Musical memory of the Johnny Dowd band housegig in West Kirby, Merseyside on 11th March 2024 Jim White said circle the wagons Batten down the hatches Hide the booze and flush your drugs Oh, and don’t forget the matches They rolled into town a day too soon Those Ithaca indie-jocks Heaven is singing with Park in pyjamas Hell- washing Johnny’s socks. I've been meaning to visit my younger brother Conor's grave since we buried him there in 2018, but never managed to get around to it. This was a fun 'pilgrimage', hitching and on public transport, and I decided to join in the birdsong when I got there. I only know the full lyrics of a couple of songs, so for Conor, it was either going to be this or 'Sally McLennane' by the Pogues ;)
The Labyrinth Song; Asaf Avidian

I binge-watched the German series DARK last year and noticed this song in series 3. I really like the lyrics/theme of Theseus & the Minotaur in a psychological sense, and when I stumbled across this series of (presumably AI-generated?) images on Petr Válek's FB page, I thought they'd go well together. (No permission from either artist, but I hope they don't mind)

I binge-watched a German sci-fi series last year called DARK. This song from the last series stuck in my head, so I eventually looked it up and learned it (-ish). I love the lyrics- the Greek myth of Theseus, Ariadne and the Minotaur, interpreted psychologically.

Du ka' dø af det der written by Sonja Hald My cousin Lars from Copenhagen visited last week and suggested I learn a Danish song by Kim Larsen. I got distracted on Spotify and stumbled across the band Sonja Hald (anagram of singer/songwriter Jonas Dahl). I didn’t fancy singing it in Danish don’t quite understand the lyrics, so took the liberty of writing my own ‘inspired by’ version. Shane Clayw...

I understand some written Danish, but don't speak, let alone sing it. So this is a bit outside my comfort zone :) I always liked this song from the album Gas 5, whish our Danish au pair gave us half a century ago. Yikes I'm old!

"Let's be clear: the ukelele is not a beautiful instrument to listen to." I have to contradict!: If you listen to ruclips.net/video/r6BYgBnyDQs/видео.htmlfeature=shared or ruclips.net/video/u6auXngY51U/видео.htmlfeature=shared (but you may skip sth. like the first two minutes, the intro is loong), or even a 3D printed plastic ukulele in the right hands goes well with this singer's voice - ruclips.net/video/QZ2LOMEIntU/видео.htmlfeature=shared I didn't know that Ukulele Anthem before you played it at the JGOM and I really like your rendition! Now please don't insult me having low standards! :)
Haha, vielen Dank, Dom! What about a compromise and changing that to 'my' ukulele... ? Of course proper musicians can make almost anything sound beautiful, but the main function of a uke is to make people SMILE! This song in particular achieves that 😆Enjoy yours.
Dramatic! 😁
Awesome brian
From the horse's mouth 😯 Can't get any better than that!
This, is genius. With Ben Folds and Joe Jackson, it kills, and kills any criticism of Wm Shatner's recording career. And the entire album "Has Been" is this good.
Fantastic... as expected!!!
Aw... Thanks Jim!
Great stuff Brian, emotive and conversational.
Lovely playing, Tor.
Nice cover!
muchas gracias 🙂
THIS MIGHT BE MANU CHAO🔥🔥💯
Haha, not quite, but thanks for the thumbs up 😄 I gather he's releasing a new album next month 😯
Brain, she was introduced as Geraldine Smith.
I know... it's easily done. You just called me 'Brain' ;)
Moving tune, Brian. Missed you at the OM.
Get a life!!! I'm sick of you wannabe "musicians" assaulting my ears! Stay the F off my You Tube Channel!
OH YEAHHH🔥
Beautiful Afghanistan bravo for being one of the few people that has never been colonized and is the graveyard of empires: defeated British 3 times, Russia, and USA!!!🙏❤️👏
👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
Nice one!
In the 1960s and 70s; Thousands of American and European Hippies in search of cheap Hashish and whatever; Were starting their journey in Turkey. Hitchhiking through Iran, Afghanistan, Peshawar, India and on the way to their final destination Kathmandu, Nepal. By the time (some of) them reached Nepal; They were exhausted, wasted, weak and sick. The world’s biggest Hippie Cemetery is in Kathmandu, Nepal. I remember, they didn’t bother anyone and nobody cared; Live and let live. By the way, Hashish was about $ 4.00 a pound in Afghanistan.
Holy shit, this singing is so irritating.
Great stuff, Brian! Thanks for the recipe video😊😊 John & Fern
That was a really great cover, Brian. I thought the song was great and nice to see you collabing with Shane. Nice job both of you.
Cheers, Stefan. Glad you enjoyed 😀
Very nice, still waiting for you to enter the rap game !
Wonderful. Thanks so much for sharing with us Brian!
God bless RUclips recommended hehe
I'm Ishtiaq Ahmed from Peshawar Pakistan, neighbouring city of Afghanistan.
Great video
Just seen this Mr L, must have missed it on the JGC, as wondered how the visit went. Sounding good and a great craic as well !
Pinnacle of my brief guitar career 🤣. I tagged it (and some more) at the bottom of the 1-eyed-Jesus thread 😉
Nice guitar work, Brian, it's like a slow blues Clapton riff. That video is wild.
Cheers, Jason :) the guitar work is my good friend Chris. Hard to believe the vid is a century old!
It would be appropriate to play Afghan music and there is plenty of good choice. Come on!!
Hmm… I would agree with you if these videos were intended for anything other than my personal pleasure and that of family and friends. I make them public, as there might be others who derive some enjoyment from them. Why not download the video, set it to some appropriate Afghani music and share it yourself? I’d be genuinely interested in the results. Cheers
Muito bom!! Saudações do Brasil!!
muito obrigado!
Nice family colab Mr L. Not one I know but loved the melancholy feel and vibe, plus thought promoting vid. Nice one.
Cheers, Toby. much appreciated. I'm standing on their shoulders ;)
"I was in love witha spy ...now I just need a place to hide...Hitchhiker" Woahhhh....interesting! Nice solo, btw!
Planning my next hitchhiking trip as I type! ;)
❤ this song. 👍
“Aces up your sleeve”??? No wonder I never managed to win… Sounds great!!
Very fun way to generate a beat, i would love to see you expand on this concept. Wintergatan has been working on something called the Marble Machine X for a few years now which is a kinetic marble based music box / machine. You may be interested if you havent heard of him yet. Great video!
126 views, I feel like I'm in on the ground floor of something important here.
Interesting contraption you made there
On my break-up playlist.
I hope you don't have to listen to it much 🤣
Awesome!
Hey Alexey, thanks very much!
I got to know this version from a radio show in berlin that called itself "Blue Moon of musical crimes" and the used that as intro and outro for a 2 hours show about the weirdest stuff they got recommended or found in thrift stores at the turn of the millenium. For me this is art, bautiful weird shit.
That's far the best version ever, in particular regarding the video😊
Aw, thanks Jim. Very kind. I must try to make more of the wkac Fridays this year 😉
What a wonderful tribute to your mum. Very well done Brian x
А немного позже, ссср напал на Афганистал и в течении 8 лет убивал афганский народ, приблизительно более миллиона. Сейчас страдает Украина.
This version is just… so… on edge… deviant… & anomalous. My mind… blown! Mr. William Sharner singing… COMMON PEOPLE… in a very UN-COMMON way… I am a big fan of Pulp’s version but just not sure what to think about this version… in “Captain Kirk” voice. Respect to Mr. Sharner for taking a swing at this… but can THE Mr. Shatner relate enough to “Common People” to pull this off? 😂 Then again, that just may be the perfectly brilliant & quirky joke to offset the snarky original. Computing… Glitch, Glitch, GLITCH…
Happy VERY belated birthday Rogier!
Thank you so much! 😀
How cool ... thank you very much I enjoy listening to your music more and more often thanks to Brian.... Greetings,Rogier
Excellent thought provoking composition Mr L. Nicely done sir ! 🚻
I've always wanted this at my funeral. Great taste Brian and good job.
Garfield is baaaack! 😄 Cheers, mate. Are you still playing? You should drop in and say hello in the 'new' community 🙂

Went through in 1976, I was sitting here thinking he has gone through the wrong way, then checked the title again, not a bad memory for a 10 year old I thought! Very fortunate to have a film of it, thanks Brian.
I rode this journey in autumn 1964 on my Vespa motor scooter. It’s called a PASS but it’s nearly all downhill, a fact important to me because my scooter was in considerable need of ignition points not available in Afghanistan.
