Coloured people in South Africa are mixed race descendants of the Khoisan. The Khoisan is one of the oldest tribes in all of Africa, and before what is known as the "Bantu migration" wherein the Bantu tribes which dominate Southern Africa today migrated to the Southern Africa from Central and West Africa, the Khoisan owned all countries in the Southern region of Africa, known as Southern Africa. In the 1600's the Dutch brought slaves from Malaysia, Indonesia, Madagascar, Mozambique, Angola, and East Africa to South Africa. These slaves who at some point became free people intermixed with each other, with the Dutch, as well as WITH THE KHOISAN, and produced offspring. THAT OFFSPRING WAS LABELED AS COLOURED. This new group was then intentionally kept separate from the Bantu(black) groups in South Africa. Over time they married and reproduced amongst each other, and developed a completely new identity and culture. They also speak a language known as Afrikaans, which is essentially Dutch mixed with indigenous African languages, and because they have been mixed so many times THE COLOURED PEOPLE OF SOUTH AFRICA ARE THE MOST GENETICALLY DIVERSE GROUP OF PEOPLE ON THE PLANET. Thus most coloured people come from mixed people who come from other mixed people and it goes back many generations to the days of slavery, and ultimately to the Khoisan tribe. This is why it makes no sense to try to label Tyla or any other coloured person as just black. It is also highly offensive to actual black people in South Africa who are actually black, belong to actual black tribes, speak actual black tribal languages, and have actual black tribal customs and cultures developed over hundreds of years.

I commend your interest in learning about South African culture and the deliberate effort to be accurate. It is highly appreciated. Most of what you said is factual expect for a few things that I have listed below: 1. The Amapiano music genre is exclusively South African. Not Kenyan. Actually Tyla is considered an Amapiano artist since she is South African, so that is what she represents, but her music is not 100 percent pure Amapiano. It is basically her own spin on the Amapiano genre which she then labeled Popiano, since it is a fusion of Amapiano and pop music. If you want to hear the Amapiano in it's pure form you'll get that from other South African artists. 2. Amapiano is not a sub set of Afrobeats. It is a genre that is completely separate and distinct from Afrobeats. 3. Tyla does not have an Indian accent, nor an Indian influenced accent. She has a coloured accent. Particularly the accent of coloured people from Johannesburg(Joburg), which is where Tyla is from in South Africa. Also, Tyla has never been to India, and she speaks no Indian language. How can she have an Indian accent when she speaks no Indian accent as her mother tongue? 4. There is more to being coloured than just being mixed. Trevor Noah is mixed. Tyla is both multi generationally mixed, and coloured. She belongs to the coloured culture while Trevor Noah doesn't, though he is also mixed. Referring to Tyla as just mixed strips her of her coloured culture which is what her accent, mannerisms, and identity is rooted in.

" we might see race in a more severe way then other countries" Do your research on race in south Africa you'll see if we see it as severe as you do or not. But then again, we experience race in different ways so it wont be surprising if we see it on different ways too just its uncalled for someone else to say I don't see it as server as they do not knowing my history in the country with regards to race.

The obvious reason people find her Uppidy is she said she wasn't black and it sounded to the American ear that 'this African thinks she's too good to be black'. Meanwhile she isn't black. What surprised me most was people asking her to identify as black. Asking someone to pass as black is a crazy request. African people are spiritually merged with their heritage and identity. People like to assume that colored just means biracial or mixed, so it is not a big deal to just say you are black. It does not mean that. Trevor Noah is Biracial and was raised by black women in a black area. He doesn't mind being called black because he has always seen himself as black. Tyla is not Biracial. She has a culture with unique cuisine, pigeon dialect, music etc. It is a people. A people that are as much a minority as the whites in South Africa. So not only were they discriminated against they also were the minority. People see it as embracing blackness, not considering that is eliminating her true self. I am a Xhosa man. Most South Africans identify with their tribes. However we embrace being black. That is because we are. So if I go to New York I am not going to say I am Xhosa, I am just going to say I am black. It does not erase my identity. However for a non-black person, calling yourself black means you are not aligned with who you are. It is so confusing that Americans are so aware how important being identified correctly is for Trans people, so much so that they will call a biological male a women. Yet don't understand the psychological effects being stripped of your blackness, colouredness, asianess etc can have. Slavers knew to strip slaves all over the world of their culture and heritage because they knew it was vitally important to us. The second thing that surprised me is that young African women bear this expectation of having quiet, barefooted, soft-spoken, with head down and can't believe they are out of the village ahh attitudes. If they don't it is not received well. However the surprising thing is it isn't white people that have this expectation. Which is saddening. To let non-africans know- most African women are headstrong, bubbly, smiling, confident...not just confident, but loud about being confident.

People forget to mention that coloured people in south Africa did not choose to identify as coloured but were enforced by apartheid racial classification during apartheid referring to anyone not white or of the black Bantu tribes, which effectively largely meant people of colour. If you cared to do research about South African history you would have out that coloured are people that come from different ethnic groups which are Asian, Indian Khoisan & etc because cape town was the herb where salve bought to after being imported too. For many years as South Africans we were separated from each other by apartheid law. The coloured community has their culture, beliefs, language that they created on their own in that era, so it would have been fair when the apartheid era was over for the government to say "okay now you black". Coloured were the most victimized people in apartheid time in my opinion, they have been through a lot not to mention some of them still don't know their ethical background.

This video is very misinformed! As a South African I have it up to the neck with people making videos without educating themselves on South African history and culture. Please educate yourself!!! Google doesn't do our country Justice... Furthermore you mentioning collaborations with Nigerian artists, Africa is a continent and in South Africa we have many many artists that are extremely talented! Shekinah and Mahwoo etc Educate yourself on South African artists. Also Nigerian people and South African people are culturally different.

First off, I clicked this video because I'm obsessed with Tyla- I think she's very talented, I think she deserves all the success that's she's putting in the work for and I'm here for it. I tend to stay out of the gossip and drama at the celebrity level because I just don't care that much. I watched this video because I wanted some perspective given how much I've seen of the sh*t she's been getting, and I just wanted to say you did an exceptional job of presenting all of it, and all the examples and citations you gave made it all the more compelling. About a third of the way through the video I realised that the issues you were discussing, initially framed as how they pertain to Tyla, were actually [some of] the bigger issues that plague this country; specifically division by race, gender and identity. Acknowledging the privilege I have as an American white male in not having to worry about being misidentified or having my traditions ignored or suppressed, I just wanted to tell you that I thought this video and your thoughts were extremely well put together and that you did a very good job of highlighting a lot of what's wrong here in America, while using Tyla's controversy as the foot in the door. Subscribing, and looking forward to watching your other content. Cheers :)

I felt Trouble In Paradise was very authentic to her. Y'all are dragging it. Like get over it. This is about sex being taboo & people not liking raw r&b & wanting a more digestible alternative music from black women that isn't overtly "BLACK". The code words are "doing too much" & "alternative music" & "experimental" & "quirky" & "ghetto" & "cosplaying" as if overtly black art is just a character anyone can put on for entertainment. Like What is ghetto about Chloe's music? That she talks about sex? Lmao, I'll wait. If you don't like certain traditionally black genres of music, then say that & move on. She is catching stray bullets being an example of someone going from someone more palatable & alternative to overtly "black af". Chloe is killing the game. She's not trying to prove she isn't Halle.? Please. If anything, Halle has yet to evolve her sound & mature in her own way and her own right like her older sister has. Look in the mirror, people. She doesn't need to do the inner work, thats yall. Yall are doing the utmost telling other people what they need to be doing & telling them what's "authentic" to them. This is not tea 😂 Yall want it to be tea so bad. Criticizing her imperfect branding? Not using her full vocal ability? Talking about sex? 😂 Yall are funny Its simple: yall want her to change so you can be more comfortable. End of story.

The trouble is with the type of music she puts out the over sexual vibe, her personality is boring. If she was a pop girly with her personality she wouldn’t be considered boring. Her type of music doesn’t fit with her actual vibe, so she comes across as boring. And you can’t be considered boring and make music that makes it seem like you’re this fun sexual girl that’s drinking, clubbing and f**king. But when ppl look you up there’s nothing interesting. Her music makes her seem like she’s living like Megan thee stallion. But I’m happy she’s protecting herself because I wouldn’t want her to go through what Meg did. Essentially, she needs to pivot to being a Clean pop star like Olivia Rodrigo or something

I won’t talk about Meghan because I don’t like the way she becomes a « black woman » only when it arranges her, but Thank you for trying to be objective on the analysis of Harry. Having a background on crisis management, all I can see is how POWERFUL the Establishment’s PR team and media Truly is. They completely manipulated the public’s opinion by saying they’re victimising themselves, they are narcissists etc. You’ll see people and channels (I think some of them are hired) who have literally built their « career » by insulting and slandering his name. ALL they do on RUclips is « analysing their behaviours ». Just because he’s privileged doesn’t mean he’s can’t talk about his feelings and perception of things. He’s not the 1st royal in history or the 1st celebrity who has done so. Why did people sympathise with them and not depict them as « narcissist attention seekers »??? TLDR: YALL DONT WANT CHLÖE X HALLE TO BE AUTHENTIC. YALL WANT THEM TO REMAIN AUTHENTIC TO THE PERCEPTION YALL HAVE OF THEM AND WHEN THEY DONT CONFORM TO THAT, IT BOTHERS YALL. The sex appeal discourse and the trying too hard discourse is a distraction from the actual music. The "boring" discourse is a distraction from the actual music. None of these ppl actually have anything legit to say about the actual music. Idgaf about anything else that has nothing to do with their music. Nothing they do with their music or their stage presence gives forced. Ppl call anything "forced" that isn't executed in a lazy manner. Ppl act like they want real performers when the ones they go up for, are just lazy. The problem with music in this day and age, is the focus is not on the music. The music has no room to breathe. it's become about everything else. There's no such thing as too goofy and nerdy to be sexy. Ppl can be goofy and sexy and conscious and ratchet and weird and cool. And it really is as simple as that. And if ppl r gonna make an argument around "authenticity", there are plenty of artists in the industry that sell yall music they themselves do not believe in and would never listen to. But because they did such a good job at selling that product, no one thought for a second about whether or not a cerrain song, album, sound, archetype or aesthetic was actually authentic to them. No one ever makes discourse out of that. No one ever allows that to dominate conversation constantly. But Thats why ppl get so offended by Doja Cat calling her pop music "cash grabs". Thats why ppl r triggered by normani saying she hated Motivation. Yall can say anything and everything about chlöe x halle but what yall cant say is that they dont stand ten toes behind everything they do musically. Because they do. Chlöe has stood ten toes behind Have Mercy and Treat Me from the very beginning. Most artists dont stand behind their own work but yall act like see them as "more authentic" simply because it reflects your personal taste lol Ppl dont like true authenticity. They like "authenticity" packaged as marketable. Packaged as top charting. Packaged as accolades worthy. Packaged as mainstream. Packaged as acceptable. Packaged as perfection. Yall dont want REAL AUTHENTICITY. Yall dont want artists doing music just because its funa dn its what THEY want or its how they choose to express themselves. Yall dont like TRUE authenticity. Yall like authenticity when that authentic is limited to LIKEABLE and limited to the PERCEPTION that you have of a person. Yall need to challenge your own ideas of how you perceive "authenticity". Ppl who can't understand that are ppl who cannot separate limited perception and authenticity. Chlöe's music is absolutely authentic. Chlöe's music is true to her. Sure a certain type of music may fit her better. But just because a certain type of music FITS someone according to your limited perception of them, doesn't mean it is true to who she is. Chlöe is freaky. Chlöe is nerdy. Chlöe is ratchet. Chlöe is conscious. Chlöe is funny. Chlöe is cool. Chlöe is fun at times. Chlöe is boring at times. She deserves to be able to express all of those things. I just think these girls are being pushed by the gp to fit into a musical archetype that limits their expression and they just aren't interested in that. I just think that these ladies just want to make the type of music that THEY would wanna listen to. It's really as simple as that. Chlöe x Halle cannot be ungodly hour for the rest of their lives. They have to evolve at some point. And that is ok.

Quirky personalities like those would have lit TikTok ablaze but it would probably wouldn’t have done much for their careers in the sense of sales or the progression of their Art.
