This is the second video of my practice ifr flight. This video continues right after I Landed and taxied back to get my clearance. You will see a full route clearance given from a class D airport with a control tower. Also you can see how IFR and VFR traffic interact at larger airports. This was one of my first flights with a real IFR flight plan flown by myself after my checkride. I made a few...
Flying the VOR-A approach into Trenton airport

Here is a video of my first real IFR approach after passing my checkride a few years back. The weather was not true ifr but there were enough clouds around to get some actual IMC. New IFR pilots or Students can really see how an approach is flown in the real world. As you can see if you are prepared and stay ahead of the airplane the approach can be quite easy and fun. Im sure I made some small...

Got my Hunsan H107D quadcopter a few days ago and I must say, im impressed. Today i had the guts to finally bring it outside for a quick flight...Its tiny but fun to fly. A little breezy today I would say I flew it to about 150 feet high this time and got a little nervous because you can no longer see or hear it when its up that high. More Vids to come. Def a fun little toy and this makes me wa...

Departing IFR from Princeton NJ (39n). Had to call the 1800 number for NY Departure. This airport is in a tough area for communications at low altitudes so you will hear what happens when an airliner overhead has to relay the message from ATC on my departure. Thanks again JetBlue 544!!! Also Another aircraft has an engine failure on final and blocks the runway for a few minutes, I almost had to...
Flying IFR (good for pilots training for IFR)

Took a short IFR flight for practice from my airport 3n6 to Princeton Airport 39n. Weather wasn't serious IFR but just enough to get some actual and some good practice flying. This video will give a good understanding to pilots training for IFR. You can see how the system really works in busy NYC airspace or any busy airspace around the country. You can hear me call for my clearance using my ai...

Solid IMC and rain during cruise flight
Просмотров 53311 лет назад
On my flight back to NJ (3n6) from Canada last week, we encountered some pretty good IMC conditions over southern Vermont. My NEXRAD on my GPS was showing some bands of moderate rain across our route and confirmed with ATC, this was what we encountered. At one point our ground speed was showing 75 kts as we crossed through the warm front. We had smoothe ride thru all of this. I ended up not out...

u know i am looking for this video! thank you for sharing!!!!
Is Trih-in closuh ta da fau-ins, ah da mau-ins?
what?? is this english?
Yikes. Two minutes void time? That's harsh. I've had five many times but not two. And normally, you'd read back the time and the altimeter, but with a two-minute void time, screw that. I would have done exactly what you did; give them the absolute minimum acceptable readback so that you can switch over to CTAF and get going.
gevmage yea. That’s the usual out of this airport. It’s possible it’s like this because of the busy airspace that my airport is in. (EWR mode c ring)The airliners are on final for RWY 4 L+R at EWR directly over my airport so maybe that has something to do with it. But yea. I just basically tell the controllers that I understand I’m released and to have a nice day. 😊
I watch your videos over and over again. I love that you hand fly IFR and do it in a piper. Simple , solid flying. I have a request...make more videos
Thanks for the kind words. Working on more videos. Not too good at editing so it takes me a bit longer. I have alot of footage from some flights to chicago and other places that I want to make videos with . More coming soon.
Very helpful. Thanks!
I’m located near by at 47N we should do a fly-in sometime I actually do flight training at your airport I fly a Mooney
Kevin nice. I’m down for a meet up. I always stop at 47n for fuel. Cheapest in the area and the fuel at old bridge hasn’t worked in months.
SuprattPilot next time you’re going to be at my airport let me know
Are you still flying?
Kevin yes. I fly all the time. I haven’t filmed much of my flights. I’m gonna start it up again soon. The flying is fun. The video editing takes all the time.
Yeah I hear...I have a Cherokee 140 with out an AP, but I do have an old AutoFlite 2 Wing leveler if I ever get in trouble..I’ve had my IFR Cert for just over a year and I use it often. I fly out of WBW in PA , not far from you.
I’m assuming you don’t have an Auto Pilot?
No I don’t. I wish I did. It would make these flights a lot easier. Even something basic like altitude hold or even just a wing leveler would help. It is coming in the future though. I am weighing my options of either spending the money on some upgrades to my current airplane, or sell it and spend a little more money and buy a faster more equipped airplane
I really enjoy your videos. I watch them frequently and each time I learn a little something. I fly a Cherokee 180D out of KPOU and I would love to fly IFR to Florida. One day.
Stay tunes for more videos. The flight to florida is still my favorite flight ive ever done till this day. I learned so much and would do it again tomorrow if I had to go there
Hey SuprattPilot, I never asked you but do you know Joe and Alison Holt up at Old Bridge Airport? We are members of the Black Pilots of America together and I believe that Joe and Alison own a flight school up at Old Bridge. If you do know them and ever see them, tell them that Sam Washington from Mississippi said hello. Great videos by the way!
Samuel Washington I️ absolutely do know them. Great people and a very well run flight school. Also a busy school. I’ve known them for some time. Even tho I️ didn’t do my training there with them, Joe did my primary check ride about 16 years ago and my instrument checkride also about 6 years ago. I️ will tell them you said hello. I️ was just at the airport this morning too.
SuprattPilot, that's awesome! Hopefully I can make a trip up there one day and get to meet you and see the Warrior if you still have it.
Nice
Good video..Would love to see what you filed for that leg
Yea it was so long ago i cant even find it. i do know that i filed and was cleared for my original route which was pretty much right down the coast. The actual flight was a few hundred miles more inland after diverting around all the weather.
just watched this with the girl who is on the radio!
You're right best to get some actual but not hard IFR for practice. Working on IPC now, hard to stay current and proficient in IFR unless you fly in system often. The FAA currency requirements for IFR aren't safe minimums as far as I'm concerned. Good video.
Hey bro, any video's coming soon??? Also, how many total flight hours did it take you from NJ to FL back? Regards
Bill D sorry for the 2 year delayed response. It was a little over 14 hrs in my logbook. I had to do a few short hops that weren’t caught on camera
Good video. I like the style that you're using for the editing and commentary and the text for explanations of the trip. Post more trip videos! Thanks.
Cool video!
Nice job. I do the same sometimes out of N07 and it's def a pain. Makes you appreciate towered fields more!
Great video! I'll come back and watch a few more times. Finishing ground IFR...about to put in air time towards IFR...Thanks!!
It's nice to have a video of GCO use on RUclips, it's a weird concept for those who have never seen it in use.
Good job buddy. I did the same pull in my supra video also lol.
nice video . I m a very low time private pilot. just passed my check ride. looking forward to ifr training. this videos helped. Thanks
Wondered where you went! Good to see you are posting videos again.
yea been a while had some issues with my movie making software....I ended up not selling the plane so expect some more videos real soon
Looking forward to seeing more videos. Would you consider a video about the process of buying your own plane? The way you went about the search, inspection, tips for someone who hasn't done it yet?
What is that beeping every time you try to communicate ???Annoying
Stealthy1. It only happens a when I'm on the ground using the RCO. I don't know why it does that.
Got it..there a loud beep the G1000 auto pilot does when its iniciating...I thoug some lika that ..Thx for share
Good evening,Just watching your videos of your flight to Florida and I wondered if you plan to visit Oshkosh this year. I plan to fly my Cherokee 140 up there this year and I'd enjoy meeting you and comparing planes and discussing IFR flying.Sam Washington, KRNVCleveland, MS
Hello Not sure if Ill make it to ashkosh this year. i am in the process of selling my airplane in hopes to upgrade to an arrow or something of that type. I am trying to fly as much as possible before I get rid of the plane. my next trip is in a few weeks from Nj to chicago to visit friends...I usually stop at millersberg ohio for fuel (10G) on the way.. Im always looking to talk to other pilots
Hello, Just looking at the videos again and wondered if you ever sold the Warrior? Did you decide if you will make it to KOSH this year? Sam Washington
I still have the warrior. But didn't make it out to osh this year
What the the letter A mean on the approach
+revowild The letters just mean that the approach is not straight into a specific runway and the letter A just means that there is another vor approach thats uses the same VOR, so you might see vor-a vor-b for the same airport. Also you might see vor approaches to a specific runway. This would be VOR RWy24 or something like that
Good morning SuprattPilot, I was watching this video again this morning and I have a question for you. How did you get your cell phone call to record in the video? Do you have it connected in your intercom? Sam Washington, N6477w
+Samuel Washington Well the call wasn't actually from my cell phone. i was using the RCO (remote communications outlet) at my airport. Its basically a frequency we have that we click the mic 4 times and it automatically calls approach for clearances..no cell phone needed...So you hear it on the video the same way you hear ATC. i have a special cable to capture atc with my camera. The reason we have the RCO is because you cannot reach clearance delivery from the ground at my airport using the aircraft's radios, and around NY airspace they dont like when pilots depart vfr and then ask to pick up their ifr clearances. I do have the option with my headset to plug a cable into it from my actual cell phone and you would still hear my call. I sometimes use my cell phone if the RCO at my airport isnt working. if I did this you would still hear it in the video the same exact way. I actually use my cell phone in another video for my clearance. Click the link to watch it ruclips.net/video/wsSa3SAmdR4/видео.html
I'm just seeing this but great stuff, thanks for sharing.
are GCO,s a thing of the past now that most use foreflight to file do you think ? have you ever tried calling appch on the ground or do they get mad if you do that ?
+Aidan Beirne Not really They are still used alot. They are a very good way to communicate with ATC at airports where you cannot reach anyone on a regular frequency. I cant reach approach from my airport without using this, so calling them on radio they wont hear me anyway. The other way to do it is just call them on a regular phone with a cell phone. This is what I do at airports that dont have a GCO or an approach freq. to use. Comm radios need line of sight to work so if you have tall buildings or hills around the airport you need to call with a phone line. I flew into ocean city MD a few weeks ago and ATC couldnt hear me on the clearance Delivery freq that is published, so i taxied to the other side of the airport and they were able to hear me.
+SuprattPilot roger . I call FSS on the phone , tried the bluetooth on my bose A20 and it worked great . I,m going to file using foreflight and see how that works next time I file . Must try and get over to oldbridge again sometime along the shore under the kennedy bravo . whens drag racing season ?
Aidan Beirne Well the GCO isnt for filing flight plans or anything. You can reach the FSS by clicking the mic a few more times but Ive never used it. I use flightplan.com sometimes and mostly foreflight to file flight plans. only use the GCo to get my clearance before takeoff
+SuprattPilot roger , I take it you can get your release for take off from FSS too .
great video .. is that your own warrior ?
+Aidan Beirne yes this is my own personal plane
gotta love the warrior .!!!!!
Just wish it was a little faster thats all
Nice video , I just looked up the route on foreflight , about 4 hours . what was the fuel burn at 10,OOO , seems like a long flight on full tanks , . Great video though .. thanks
+Aidan Beirne Thanks My exact route was slightly shorter then 4hrs..depending on the routing you get from atc this flight is usually around 4 hrs give or take a few minutes. I was slightly faster due to a tail wind my first 50 minutes of the flight then going around weather added about 20 mins to my flight in total. My fuel burn at my power setting was about 9gph on average.(i wasnt at 10000 feet the whole flight) My plane has an endurance of 5+ hrs at that fuel burn. It is a long flight but well within the capabilities of the Warrior. i do these flights all the time. i just dont film all of them
roger , 9GPH time 4 hours would leave a nice reserve . good flying .
yo, coupl'a questions for u.........did u do any weather planning for this trip? maybe u did and it looked worth a try. also, u against using a tablet and foreflight or garmin pilot? I'm trying to figure out what u were doing on the 396 on final...might be easier if u had a tablet or even on ur phone. anyways, good stuff!
+h2oski1200 Yes I did alot of weather planning for the trip...It was very doable, just if you fly anywhere on the east coast in the summer time (especially florida) you will know that T storms are very unpredictable..The can tell you where they might be but they can pop up very fast and unexpectedly anywhere along the route...during this flight they just converged in front of me and I was no longer able to get thru them, and I wasnt about to fly 20-30 miles off the coast in a single engine airplane to get around them so I decided to make a pre-cautionary landing. ..... I use an ipad with foreflight for weather, planning, and en route flyin and I have NEXRAD weather on my GPS..... What was I doing on the GPS on final.....if i didnt knock the mic cable out of the camera you would have heard the answer, but basically since this was a completely unplanned stop and i didnt know too much about the airport I was landing at cause i picked it since it was the closest airport with decent weather..on the chart it shows this airport has a control tower..what the chart doesnt say is that the tower is only open during weekends at certain times. so when ATC told me to change frequencies I went to the tower freq and go no answers when i said I was on final...So i was looking on the gps to make sure I wasnt seeing things and then I had to switch back to Approach controller cause the tower wasnt answering..he then told me the tower wasnt open at that time...so i switched back and landed normally.....It was no big deal but the controller could have told me that before switching frequencies. There really was no way for me to get that info since I was flying in and out of IMC almost right to final approach and it was only a matter of about 6 minutes from the time i Decided to land at that airport till I was on final where u see in the video....not a good idea to be looking thru an AF/D while hand flying in hard IMC.
Thanks for the reply. I fly a Cherokee 140 with dual VOR, one with GS. I have a handheld GPS (I-Fly 700 and tablet app) that I use now for VFR. How often do you get to go direct?
Atc offers direct a lot actually when not in busy airspace. Also if you ask them they will try to accommodate you if they can. When I'm flying around my home airport which is in New York airspace they don't give many shortcuts or direct to. Also with vors for ifr nav there aren't very many times you can go direct to destination unless the destination has a vor located there or atc gives you a direct to heading. This is where you would need to have an ifr certified gps to fly direct cause following the magenta line on an ifr gps is legal for ifr flight. Otherwise you are stuck flying airways or vectors from atc
SuprattPIlot, Great video. I actually watched all three videos on this flight and enjoyed them all. I have one question. You mentioned to someone that you use VOR-to-VOR navigation with a VFR GPS for backup. How can you conduct a IFR flight with a VFR GPS? I intend to begin IFR training this spring and I am just curious how you are conducting the flights. Thanks. Sam Washington Hopeful IFR Pilot
You can use it during an ifr flight to help you out but it can't be your primary way of navigation. I use vors for my main navigation. Also you can't use my gps to fly gps approaches. That's why I had to divert to grand strand. Also there are 4 videos for this entire flight. 2 down to Florida and 2 on my way home
I didn't notice this the first time I watched your video. But starting at 2:38 you can actually see one of the parachutists land just the right of the taxiway. Right after the "What the hell!" 😀
+Marauder92V I never noticed this either....I finally see it now lol...it took me a few times to watch it to find it
Can you tell me what video editing software you use?
Actually nothing special. I just use Windows movie maker. I'm actually looking for a better program so I can have more options for editing
nice video i also like steam gauges dont like glass panel.i have an ipad air with foreflight as my gps.biulding xcountry time saw i could start my ifr training.
how long did it take to get your destination?
Total flying time was about 7 hrs. Should have been around 6 and a half hrs but I had to do a lot of deviations for weather
great, still faster than going by car right?
Yea and sometimes faster then airlines. I met some of my family in Florida. We both left our house in nj at the same time and I got to the hotel in Florida a few minutes before them. I don't have to wait in security lines or wait for my baggage
yes..thats one of the best things about being the pilot..no waiting in line..haha
nice, i love your videos, its like i'm flying along with you in the copilot seat..lol..is this your personal aircraft or renting?
This is my personal airplane
so when is the best time to cancel an IFR flight? will atc still know what you wanna do if you cancel it before you get to the airport?
Any time in vfr and will remain vfr. Best when canceling to pick up vfr flight following to your intended airport.
ok cool..thanks
atc just talks too fast for me. i think id make them really mad trying to write stuff down and asking them to repeat what they just said or "can you say that just a liiiiil' bit slower?? preciate it"....lol
Yes they do talk fast sometimes but they will slow down if you ask them. Also most everything is in a certain format so info/instructions from atc, like a clearance is given the same way everytime so you kind of know what to expect and how to write and read it back.
yea.. but i would love to be able to fly but FAA denied me for vertigo reasons...go figure..probaby for the best
Right me too , this guys good.
I miss flying :'(
Nice video presentation.
Nice video. Try and get the camera nearer to the gauges on the next one. Let those glass cockpit pilots how it is done with traditional instruments!
What's "build up"?
+thh5019 Build ups are those tall plumes of puffy clouds. Mainly seen during the summer months where thunderstorms are an everyday thing. It is the beginning stages of what could eventually build into a thunderstorm. Pilots like to deviate around these because they can be very bumpy inside and around them. This just gives a smoother ride for passengers. If its already a t storm then ALL airplanes no matter what size should stay away
+SuprattPilot so basically another name for cumulus? Thanks!!
+thh5019 Cumulus type clouds
Well done Captain,,,,Grumpy Controller at Trenton 7:35 Beautiful approach, just never look down while taxiing
Nice video - Why are you using the co-pilot's push-to-talk button?
+Jan Krouwer because the cable i use to capture the ATC audio with the video wasnt long enough to reach where I put the camera so i had to plug into the co pilots headphone jack so my ptt button on the pilots side wasnt cuing my mic
Thanks for the video. What equipment are you flying?
Sarin Jalal not sure what you mean by equipment, but my aircraft is a Piper PA-28 Warrior. As far as navigation, I use good old VOR navigation with a VFR GPS just to reference and get weather and I use an IPAD running Foreflight for charts and planning info..
I enjoyed this trip. There are so many videos that give the impression that if you don't have a glass panel you can't do IFR! But one thing I do envy is Nexrad. We don't have that in Europe so it is Russian Roulette with T-Storms. Keep up the good work.
Thank you. This is what I am trying to show with my videos. All I see is these people with airplanes none of us can afford, so I want to show that there is still a lot of capability in an airplane with steam gauges. And yes nexrad is a lifesaver. Probably wouldn't have made it that far without it
+SuprattPilot steam gauges are great , I did my IFR in a warrior with steam guages and a garmin GNS430 ..
