It's respectable when fashion styling isn't just about clothes, it's about character. We found this philosophy in Belinda Martin, who we got to interview for July's BVL, and it was a pleasure. She knows the perfect blend of cuts, prints, & textures, at any given moment for any given situation. Watch our video for her take on living in Greenpoint, Brooklyn, and her interpretation of styling. bel...

Shantell is probably one of Brooklyn's most prolific artists. It's a good thing, too, because her art is highly unique and fun, and we can always use these things in abundance. We've always admired her work from afar, here, we got to visit her studio in personal close-ups. A wonderful creature of British accents and intriguing insights, Shantell was a pleasure to interview. Shantell Martin is a...

This month, we got to interview one of Putnam Rolling Ladder Co.'s employees, Joseph. I previously met Joseph when taking photos for a Day Job Magazine's article. This time he showed me how to actually build a ladder, at the company's factory in Bushwick. He is a kind, calm man who has lived in Brooklyn for 26 years and cares intrinsically for the Polish community. I completely enjoyed hearing ...

Spectacle Theater, a place of viewing movies and gathering for a collective of filmmakers, collectors, editors, performers, and artists, was the perfect place to interview Nick Shimkin. He isn't called a "walking IMDB" by Brooklyn friends for no reason, and he certainly contributes to the curating of DIY, independent film screenings that have become so important to the Brooklyn art culture. Wha...

We collaborated with Stephanie twice this month on a music video and photo shoot, and decided to celebrate her incredible talent and creativity through her specialized art form: make-up. While on set, we recognized that her skill lies in 2 parts: attention to detail by way of shapes and color, and the ability to ease talent to perform their best by her interaction with them. It's not a surprise...

This music video for New York's band Vaura, is about textures and imagery to weave together an abstract tale of a possible dimensional crossing between life and death. We were inspired by the beauty of black sand, tremendous rocks, the colors you see when glass hits light, and this record's album art, photographed by Alexander Binder. Shot in 3 locations: Joshua Tree, Malibu, CA and Brooklyn, N...

Words to describe Jacqueline Castel? Talented, stylish, mystic, tasteful, reflective, thoughtful. We followed her on set earlier this month as she directed a music video, and later interviewed her in the basement of Academy Records on North 6th in Williamsburg, while employees of Sacred Bones Records worked on their next vinyl release. She has directed numerous, gorgeous music videos and films,...

It was an unusually warm day in late fall as we crowded Erin Batson's Greenpoint living room, also known as her art studio. Her craft is soft yet deft, and so are her opinions of Brooklyn. It's not easy to be an artist working hard 24/7 in this city, but Erin has a refreshing take on what keeps us all here in the first place. Visit one of her pop-up shops this holiday season at a local Brooklyn...

Not all of us can just get up and move, but sometimes we'll find ourselves in new places. And sometimes it seems Brooklyn harbors the most of us. Dan Wyman shares with us his treasure hunting and journey to our side of town with his twin daughters. We sat in his office and marvelled at his gems in a corner of Williamsburg, Brooklyn. Dan Wyman is a buyer and consigner of antiquated, rare, and ou...

October in New York City brings cloudy skies and real stories, and we sat on our fire escape hovering in the hazy air to hear Gizmo Collado tell his. This born and raised NYC native recounts his memories of what New York once was, and gives us his opinion of what it has become. Gizmo Collado is a DJ, avid bicyclist, skateboarder, and has seen all the changes that New York City has gone through ...

It was a hot night along the borders of Bushwick and Bed-Stuy, whether holed up in Clem's room, or on a rooftop facing the hospital lights of Woodhull Medical Center. Amidst the JMZ trains and a Friday night rehearsal, Aoi shows us that getting medieval is pretty much essential in our September video letter. Catch them at a show soon, friends, and be sure to dance in your armor. Aoi is a mediev...

The first of many Flaure.tv's monthly video letters, clocking in August 2011, featuring a lovely pair of twins on a hot sweltering summer day at Prospect Park. We were inspired after working with the twins on a Kickstarter video for Holly's artist residency in Brazil. We realized that not only is Brooklyn full of fun and creative characters, the way this community grows and networks is overflow...

Most haunting song version ever.
This is actually really good!
For an old Kay banjo the tone is amazing. Wonder if it has a tone ring in it? Nice version.
Frank taught me this song almost 7 years ago via this video, still hasn't lost it's beauty.
do you happen to know what tuning he's in? i'm learning the roundpeak version in leftwich's book, which is nice in A, but i feel like this is maybe in a different tuning? and i agree, this is an incredibly beautiful version.
Yup! I posted a query on banjo hangout and got the answer: gCGCE pitched about a half-step sharp. This is open C tuning. I worked it out and play it pretty decently now. give it a shot and if you get stuck i'm happy to fill in any gaps! snowdrop is in this tuning as well...that's next on my list.
sure thing, nevin. yeah hit me up. you'll be my first banjo hangout friend haha. i don't really know how that works. i've been trying to figure out if this tune is pulled from some other source...it's definitely not the standard, i haven't heard poor ellen smith played like this, or any other song for that matter. haunting.
Very good
Sad to hear Frank stopped performing music. He was one of the only people doing this with sincerity
I spoke to Blind Boy Paxton at a gig recently and was told the same news. Apparently he's working in construction now. I was gutted
@@TomDurkin1987 Well, he's following in the footsteps of other great banjo players like Roscoe Holcomb and Dock Boggs.
@idahoduckhunter, tuning is ADAE starting from the low string.
that hit something deep down in my soul like a nine pound hammer
oh this started getting my favorite kind of weird around 2:40 and on
I saw Frank Fairfield when he traveled around a little bit. He happened to be in my hometown in England at this small bar which was more like someone's front room. He did a 15 minute set and I was just astounded. We were all silent. He was able to hold everyone in that pub unlike anything I've seen. There was something so striking in his performance, we just weren't expecting anything like what we saw - shamefully, nor do I expect to see anything quite like it ever again.
Lee Cass lucky ; )
I saw him in Brighton many years ago in a small pub. Amazing guy
@@smoke-dd3ir so did I! I remember he wasn’t very happy with how it went for some reason. I was blown away.
<3
didn't really like it
I totally HEART this. I give it 5 out of 5 Rebabs. ;)
MEGET BRA BOYS :)
Is that banjo partially fretless? sounds like the first few frets are missing
As of writing still under 20,000 people on youtube have seen this. I'd like to congratulate you all! I saw this man in an ex-army medical tent at doune the rabbit hole one year. As my band was on next. Which, as it happens, is an utter wall of noise destroyed with maths fest. That event can only ever happen on one strand of the multiverse. Which turns out to be this one. Yes!
Sounds like those old records without the scratches.very well done.
para morirse...
Fantastic video and audio.

Seeing them tonight with Alcest and Deafheaven...looking forward to it
Yep very good !
Zohra Atash has an amazing voice. I just started to really listen to her. great!
Terrible vignette effect on the video!
Love his stuff, but I don't care much for this version.
@tinjarir if you have spotify, his album is on there.
Great music, fascinating video.
A mix of Reuben and darling cora?
Fantastic!
Love the filming, and having an awesome time picking on my guitar with him !!
I just learned of Frank Fairfield through the blog "The Needle and the Groove" and I'm blown away by him. Love the way he rides the rhythm in this tune. Nice. He's helping to keep our traditional music alive. Good video.
prodigy
