Evolution of the UT–Oak Ridge partnership
Lee Riedinger, Emeritus Professor of Physics at the University of Tennessee and Emeritus Director of the Bredesen Center
Abstract
In 1940 Oak Ridge did not exist and the University of Tennessee had no Ph.D. programs. Much has changed in the last 80 years as UT and the federal facilities in Oak Ridge have grown enormously, and in many examples, jointly. The UT partnership with Oak Ridge National Laboratory is unique in the country. I will present highlights of the history of the UT partnership with ORNL and the Oak Ridge Y-12 National Security Complex, as well as insights on the benefits that have come to each institution. This topic is explored in detail in a new book released this summer...

Mark Champion, Project Director for the Proton Power Upgrade, Neutron Sciences Directorate, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Abstract: The Proton Power Upgrade project at the Spallation Neutron Source (SNS) at Oak Ridge National Laboratory will increase the proton beam power capability from 1.4 to 2.8 MW. Upon completion in early 2025, 2 MW of beam power will be available for neutron production at...
Toward Closed-loop Circularity of Plastics by Chemical Upcycling
Просмотров 503 месяца назад
Abstract Over 400 million tons of solid plastics are globally produced annually, but only ~9% of the plastics used in the United States are currently recycled domestically. That means nearly 90% of our waste plastic is buried in American landfills or incinerated at commercial facilities that emit climate-altering greenhouse gases and airborne toxins. A foundation of a circular economy is closed...

Bob Bolton, Deputy of Operations for the Next-Generation Ecosystem Experiments in the Arctic (NGEE Arctic) Project, Oak Ridge National Laboratory Abstract The Arctic, including Alaska, is currently experiencing an unprecedented degree of environmental change, warming at a pace three to four times faster than the rest of the Earth. This trend is expected to continue through the end of the centur...
Structure-based Antiviral Drug Discovery

Abstract New therapeutics are needed to combat emerging viral diseases. In this presentation, I will discuss efforts led by ORNL to design covalent inhibitors that target the papain-like protease (PLpro) of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes the COVID-19 disease. Proteases are enzymes that break down polypeptides - compounds consisting of two or more amino acids linked in a chain. PLpro cuts vir...
Leveraging High-Resolution Laser Spectroscopy in Bioengineering, Biomass, and the Environment

Abstract A broad suite of laser-based techniques can be used to characterize and better understand changes in biological and environmental matrices, such as leaves, shoots, roots and soils. This talk will summarize the past decade of research using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS), a technique complementary to inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry but elegantly simpler in samp...

Abstract Fusion, the process that powers the stars, offers the potential to provide plentiful clean energy here on earth. Realizing this potential presents substantial interrelated physics and engineering challenges. Following substantial progress in scientific understanding, together with important technology developments, the US has embarked on a bold decadal vision in fusion research, with a...
Past and Present ORNL Successes in Separation Science and Technology

Abstract Oak Ridge National Laboratory started as dual experiments in neutron science and separation science. Could plutonium be separated and purified from neutron-irradiated natural uranium at gram scale? To this day, ORNL stands as a global powerhouse in both neutron and separation science, having further diversified its innovations across the landscape of energy-related science and technolo...

Synthetic Biology For Production of Sustainable Fuels And Chemicals From Renewable Or Waste Carbon
Просмотров 116Год назад
Abstract: Climate change mitigation will require the replacement of fossil fuels and chemicals with sustainable ones. Synthetic biology can be used to create microorganisms that produce sustainable replacements for these fuels and chemicals from renewable feedstocks, but challenges remain. Some microbes are able to grow on difficult-to-eat feedstocks like carbon dioxide, plant biomass, and plas...

50 years late on all of this. Can you imagine where the world would be if they had NOT fired Alvin and given oak ridge money to solve the materials problem and fine tune the fuel/coolant reactor specifications? Fukushima and Chernobyl avoided? Maybe? 80% of electricity carbon free?

We would live in a radically different world, far less CO2 in the Atmosphere, less war over ressources for sure.

Unlike this MIT professor I do NOT wish for high temperature gas but super critical co2. Seems to me to be much lower unit time cost for cheaper electricity and process heat. These MIT people don't seem to care about raising people's living standard world wide.

Thanks for the video, I have some questions I’d like to ask. Isn’t FLiBe in itself a good moderator? I ask because I noticed that both lithium and beryllium are “lower z” than carbon, but the old MSRE video I saw showed a graphite moderator in the core. Also, could colloidal carbon suspended in the fuel salt act as a moderator? It sounds like it could handle radiation damage better than solid graphite. Has anybody ever entertained that idea before? And, of the possible fuel salt combinations you showed, I noticed that beryllium was substituted out of many of them, but lithium still composed a lot of the fuel salts. Why is that? Is it a toxicity issue? Does lithium have benefits over beryllium? And what benefits does beryllium have?

Alameda should instantly move to molten salt thorium fission reactors and lithium enrichment. The work for these money eaters should be to be working on the chemical processes to keep the molten salt clean from reaction products for medical and reactor utility.

Since Oak Ridge has such a massive experience with centrifuge enrichment of u238 to u235 imagine how much easier it would be to enrich li6 to li7. You would think it would easily produce tons of li7 for fission reactors like molten salt and tons of li6 for fusion reactors and the bombs they seem to focus on. I have no interest in the destruction of humanity with abominations of desecration but I do have sincere interest in lithium 7 for fission reactors and keeping the plants clean which with tritium you will never do no matter how good you are.
