Drowning in the Complexity of ISTDP? Hang on to this One Thread
In this video, I try to demystify the complexities of ISTDP and emphasize the importance of staying focused on one primary thread: the depth of connection with the patient. While acknowledging the many moving parts and assessments therapists must juggle-such as anxiety analysis, defense mechanisms, and the central dynamic sequence-I highlights that the ultimate aim is to access the patient’s most intimate thoughts and feelings. This access forms the foundation of meaningful therapeutic work and should serve as the guiding North Star for therapists. By continually assessing what might be impeding this connection, whether from the patient, therapist, or both, therapists can remain attuned a...

From Clues to Clarity: How Inductive Thinking Shapes Psychotherapy
Просмотров 1233 месяца назад
In this video, we dive into the importance of inductive reasoning in psychotherapy and supervision. Inductive reasoning is a crucial cognitive process that therapists and supervisors use to make sense of the often complex and ambiguous information patients present in therapy. It’s not just about intuition or relying on pre-existing knowledge-it’s about gathering clues from incomplete data, form...

Rethinking ADHD: A Critical Examination of Its Validity and Alternatives
Просмотров 6273 месяца назад
In this video, I challenge the traditional view of ADHD as a purely neurological disorder, exploring the possibility that behaviors commonly associated with ADHD may actually stem from deeper psychological or environmental issues. I delve into the core debate: Is ADHD truly a distinct disorder, or could it be better explained by other factors like anxiety? By examining the lack of unique biolog...
The Pulling out the Rug Defense: Intimacy Undermined
Просмотров 3493 месяца назад
In this video I discuss the defense of "pulling out the rug from underneath" which is where there is real emotional closeness that gets undermined by the patient second guessing the reality of what just transpired. I discuss how we can try to differentiate this defense from the reality of a patient honestly reflecting on that they really were compliant and performative, and the previous episode...

Love this! Very helpful. Thanks for posting. By the way, are you doing all the voices?
Thanks! Yes I think I did them all, though I believe in one of these animated ones my better half helped out with a female voice.
@@LearningForPsychotherapists Very well done!
While I can agree on Bernardo's idealism, I think he trivializes how easy it is to get rid of psychological problems using this paradigm of "I am nature, and my personal ego doesn't matter". In some other video he says that he is in general neurotic, and has had anxiety and that this paradigm shift has helped him tame his neuroticism. While I think that philosophically this paradigm is valid, using it in terms of relieving anxiety and battling neuroticism is just cope. And I also think that psychotherapy, where we value the individual and Bernardo's philosophy where we are one, and there is no personal are not mutually exclusive, and can actually work together. Because if we don't deal with let's say childhood trauma in a serious way, where we value our own individual self, we cannot really find philosophical truth through ourselves. It will be blocked with tremendous amount of defense mechanisms, biases, learned helplessness etc. Even though these can be described as the word EGO, using solely the intellect, just rationalizing that ego is an illusion, won't get rid of these problems.
And I don't really get why can't an individual self originate from the one and only consciousness and be a part of it. He says that we are only dissociation of nature so we don't matter. But if I am a dissociation, a part of nature, that he values so much, doesn't that mean that there is value in me, so that I actually matter? I think at this point it's just a discussion about wording, and to me, strangely it seems like a weird aversion to not use the term individual self, and to use the word dissociation, seems really, REALLY arbitrary to me. Can't help but to think this is a coping mechanism
That invalite move is also extremely importent❤
Nyaya sutra discusses time & space in the Veda’s of a broken twig falling from a tree. If we catch it mid way : that which has already fallen & that which is yet to fall: ie past & future. Between these 2 there is no present. If present doesn’t exist we cannot define past not can we define future. All tenses are gone.
Great interviewer! This is the first interview to Bernardo I watch where he’s asked about his ties with Brasil
I think I have never seen or listened to such a well structured and clear description of a therapist's work focusing on a particular case. Thank you a lot, Johannes! It was brilliant, I listened to it twice
The best interview with BK that I've come across.
👍🏼
This is one of the best podcast featuring Bernardo
Wow, this presentation is so clarifying! The idea that genuine collaboration is on the bottom of the triangle clears up a lot for me. The way you work with the client to experientially connect with the therapeutic task in order to build the alliance is something I'm trying to become more skilled with. Thanks for all these videos!
Great! Really glad it was helpful
this is one of the most insightful BK interviews i have seen. I appreciate your challenging of his ideas Johannes, especially from the perspective of a professional psychologist. It is a wonderful dialogue.
I love this interview. Thank you so much🌹🙏
It is the third time i am listening to this high quality conversation IT makes me soo glad the tune of honesty ...the sounds of truth and wisdom .. philosophy, ontology and reality that I can be a part of .

Two fine guys, so deep, so familiar, thanks a lot for sharing🙏🙏🙏
An astonishing interview; thank you two so very much!
this is one of the best interviews i've heard for Bernardo! amazing pushback and questions, it's so nice to hear more about his past and childhood
It’s humbling to listen to that rare phenomenon of an intellectual giant who is so candid, open hearted and authentic. I marvel at how Kastrup shares so much fascinating detail about the roots of his philosophy in childhood. 🫶

The only "reality" we can know about is the process of fishing but not the Fischer.
"fish" not Fischer", autocorrection gone wrong.
This is such a great, informative video. Thank you for your generosity in sharing your expertise.
Bernado is ably to formulate the “unspeakable.”
This is hands down the best interview done with Bernardo Kastrup because the interviewer challenged him again and again and even explored his personal backstory. I was impressed by that and by the fact that Bernardo never lost consistency, never appeared to be mentally fabricating in order to fill or defend gaps he’d never thought of, and even explained important context for each of his responses. My confidence in Bernardo as a credible philosopher is 100 percent after watching this. He is fully aware of what he knows, why he knows it, what its purpose is, and within what environment it plays out. You rarely find such air tight logic. Even with most scientists or critical theorists, they are often blind to the unexamined assumptions their theories are shakily standing on. I’m just very impressed with Bernardo and the interviewer after this.
2:09:00 I do believe the interviewer is misrepresenting Buddhism but he is not making that interpretation up. Most Buddhists treat the nonself teaching as a position, which it is not. It is a perceptual tool aimed at dis-identifying with all that we are not. Bernardo’s interpretation after was pretty awesome too
44:00 beautiful explanation
This is one of my favourite talks with BC. It makes me "understand" his philosophy deeper. And why the Netherlands never can win the WC in football. Witch (paradoxically, as a swede) was one of my major traumas in the seventies. WC -74 is forever there as a reminder.
👏👏👏 This kind of thoughtful rationale is sadly, shocking in todays day and age.
This is my favorite Kastrup interview, and I have watched a lot because he is really intelligent; and it's my favorite because you have gently pressed him on the way his analytic idealistic philosophy can be misconstrued. And in the Jungian spirit, this really helped round out his philosophical points with the subtleties necessary to show in essence his philosophy in heart and spirit, without killing the mystery still inside the core of the matter. Because of your interview, the lingering questions I had about Bernardo's perspective, were carefully addressed in a really beautiful way. Kastrup is so important for check-mating the game as it is, I only wonder now how we can begin to talk about the archetypes of personal experience, to begin to open the mystery within, so that the world as a whole is enlivened with a Hillman soul... and can that be done in harmony with our rational appreciation?
We are individual manifestations of the same consciousness - like an artist creates a painting. Like a mother and her child. A God and its Progeny. "I formed you before you were in your mothers womb." Thank you, gentlemen, for this wonderful discussion.
I experience presence of self or consciousness in silence between words, between letters and between thoughts
I watched this 2 years ago and just rewatched it. I do very much appreciate the wisdom and insight I personally gained from this video to help me to better understand Ego and my true self. Thank you for all the time and deep insights.
Famous people are always at risk. We must protect Bernardo Kastrup from the John Hinckley Jr.'s, Michael Abram's, etc... No doubt many religious fanaticals would love to shut Bernardo up or punish him for rejecting their truths.
These ideas can apply to many systems and situations.
I find that the fullness of nothing becomes rather palpable when you sit alone in silence and darkness after watching a scary movie. Its not nothing, its full potential.
I wish philosophers and physicists and psychologists and psychiatrists had a sixth sense. All of this is a man using his 'brain'. If he had a 6th sense and experience many metaphysical things, which are beyond the body, he would understand more, understand like Christ, or Buddha or clairvoyants, or highly sensitive people, somewhat like Carl Yung. If all he's going to do is bang his brain, he's never going to understand deeply and rapidly.
Also a conversation between you and Neil Theise The Complexity Theory ❤ Which in my understanding is describing how nature works in a way that believe aligns with your philosophy in a beautiful way.
I would love to hear a conversation with You and Amit Goswami - Indian physicist Who out of his scientific expertise and his culture have come to describe much of what you're saying. . I'd like to hear you both talk about purpose and evolution.
Great video thanks a million. Only thing is the French pronunciation of resistance gets a bit irritating after while.
Great feedback, thanks! I obviously got carried away.
No problem and sorry to provide negative feedback. I think it might partly because the French pronunciation is more from WW2 resistance rather than Freud (who was of course not French). So it feels wrong to put it across as French. Maybe I’m mistaken about this but it would prob be less of an issue of the German (or Freud’s original word) was used. Apparently Widerstand was the word which means to stand contrary.
I totally agree. I was obviously in a whimsical mood 🤷♂️😬
@@LearningForPsychotherapists its all good I’m probably the only person who noticed
Sometimes I wonder. Could instinctual nature (which Bernado so insightfully coins 'core subjectively') be driven to awaken meta-consciousness in diverse dissociated identities (substances and species) in order to free itself from the limitations of primordial instincts? E.G. Often when I become conscious of reacting in an impulsive potentially destructive manner, Ive been able to consider and neurally reprogram alternative neural pathways that help me avoid the same automatic re-action repeating again choicelessly. Could metacognition release/free conscious intelligence from its present creative limits? Must Sapien Alters forever remain slaves to primal instinctual reactions? Can we use a mental thorn to take out a mental thorn?
I could listen to Bernardo and Johannes all day while creating in my workroom. This freedom of thought is much more delightful and inspiring than the narrow repetitious mental programs of our ancient conditioning.
That's called a baby Mobile.

3:05:52 "My latin fiancé says ... why bother with all this philosophy, just eat your sandwich and listen music.." ... Come on Johannes, are you that thick ??? The codeword is "LATIN" ... she is very likely brought up in a religious (catholic) environment and therefore she does NOT want you to think about anything that can challenge that bullshit, mental child-abuse, since she will have to leave you to stay with the bullshit, as it is associated with matriarchal power. BK is living in his fantasy of humans not having free will so "they are just expressing whatever the "mind at large" is doing at the moment". Here we have two supposedly "smart" philosophers/psychiatrists and they cannot see the forest for the trees
2:21:33 ".. nothing ever happens" ... except off course if you deconstruct BKs philosophy on your youtube channel, he considers it an event and he is going to threaten you with another event, "in the future", called government violence
Soon as he said that trump was a racist, i turned the idiot off! Cojldn't take him serious nomore!!
For years and years I struggled with the whole “love yourself” until I arrived at this exact realization. To love the life inside of me that was granted by nature. Everything changed.

Yes Im beginning to discover that Loving myself is key to happiness.
@@kaydurbin8497 Absolutely. I no longer struggle with the concept of loving myself because I simply understand I am part of nature, that the life inside me is Life itself. I do struggle with my egoic self or rather memories of how I lived before I realized I was a narcissistic a-hole but... the more I surrender to life as it is, the easier my own life becomes.
Just when I thought I had already heard the best BK interview on RUclips, I came across this! Really good stuff. Great questions and dialogue. Thank you.
Jesus said you need to love your neighbor as yourself. In order to do this you must be a PURE INDIVIDUAL -- right now people love according to blood lines and communities. This is a collective type of love and that is not a pure love - it has an obligation a tie. To love purely you have to love without obligation or owing or needing or depending ---- that is WHY THE INDIVIDUAL IS SO IMPORTANT. And if you look at Western Culture which is built on the back of Christianity you see the Elevation of the INDIVIDUAL and the importance of the INDIVIDUAL over the collective. Other cultures are not like this --- not Eastern, Hindu or indigenous. This is why JESUS CHRIST is the WAY and the ONLY WAY. I am starting to have doubts in Bernardo and his true intention. I suggest everyone read Rudolf Steiner and Owen Barfield.
Self driving is the pulse of the universe itself and how much we have in common with the universe itself is enough for me and as I call upon the depth of the typhon of information about how the system works for all living formations of memory of the dynamic thing called thinking of I am you are isolating yourself from the Alienation of the world itself wasn't designed to be alienated from yourself or anything else but politically motivated bastards who use it too dividing the world between worlds is a criminal offense too the whole world and the universe itself are we entangled in a looping of the wars they have created in a way to concur destroying life and retirement age in one fell swooping motion
