that games like Dragon Age Origins and Baldurs Gate can appeal to the mainstream without sacrificing that crpg identity. I don't mean to sound negative but in my mind Bioware has already been dethroned and I'm waiting excitedly for Larian's next release. Also as a side note the Boogie clips were hilarious lol.

    Every Dragon Age feels like a entirely new game and not a sequel, that's the problem. There's no unique traits to the series, because every fricking game they change the art style, the combat, etc. They say it's to appeal to the modern audience, but who is this audience? If we ever get another game after Veilguard they will probably change everything else again instead of improving and making things consistent. I honestly wouldn't recommend this series for none of my friends, because there's no quality control and every game is a different things.

    Some good points throughout the video, especially towards the first half, sadly it seems that no matter how hard I look I can't find somebody that thinks DA2 was good and that isn't just completely wrong from there on out. The upcoming installment has nothing of what the roots of the series held, DA:I was actually the closest they got since the very beginning and even that was a weird mess of ideas that felt like some corpo stuck his nose into the wrong meetings. While I and many others can't put our fingers on it cause the game isn't out, it is clear that this emanates really bad vibes, we can feel that there's something rotten behind all the veneer of "oooh look at this oooh look at that". The combat is dumbed-down and mediocre, new age console kiddies would probably love it, the designs of the characters and the weird things the community pages are focusing on are also red flags (articles like "here's why every character being pansexual is integral to the plot"), this game doesn't have the same direction the original had, it feels like it is made by some random vogue writers. I still remember vividly going through the deep roads and being relayed to what those poor dwarven women who were captured went through, we're never getting chilling stuff like that again, not from disney's marvel's defenders of the veil™ And if this is what Dragon Age is going to be, if this is what I have to endure seeing in the future, let it die and be forgotten, let it rust away and become dust, the first one looks to be the only one worth remembering.

      I like video games and think it's the best medium out there. Sometimes they get ruined by desperate real life inserts or talentless, activist writing. Dragon Age Origins however, was a beautiful game written by a gay man, featuring a foreign bi assassin, while its most powerful companions were women. It embraced inclusivity, and working together, regardless of race, religion, political preference, or gender, to overcome a bigger threat. That's what the entire story was about. Progressiveness has always been at the heart and center of the franchise, for better or for worse. To fault The Veilguard for doing the same, doesn't seem right. Yes, that first trailer was dumb. Yes, the art style is vastly different, like every entry. Yes, the enemy design is less grim. Yes, the game has more color than ever before. Yes, they once again changed the combat system. Baldur's Gate 3 did all of these things as well, and was (rightfully) applauded for it. Not saying you're doing this, but a lot of people are loud, angry and think they're proving a point, but they're doing the exact opposite. It's the Hogwarts Legacy boycot nonsense all over again, but this time in reverse. It's woke, so it's automatically bad, without looking at its history, or even trying it. That's such a shame. I miss the early 2000's, when games were just games and we played them for what they were.

    • @cristiancojocaru9821
      @cristiancojocaru9821 9 дней назад

      @@LockPlays Oh wow, was not expecting a response to this but let me clear a few things up cause you seem to have gone on a bit of an unrelated tangent. I personally, and I'd venture to say the vast majority of people who aren't hyped for the next installment, do not care about who the writer/ artist/ director/ janitor bags at the end of the day, you can not pay me enough to care, as long as it is consensual and legal, they can bring in fireworks and clowns for all I care. Secondly, not sure why the idea of "the old game was focused on inclusivity" as if that refutes anything I said, yes it is about everyone working together to stop evil invaders and all that good stuff, nobody had an issue with that even then, or if they did I certainly have yet to hear about it or meet 1 person who holds that opinion. Even if I would accept your argument that "it was always progressive" you need to understand that that statement in itself means wildly different things between then and now, that is to say your argument refutes itself, and the sad part is you didn't even need to make it because it has nothing to do with what I was saying. With all due respect, I think you misunderstood me quite badly and I'm sorry I had to be so blunt in my rejection of these arguments that would paint me as holding a position I do not actually hold. To clarify: My position is on the atmosphere, the love-letter to crpg lovers of old-school rpgs from the 2000's, the serious and in-depth mechanics (compared to nowadays at least), not this easy-to-digest wider audience mild stuff. I took the missus and showed her the cover art for the game and asked her to tell me what she thinks the game's vibe is, and she literally said "marvel". You don't need to have a doctorate in what makes a good RPG to feel what this game is intended to be. As I said, I'm sure we'll see more in the future and especially once it releases and then we can have more proper arguments, right now it's a bit early to say anything conclusive either way.
