    Any suggestions for a crapped out AM tuner? No idea what happened, it just stopped working. Antenna is intact.

    • @TrevorsBench
      @TrevorsBench День назад

      Is it completely dead or just doesn't pick up signals? If it's completely dead then check the power supply. If it's passing signals or noise it could be faulty antenna and it's wires or shorted tuning capacitor. Outside of that, you'll need test equipment to see if the local oscillator is working and if the IF is passing signals

      @@TrevorsBench thanks for replying so quickly! I would say completely dead but I can sometimes hear very faint white noise / crackling coming from it as I roll through the dial but not necessarily when I pass by where a signal should definitely be.

    Is there an advantage to hot checking the outputs vs diode check? I took some heat shrink on my probe tips and trimmed off just enough for the tip, with my shaky hand I have slipped and damaged. I have a gaggle of old Fisher stereos, I prefer this over the AV, which typically need a unobtainium DSP chip anyway. You can count on cracked solder on those older Fishers units, they used cheap solder I think.

    I had problems with the remote for mine. Bought a remote rebuild kit, replacing the rubber pads inside. It worked!!!! For about a month 😢

    • @TrevorsBench
      @TrevorsBench 4 дня назад

      Yeah, it's a temporary fix. You don't need the kit. Just disassemble and clean all the rubber pads and their corresponding pad on the circuit board with alcohol, 99% IPA works. This alone will buy you another month of use. The oils from your skin absorb into the silicone rubber buttons and works it way through to the contacts. The layer of oil is why it stops working. This reminds me, the wife's been nagging me to fix the remote again

    From what i have gathered over many years of owning NADs the early ones (e.g. 3020, 3130) have the best sound and build quality, they will still need servicing and recapping to get the best from them obviously, i generally go for the ones with phono input and banana plug speaker terminals. all still sound very detailed with sweet treble, good bass and punchy sound.

    Hi there, that was a great video. I have a unit exactly like that but I have a different kind of problem with it; when I press the switch on, I can see only those tiny LEDs on both sides of the panel on, but no display. The relay from main power source doesn't click either. The good news is that all fuses from power source and amplifier board are all ok. So, would you have a clue where the problem may be? Thank you so much for any imput and I appreciate your attention.

    These crummy auto reverse mechanisms are nothing but a pain. They always end like this. I would never buy one for this reason and the fact that they offer poor quality sound, I mean the heads physically rotate leading to azimuth alignment issues. I have recently picked up my AKAI again and am enjoying cassettes once again. I wouldn't ever buy an auto reverse deck even if were a NAKAMICHI. Just too much to go wrong. I'll flip my tapes myself.

    Thanks for showing this failure as a warning to others. I've got an Onkyo PR-5508 pre-pro with the same chip exhibiting the same problem. I bought it new from an on-line retailer at a massive discount years ago and now I know why. I've been simply doing the heat treatment to the chip every year or so to keep it running, but considered replacing the chip for a permanent fix. This shows I would probably end up with a boat anchor if I tried to replace the chip. I guess it's not that big a deal to heat-treat the chip once a year since the unit gives ample warning and ability to use it as the problem creeps back. It's not like I have to cross my fingers every time I turn it on. It's either the annual heat treatments or pay $2k for a comparable pre-pro. I opt for the former as I'm really not that into music and home theater anymore to put another dime into my sound system.

    Hey Trevor, I have and occasionally use a DX-160. With a nice piece of copper in the air, it does ok. I ain’t been inside it yet except to poke around and my SDR runs circles around it of course but, there is something about the twiddling of knobs and skimming the bandwidth that keeps the old set alluring. Thanks for the tidbits. I’ll put them to good use someday.

I never knew that something so complicated could be stripped down so thoroughly and successfully repaired and work like new. I'm not sure what exactly is happening however here's my .02 worth... It seems to me the replacement DSP chip was nothing more than a blank. Meaning: It's the right chip part number but does not have the internal firmware specific to that make and model of receiver. The firmware is subject to a licensing agreement between the chip maker, Dolby and other digital audio companies, and the receiver manufacturer. As such it's not something readily available to the public. Trying to get the firmware and get the receiver working as it once upon a time did would be quite difficult and probably way beyond the budget of most electronics enthusiasts. The time and resource investment would be huge. I've been working on trying to bring these old beasts back to life and it's just beyond my patience and resources. However all is not lost. What I've seen: The schematics for these receivers is available for free online if you search long and hard enough. When the DSP goes so does the volume level for the main and possibly the zones. The video input, output, and video up scaling is gone. Any kind of on screen display in composite, S-Video, or RGB video is also lost. Without the DSP what you're left with is a fancy analog audio switchbox and however many power amplifier channels the receiver came with. The amplifier channels are not that robust and my opinion is to scrap them for amp parts to the end of building something much more reliable. Yank the HDMI board. Throw it away. You will thank me later. Some of these receivers run without the HDMI board behaving the same as yours currently does. Some require restoring lost pass through signals from other boards and the most notable loss was the ground connection. The schematic is your friend in hunting down what's lost. Some have serial ports or the capacity to add a serial port capable of talking to a PC. This opens up all kinds of possibilities limited only by your imagination and usage of resources at your disposal.

    Hi Trevor, I suspect that these large plastic wheels for the tuning have shrank. It seems it is made of that same plastic you sometimes find cast around steel axes, and there the plastic shrinks and then breaks because the steel is not shrinking with it. That would explain why the springs for the dial cords were flat out, and why the tracking was often off. And for the hum, I think I noticed that it was 50Hz (or 60), not 100Hz (or 120) on your scope ? And when I heard it the first time it also reminded me of a hum caused by a short, so my thought was that one of the diodes or caps parallel to them is bad. Still, you removing that one cap in the power supply made it really work a lot better, so.... I am in doubt. Nice receiver....
