There Will Never Be Another Gordie Howe
#hockey #nhl #gordiehowe
Gordie Howe, is one of the greatest players in hockey history, a man who cheated father time to play in the NHL in five decades, a man who won 4 stanley cup championships, had 23 NHL all-star appearances, won 6 hart trophies and 6 art Ross trophies, as the NHL’s most valuable player and top point-scorer. A man who had 22 consecutive NHL seasons of scoring on at least 23 goals… And whats crazy is that this list of achievements barely scratches the surface on how Mr. Hockey has left an impact on the game we see today.
Born March 31, 1928 in Floral, Saskatchewan as one of nine children, Gordie Howe’s pro hockey career got off on a bad foot. Not for Howe necessarily, bu...

I was not a fan of Mario, I was a fan of Gretzky's. However I'd be lying if I said I wasn't impressed by him when he went on that 46 game scoring streak. Also battling cancer and managing to come back from that and still play like he never left, I can't help but admire him.

I'm looking at this from the perspective of a Capitals fan. Mario was amazing. I remember one game in the mid-late 80s at the Capital Center where he had something like 5 goals against the Caps. The Penguins were not a good team at that point and he was basically all they had. The Caps had been a pretty good defensive team but they couldn't stop him that night.

I love #66, and he was an amazing playmaker, but to say his IQ and vision was 2nd to none is a bit of a stretch. There is no possible universe Mario ever gets 163 assists in one season. He never even once hit Gretzky’s first 10 year average (120). His best assist season ever (114) is tied with Gretzky’s 8th best. He never even eclipsed 100 assists more than that one time. Gretz eclipsed 100 assists ELEVEN consecutive times and owns the top 7 assist marks. It’s not even close.

Let's not forget about the formidable contribution of the Captain in the winning of the three Stanley cups. The dynamic duo of Toews/Kane was lost after 2015. While Kane continued to perform he didn't have the leadership ability and the defense ability of Toews and Toews ability to lead by example was sapped by his health problems after 2015. To win another Cup after 2015 would have required both men to be at the top of their game. The Tazer/Kaner duo won those Cups.

Saw his famous 4 goal game against Tampa in person. In terms of what I've seen live? I've never seen anyone be able to take over a game on his own the way he used to. You have to remember how bad those early DC teams were. Pittsburgh drafted Flower, Malkin and Crosby with their 1st pics in a span of 3 years. So when people point to the Penguins early success I point to their front office for being brilliant in that period. Washington had a carousel in net until Holtby came along. In person I've never seen a player like him.

The man can't catch a break, can he. He put up playoff numbers we haven't seen since the 80's and early 90s by Gretzky and Lemieux. Mounts the biggest comeback in the finals since 1945(79 years), breaks the assists record. Only to lose 2-1 in game 7. Don't give me that regular season hero bullshit either. He has a higher points per game in the playoffs. Lemieux has 1.61 points per game in his career playoffs, McDavid has 1.58. He is not that far off. He is not Gretzky, because Gretzky was out of this world talent that may never be seen again.

Mario's skills were otherworldly. Even Gretzky acknowledged that. Just the fact that Mario is even in the same conversation as Gretzky is testament to how truly great he was. I think Gretzky had the greatest career of any professional athlete in history...in any sport. But Mario was pretty close. Orr was the best skater, Mario had the most skill, but Gretzky is still at the top.

I had a chance meeting with Wayne on a flight to Toronto 15 years ago. He was intensely interested in my scholarly work and forthcoming book examining the Bolshevik role in the Russian Civil War. I was really impressed with, first, his curiosity and probing questions- and frankly quite surprised by his depth of knowledge when it came to the ideological foundations of the Bolshevik movement, including Marxist theory, Leninism, and the writings of key figures like Vladimir Lenin. I knew of his genius of finding and capitalizing on open ice but his intelligence on this narrow but important slice of history really floored me. Great guy!

people are quick to point out the devils defensive style but what they ignore or fail to realize is you couldn't dump and chase against marty because of his puck skills, ultimately forcing teams to try and skate and pass through those all star defenders. He was literally like a 3rd defensemen out there and like the video stated the NHL changed the rule to keep marty and the devils from being dominant. It's not like he just sat back there twiddling his thumbs and racking up wins/shutouts

The 2012 playoff run should not be overlooked. No more Stevens. No more Niedermayer. No more trap. And Marty (who was well past his prime) still outdueled the #1 goalie in the NHL at the time in the EC finals (Lundqvist), and just came up short to win a 4th cup against the Kings. To me, that deep run proved all the naysayers wrong that it was the 'system' that made Marty successful. In the end, he proved it was his mastery of the hybrid style, his consistency, endurance, amazing stickhandling and a fierce glove hand. His wins and shutout records won't be broken for generations, maybe never.
