Добавлен 30 окт 2019
Socratica FX teaches you our behind-the-scenes secrets of video editing. We're starting with Houdini. We'll take an exploratory approach-playing around with all the different nodes, and trying to build interesting & challenging models and simulations. Houdini can be intimidating at first, but with a little bit of experimentation, the complexity starts to dissolve and a powerful and simple tool emerges. You will learn to love Houdini as much as we do!
Macros + Images in Fusion ← DaVinci Resolve ← Socratica
Creating Macros in Fusion with bundled images and thumbnails are a great way to take your production toolkit to the next level. In this lesson, we'll create a simple macro and focus on how to modify the Setting file so that the bundle image will appear, and create a thumbnail so that the title will be nice and snazzy in the Effects menu of the Edit & Cut pages.

The Pick Whip tool in DaVinci Resolve is a way to connect one node's property in Fusion to another nodes property. In this lesson, we'll create a Fusion macro that generates a Japanese flag. We'll use the Custom Tool node as a way to build a customizable user interface for our macro, and then use the pick whip tool to ensure the size, aspect ratio, etc. all change correctly. #blackmagicdesign #...

MaterialX is an open standard for defining materials for 3D graphics. It was created by Industrial Light and Magic (ILM) in 2012, and open sourced in 2017. When SideFX added Solaris to Houdini, they also included support for MaterialX. If you want to use the Karma XPU renderer in Houdini, you will definitely need to learn how to use MaterialX. #Houdini #MaterialX #Socratica

Macros with Custom Controls in DaVinci Resolve
Просмотров 3,3 тыс.Год назад
When you create a macro in DaVinci Resolve, you will usually want to create your own custom controls. This, when used with expressions, give you tremendous creative control. In this lesson, we'll show you how to create a custom control, use it to drive other node's parameters, and deploy it so it will appear in the Effects panel of Resolve. #davinciresolve #socratica #macros #blackmagicdesign
Delta Keyer vs Ultra Keyer ← DaVinci Resolve ← Socratica
Просмотров 26 тыс.Год назад
DaVinci Resolve has multiple keyers to choose from. Two of the most popular are the Ultra Keyer and the Delta Keyer. In this video, we'll compare these two keying nodes in Fusion. We'll show how with just a few extra seconds of filming, you can save a lot of time in keying by using the delta keyer with a "clean plate" image. #davinciresolve #greenscreeneffects #socratica #chromakey

CHOPs, A Comprehensive Introduction ← Houdini
Просмотров 5 тыс.Год назад
In Houdini, CHOPs - or "Channel Operators" - are a way to generate sequences of numbers and vectors independently of geometry. They are an old and mysterious part of Houdini which have an unfair reputation for being difficult. In this video, we'll give you a solid introduction to CHOPs, and show you how to create channels of data using Python, VEX, or CHOPs. #houdini #chops #vfx #socratica

Scripting features in DaVinci Resolve allow you to automate a lot of repetitive tasks, integrate with backend pipelines, and communicate with other software. Using Python 3, Python 2, or Lua, you can create and run scripts - both inside and outside of Resolve - to perform any number of tasks! In this video we will give you a quick introduction to the scripting console. We'll introduce the core ...
Generators & Node Groups in Davinci Resolve
Просмотров 2,6 тыс.Год назад
One way to create a custom template in Davinci Resolve is by creating a group of nodes in Fusion, exporting this as a setting file, and then putting a copy of this file in the right folder. In this lesson we'll show you how to do this, but we'll also talk about ways that do NOT work. This will help clarify the need for creating a group instead of exporting a single node or collection of nodes i...

Thanks for the tut. You can actually rename the controls in the macro creator as well.
very useful and easy to understand information, thank you
I think once you have the custom tool config settings to where you want with checkboxes you need, you can save it as the default.
Very helpful, thanks.
Hello, pretty cool. You talked about how to use the "playground" to learn about scripting, then you mentioned extrnal scripts, question: is it straightforward how to run the extrenal script and make davinci accept its instructions?
thank you.
You are a great content creator, keep up with great work!
This one helped me today while I was trying to rewrite/re-suse some Macros I made. Thank you! I was stuck and this got me unstuck.
I do a lot of greenscreen and don’t always shoot it. Sometimes footage arrives and I haven’t got a clean plate AND often the camera op will change lighting or exposure to get a “better” clean plate. At those times I find it useful to use the Ultra Keyes and adjust the threshold. Clean plates are troublesome in long form shows with different setups. I’ve had camera ops just shoot one (“here’s a shot of my screen”) as if we just wanted a sample. If you’re shooting just the one shot then, sure, the clean plate is easy.
it is title on the black screen. how to install such title in setting file to the timeframe with different cuts video files?
very helpful, nice video!
oh.... thank you
It's possible to expand a macro already made in a fusion composition? I downloaded some title templates for davinci but I would love to edit deeply the title to insert for instance the company logo on the fusion animation. But I can notice in the fusion tab just the marco, so I can't change nothing than the parameters allowed from the macro creator. How can I do? How can I expand a macro on the original nodes of fusion? Thank you, very good explaination on your video!
Nice, Thanks
very nice tutorial and so much detailed in explanation.. great work.. keep it up !
Amazing. I saved a bunch of my custom animations as Macro Setting instead of Fusion Comps and had no idea how to edit them lol
I have searched for so long for this solution. Thank you
why cant i put setting files to fusion, its been 2 days trying to figure out why cant i put it can u please help
This video is enormously helpful! Thank you for making such a clear, and easy-to-follow tutorial.
great information
this is really helpful to understand the mtlx files, as you mentioned the code is different when we use the houdini to export and the downloaded files are having the different format of code, which is causing issue when I take it to unreal, in maya it just works fine, but I need it in unreal, is there any way to export in same format of the downloaded mtlx code or any mtlx editor to rewrite the code as same, Please let me know if there is any way Thanks in advance
This is gold. Thank you for a great video!
Great video, thank you
Is it true that only the Studio version can use external scripting?
Is there a way to make a script to automate taking a slice from a clip, turning it into a freeze frame, moving it up one layer and changing duration to one second? I don't see the methods I'd need. I see one for changing the clip color, which I'll need, but not much else to manipulate a clip. Am I missing an amazing 'DoItAll' command somewhere? Nothing I found in a Google search or in the script manual seems to allow for it. In fact, it seems that scripting doesn't do much I'd consider 'fun' and helpful for basic video editing. So far, it seems that learning AutoHotKey to string together a sequence of keystrokes into a macro is about the best that Resolve can support. Hoping I'm wrong... 🫤
Thanks for the video. Speaking of terrible documentation. To this day I can't figure out how to actually add expressions to an input of a tool. There is no AddExpression or so on the objects themselves. I am using the console tool with it's inbuild Help() function to see what methods are attached to the classes. For an EllipseMask for example I only found AddModifier though. Ok I can add it. But how do I access it after? How do the ids look like for modifiers that I can use? No beep. They really don't want to give us too much power
You, kind sir, are amazing! Thank you!!
Am I lucky enough to hear back from someone that this video goes over time slicing in chops?
Good video. I am familiar with the Delta Keyer and was curious about the Ultra Keyer. I will stay with the Delta Keyer. One thing I do when I get to the threshold stage of my key is to slide the monitor gamma controls to make my viewer display quite a severe image of the background or foreground so I only use just enough threshold and don’t start losing detail like fine hair or transparency. I often put a noise reduction node before the Keyer and refrain at the end, if necessary.
Thanks you so muche !!!
Spot on. Thanks so much for sharing method 3 -- around 15:49 as someone posted below. I've spent countless hours tinkering with the Breath Control module over the years, and now I have a better starting point. Keep it up 👊
you know you are cooked when a video edting apps tutorial makes you download visual studio
Perfect explanation, thanks
I found this video very useful and solved many of my problems, great! However, there are some other problems I still cannot figure out. If I directly group the nodes with Ctrl+G, I cannot specify parameters for the group. If I make them a macro, as this video shows, I can specify parameters, however after importing the macro in the Fusion, they are displayed as one node, which cannot be expanded to edit. However, sample templates that Davinci Resolve itself provides, when imported, they are represented as a group, which has both parameters and also can be expanded. How can I achieve that? (Actually I just want to make a group show some parameters to control its inner nodes. But I cannot achieve that.)
Your channel has been so helpful, thank you! I have an issue with my macros and can’t figure out how to fix it. Let’s say I have a rectangle that starts at zoom size 0.25 and then grows to 0.5 over 10 frames using a key frame in a transform node. When I export the macro I may want to give the user control of the final zoom size at the 10 second key frame point, but I don’t want them to have control of the 0.25 starting zoom size. Currently when I export a macro with this zoom control available, any changes made in the inspector will instead Zoom the start point and then return to the 0.5 zoom key frame point, 10 frames into the effect. How can I do this please? Any advice would be very much appreciated. Best wishes. Joel.
Best foundation videos I've seen, bar none. Without exception, I never felt lost or in a situation I needed to ask you a why question. This is almost unavoidable with other mentors. I truly wish you would continue teaching all things Houdini, because without the founadtions like these you provide, learning Houdini often feels like jumping out of a plane with half a parachute. I never feel like that in your videos. THANK YOU :)
Your thoroughness is inspiring. Thank you for your attention to detail while not overlooking the fundamental principles. You’re a great educator!
Brilliant! Thanks you.
up to 9 minutes of the video and you won a new subscriber!!! well done!! nice job!!
Thanks, very well explained. I wonder if there is a way to add a new folder "mystuff" in the Toolbox.
This is SUPER useful. Having run the Find Similar, one point that's worth mentioning is you can quickly go through all the found breaths and extend or shorten the selections to make them more accurate. RX11 doesn't remove the other selections when you're adjusting just one. Now that makes it a LOT faster and with 10 hours of audio to attenuate breaths in, this is one happy puppy! Thanks so much for the video!
this is the best video about bc plugin rly
Extremely well presented, thank you. Subscribed.
Thank your video. I would be interested to see how you can edit a macro in Visual Studio. I created a setting file that permits the end user to modify three attributes of 18 media elements but forgot to include two other media elements. It would be interesting to see how I could add these in the editor rather than having to start all over saving the macro. Thanks.
You can create a MaterialX compound nodegraph in Houdini 20 by selecting the materialX nodes that you want grouped together and RMB "actions>collapse to subnet"
Perfect Video! Thanks a lot!
That exactactly what I was looking for. I wish I would give 100 upvotes for this. My idea is much more complicated than a frame and involve timstampts relative to start end end of a clip but at least I know where to start. Many thanks!
Yeah, great work! 🎉
can you create a subtitle animation and use as preset file
