The Bombard in Association Croquet
Просмотров 3834 месяца назад
While not being an absolute necessity for a beginner to master, the bombard can be a game changing stroke for the more advanced player. Providing a means in certain situations to make something out of nothing.
A Crafty Trick for Association Croquet
Просмотров 8894 месяца назад
This animation presents a method for creating a break from a seemingly impossible situation. It illustrates an interesting and slightly dangerous manoeuvre which is very handy to know. If the roquet of the jammed ball is attempted from behind the hoop special care would need to be taken not to knock it all the way through.
The Squeeze Leave in Association Croquet

Leaving your two balls together at your hoop can make you feel confident of scoring that hoop in the next turn. But, is there a better way, so that a break could be (almost) assured? Music by Yurii Kohut from Pixabay
The Ratio Ruler in Association Croquet
Просмотров 6626 месяцев назад
Preparation for the shots to come is an important part of the game of Association Croquet. This animation introduces the Ratio Ruler as an aid to help in the process. The notion of working backwards when planning shots is also suggested.
The Square Shot in Association Croquet
Просмотров 1,2 тыс.6 месяцев назад
This animation illustrates the general look of the balls when set up for a croquet shot which gives the most amount of width, and similar distances. Known as the square shot, it proves invaluable but does require practice.
Two Bad Pioneers. A tip for intermediate Association Croquet players.
Просмотров 1,1 тыс.6 месяцев назад
This animation suggests a way out for players when a pioneer for the next hoop is impossible to make. It implies that pairing two balls up in the middle of the lawn can be a desirable tactic to regain control of the break.
The Jump Shot in Association Croquet
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.6 месяцев назад
In Association Croquet the Jump Shot is primarily used as a last resort...to get out of some sort of trouble. For example, if the angle to the hoop is excessively wide. It should be practised off the lawn to avoid lawn damage too. As with any angled hoop the near upright (wire) should not be hit first.
The Shots in Association Croquet

This animation introduces all the basic shots from the Stop Shot to the Pass Roll. It suggests hand positions and required forward tilt. It also illustrates how they are all connected as a set.
Pesky Balls

Having the two balls touching on a croquet stroke is fairly important. A gap, even tiny, can lead to unexpected outcomes and inconsistency. On some lawns getting the balls to stay together is more difficult than it seems.
Throw, in the game of Association Croquet

One of the factors which steers balls off line is due to the effect of throw. With careful planning the effect can be taken care of, to some extent.
I've Hit. What Now? Association Croquet Tip.

This animation investigates one strategy which could help a beginner proceed after the first roquet of a turn, in Association Croquet. It aims to provide ideas to help establish a break.
The Peel in Association Croquet
Просмотров 2,9 тыс.2 года назад
While making a break and scoring hoops for one ball, other balls can also be guided through their hoops. These other balls can be the player's partner ball, and even the opponent's ball. Peeling is done to either speed up one's own progress or to foil the opponent's plans. Music by Bensound.com
The Cannon in Association Croquet

This animation attempts to introduce the fundamentals in cannon design. The intent is to help the manufacture of cannons situated anywhere on the lawn. Consequently, the "Corner 1 cannon" and the "Corner 2 cannon" etcetera are not addressed directly.

Excellent squeeze leave explanation by the GOAT of croquet animation, the one and only John Hutchison 👏
@@hazelnut6399 lol...the goat in sheep's clothing...😅
Another well done video.
@@chrisbarley9584 Cheers, glad you like it....
great video....but i was waiting for the answer to the 'why' question about how it leaves us with a next turn break.
@@wnh79 hello. Well a ball at your hoop and a ball at your hoop after next is a pretty good place to be. If the ball at hoop 1 is removed you still have a rush to hoop 2. You'd then leave the ball you rushed at hoop 2 and take the blue ball to hoop 1. If the ball at hoop 2 is removed then you could rush to hoop 2 and take off to hoop 1 where there is a ball waiting for you. A win win.
Very informative and amusing.
Thanks John! A succinct explanation of the croquet shot. Great graphics. Like and subscribe if you are interested in improving your association croquet game or helping others with their game. By showing our support we may be fortunate enough that John Hutchinson will continue to create croquet animations.
Very Good John. Good subject for the newer players.
Thanks Murray!
Hi John, I really like the animations you have done and would love to know what program you use to do them. I've listed the videos in what I think is a logical grouping and sequence on our Toronto Croquet Clubs website menu Playing Help, Association Croquet. I cant seem to leave a link to it.
Hi there, I use an open-source 3D modeling software called Blender. Glad you are finding the vids useful...
"Two balls together is as good as a load"
Very Nice work John
Thanks Murray!
Thank you hazelnut6399. Your kind comments make the job for me rewarding. While being on incidental topics which interest me, I do also hope they genuinely help the game along. It's great to have your feedback, thank you.
John has set the gold standard for Association Croquet coaching animations. Beneficial for coaches and players alike. As a player I appreciate all the expertise involved and call on other players to support John so he can continue making these videos freely available to everyone. Well done👏
Thanks John. Would be improved, in my opinion, by showing the roquet on blue and how close you need to be, and that you don't need to get behind blue but just somewhere close to it and that the croquet shot on blue is going to do the work of getting it into the middle hoop.
I am a fairly new AC player and this really is not clear to me. I think a follow through shot-by-shot animation of how the plan would be executed would be really helpful. I cannot get the plan from the explanation given.
Thank you for your comments. As a quick fix I have changed the wording in the explanation above. Hopefully it should be clearer now that Red is the striker ball, and it is planning on how to get to Hoop 2, and set the lawn for further hoops.
@@johnhutchison6144 Thanks for taking my comments into account. I did get the plan once I realised that red was the striker ball. My initial, wrong guess was that black was the striker ball, maybe because blue was being used as a pioneer to hoop two and the logic worked backwards from there. Now that I get some of the plan it is a helpful example. I have found the other videos in the series helpful, particularly the one on the stroke set which gave hand positions on the mallet. Thanks for doing these. Richard (member at G&GCC playing AC since January. AC Handicap 20). I have watched the video again. At my stage of learning and development as a player, the explanation is still too truncated for a beginner at my level to fully grasp. You miss out the step of rushing yellow as the reception ball after hoop 1 to get a croquet shot that will be a drive (?) to leave yellow at 3 and the red with a rush on black to get it behind blue, then some kind of croquet shot to get red onto a rush line on blue that will allow to rush blue in front of hoop 2 (leaving black in a place unspecified (but presumably as pivot so that blue can go to hoop 4? At least I guess that's the plan. If the plan is to leave black on the boundary then I think it is not a great plan. I would want to give thought as to how to get black back to a pivot ball position so that I can drive blue to hoop and roquet on black to take off to yellow. Thoughts? I think it would be better to leave black nearer the middle and do a take off to get onto the rush line behind blue, i can see that it is easier to get behind blue if black is further over, but it also means that the croquet shot with black will need to get red behind blue and get black back nearer the middle. If this is not helpful to you then please ignore it.
@@richardperkins45 The reason for sending Black right over is to assure a perfect position on Blue. A take off to Blue from any real distance could be risky. The Black ball would be stop shot into the lawn as far as possible....maybe only feet. But this would still be an improvement on where Blue lies now.
Great work Johny 👏
Thanks Benny 😅
Nice video, learnt a lot. Also i really liked the models you used, can you link a source for them?
Too good buddy. Thanks for your extremely well made croquet tutorial videos.
Glad they are of assistance....
Very nice tutorial. Break, Rush, continuation shots, roquets and croquets, runs, escapes. Too good.
Well done John. Another great edition to your list of videos
Thanks Gary! Hope all is well over on the West...;)
Nice, but no mention of pull?
Small steps. Pull certainly affects aiming points. Subject for another vid!

Hi!! I would like to practice strategy. Whats the name of the "program / application" of your video? it seems amazing to have a lawn in your computer! Thanks
Good strategy but very difficult shot.
Really informative. The Triangle concept is very useful.
Thank you. Very clearly explained.
Interested in what graphics program you use to make these videos. Thank you!
Blender 😀
Very nice animations!
I do it all the time, but didn’t really think about it.
Really clear and helpful. Thank you.
Good video Johny 👌
Good video, thanks
In playing the 'croquet' shot we should emphasise that both balls must move. Good vid.
This is also the same path used in Golf-croquet, with the exception of the tie-breaker hoop.
Next , consider the direction needed to get to the next ball and where to position the lead ball.
Nice. But it is not clear who's has the next play.
Red onto yellow is about to play.
@@wnh79 :Yellow onto red seems easier.
@@wnh79 that's really helpful, thank you. That red onto yellow is about to play then makes the diagram clearer. That wasn't clear to me from the explanation given in the video.
I really enjoy your animations. What graphics program do you use?
a Grate thank to u. This is a godd presentation to lern sports terminology..
Great graphics but the musak is more than annoying
Nice, great simple animations for beginner's to view. Different people find different ways to help with accuracy, I find a point in the distance beyond the ball I'm trying to hit and use that as my target.
Yeah nice one...if it works, keep it going...
This is the best graphics demonstration of croquet I've ever seen. Physics seems spot on. Are these hand crafted or did you use a croquet simulation package?
Hi Paul, Yes all hand crafted in Blender. It's an open source 3D modeling package. If you have any topics that you think I should cover please let me know.
