Dagmar in Treble
Германия
This channel is the naked truth showing me struggle to play the piano (and sometimes try to sing).
I'll track new piece progress - and failure - and maybe sometimes after lots of practicing also some recordings that went quite well.
I started to learn piano in July 2019 self taught with not so much discipline, and found my teacher December 2021, which also marks the starting point of almost daily and focussed practise.

Whoa....
Ok, so this still needs more work to be put in.
BUT what a huge progress! From 7 min to 3.16! And way more control over dynamics and phrases. I put sooooo much effort into interpretation, many decisions, many questions I asked myself (still haven't answers to all of them).
This was more an intellectual challenge.
Technically I could play everything nicely, but I'd either need to memorize it better or be a better sight reader to get those hesitations eliminated. However memorization here is like intonating Klingon language without knowing the vocabulary. Soooooo hard! I have some passages well memorized and as soon as I have all works out smoothly, with lot of braincells left for inte...

I hope now it has full audio... This is a lovely arrangement by Will O'Donnell (with some minor adjustments by myself). I am really bad at these pop songish things, so this is my very poor start. But I am really looking forward to learning it during advent. 🙂

This turned out easier than I thought, so I spent some time in developping a nice tone. Watching the video back I think I still can work on more wrist rotation and relaxation, so I will keep this in mind 😊 I am happy that this one felt easy. It is another proof that I really have progressed this year. I remember my sight reading attempts at the beginning of 2024, it was soo bad. Now I can read ...

Phew... give me left hand patterns and I am fine. Give me hands together choral like chord thingies and it takes me weeks to learn and 15 attempts to record 😂 But I really like the recording attempts! I always seem to listen much closer to hand balance during recording. Suddenly I have the ears of a listener and spot all the tiny details I want to improve. And then I listen back to the recordin...

This was one of the first pieces I got from my teacher, when I decided to take lessons 3 years ago. I never finished it for a recording, always had glitches or hesitations and haven't touched it for 2.5 years now. This is one of the moments when I feel how much I have progressed. I still had the same troublespots when sight reading, but I instantly knew what to do to overcome it: Analyse, under...

Ugh... I don't expect it to be ready at the end of the month. But maybe I can get it to 5 minutes with only a few hesitations? Full memorization is unrealistic, it's so weird and atonal. It's a grade 5, and playing isn't the problem. Reading is. So many chromatic chords, double crosses, accidentals all the time, no scale or anything to help me know where I am or what I am doing, all instinct us...

This year's Halloween composition. This is the result of working with diminished and augmented chords and trying to understand how I can use them. I think it has some soundtrack vibes, reminds me of the movie UP somehow. I like it, although it was a bit under time pressure, so maybe I will work on it more in the future. It feels more like a fragment to me. On the other hand I always have diffic...

I don't know the composer but would really like to credit her or him. Could it be Manfred Schmitz or Günther Heumann? If you know this one, please tell me! It's a great piece to practice broken chords accompaniment in 10th voicing. With my small hands, key to mastering this was to anchor the 2nd finger, have it already in preparee in place when the root note is played. I am very proud that I ca...

This is a submission for student review on pianote. But because I am desperate I make this public, maybe some of more advanced players who watch this have great tips for me, too! Gah... I just can't get the hands in bar 11 perfectly synced. Also the scales still tend to not perfectly be even. I've already worked so much on it, slow, fast, building in chains, seperating sections, concentrating o...

Always so weird: Give me a grade 2 baroque piece and I need weeks. Give me something in romantic style, chord based and expressive and I get a happy recording within 2 days. I definitely have my strengths in expression, not note reading or speed. This is another piece from her lovely book "Lyric Moments 2" (Affiliate link: amzn.to/3YkCoJy)

This is one of the pieces that isn't too difficult but I keep making mistakes at random spots. I think I'd need to play it 500x more. If you find the one wrong inverted chord in this recording, you may keep it 😉 The harmony is right, and I am so glad I finally didn't obviously glitch, so I didn't attempt to rerecord. Also my pace was better tahn in the previous attempts, although I want to work...

Ländler for Schubert by Dagmar Bittner

Watching up until around 0:30, I would suggest playing each hand separately at a slow speed first, then moving to try both hands together in small two-three note phrases. Once you can do that, join the phrases together. For the uneven dynamics, I would try stiffening the pinky and practicing *just* playing that note at a piano or mezzopiano level. But yeah, I think overall it sounds pretty good
They work hands seperate and slow, too. That's what I've done so often, it helped a lot to get where I am now, but it doesn't help me smoothen the last steps anymore 😭
(A bit lumpy at faster tempo.) Probiere die l.h. gebrochene g dur akkord punktiert. Und frage deinen lehrer, was er meint! 🙂
@@dagmarintreble I can't give more details about what you can do in a comment (face to face would be much easier). But your left hand needs some attention to improve control. Here are some pieces you might consider for this: Gurlitt Night Journey Op.82/65 (elementary) Mozart Sonata E flat K282 first movement (intermediate) Chopin Prelude B minor Op28/6 (intermediate) A study to practise the broken chord patten: Czerny op261/39 (short and easy) Op299/3 (much harder). Perhaps you should reconsider the fingering and use 4 finger on white note arpeggios in root position for the second note. In the long run this will strengthen the 4 finger, but you need to be very careful about how you practise so you don't strain yourself. Good luck - and do give the pieces a listen!
I have watched/listened to a few more recordings and talks on your channel and will recommend it to my adult pupil. So much enthusiasm for piano, so many ideas and insights! This piece comes across very well in your recording: the work you put into it has paid off. On the subject of effective practice, you might enjoy Molly Gebrian's videos on RUclips. She is interested in how the brain responds to practice and what the most effective routines are from a neuroscientific perspective. Something else I recommend (I'm a teacher, sorry, I can't help it!) Finally: how did you get your English so good?
Thanks for the recommendation, that sounds very interesting and I appreciate it! The process of learning is so fascinating! And thanks for those kind words. Yes, I really love learning the piano. It brings me so much joy. "Poldi" is a real friend and I love how we get better together. My English is a mix from school days and too many TV series and RUclips channels/learning platforms. That's why it's probably a wild mix of all accents possible 😅
@@dagmarintreble Your English is excellent - accent and vocabulary - and I admired the way you have learned the technical terms in music theory in English (doppeldominante = secondary dominant: that was impressive!). (By the way I studied piano in Germany and I funded it by teaching English...) I also listened to your Brahms D minor Waltz: it was a funny video, but I remember when I first came across this piece as a youngster I had a similar reaction. How do you play it? (Especially the second half.) Dagmar, I wish you the best for piano in future and I will keep contact with your channel. You have made a fantastic success of your project and it is a great model for others to follow.👍
@itchy2learn I learn with many videos in English, so sometimes I don't know the German term 😂 And I really turned into a theory nerd, I love it so much, it's so cool when you find concepts in pieces and thus can memorize them easily, or use a theory for own compositions and be surprised how well they turn out, althoughyou never thought you have talent for composition. Really thank you for your kind words, that's so encouraging 🥰
@itchy2learn Concerning the Brahms: I practiced it till I got one recording I really liked (is that what you saw? Or the video where I was desperately asking for help? So there is a final recording video of the Brahms). After I got it I instantly dropped it. Maybe in a year or 2 I might do it again, but it really twisted my brain and took me weeks, so I got fed up. During the recording I was singing the lyrics I wrote for it in my head, which helped a lot. Not only for rhythm and emphasis, but also voicing. But it was really mentally exhausting to play it. Far away from ease and fun. Yeah, maybe in 2 years I am ready to enjoy it. But I really learned a lot!
@@dagmarintreble Yes, that's the kind of story that is actually quite motivating, because you faced down the problem. (I saw the final recording with the lyrics. Hilarious!) For my part, I hardly ever play a piece once it's recorded unless I have to play it in concert. But the fact is that it's quite easy to revive pieces you have played before. (That's something Molly Gebrian talks about and useful when you are thinking about repertoire.)
Wunderschön 😊
Dankeschön 😊
This is a piece I have used for GCSE recordings a few times. It's a kind of minimalism, with some very obvious patterns, so easy for learners without much experience to make an effect with. It does need quite a bit of flexibility in tempo and dynamic variety to sound convincing. If you are interested in hearing more of Manfred Schmitz's music in this vein, I have recorded the whole book of Rainbow Preludes this comes from. And he wrote under a pen name 'George Nevada' (also a lot of pieces on my channel you might like). A question: what nationality are you? German?
@@itchy2learn yes, German. I will have a look at xour suggestions for inspiration, thanks 🥰

Das klingt schon jetzt sehr ausdrucksstark. Super!
I am an amateur guitarist. Thanks for the ideas; I thought I was the only crazy one in this world...

Oooh lieben Dank!
