None of those N&W pushers appear to be be Tier 4 compliant.🤣
Chugger Locomotive the Train 6:50 [train whistle] 6:34 [train chugging] 34:25 [train chugging]
11:27 Norfolk and Western Narrator: Built through the rugged or West Virginia, the Norfolk and Western requires some powerful locomotives. The N&W has among the world's largest carriers of coal. In 1951, the N&W hauled almost 53 million tons of it. Home design coal burning articulateds and mallets provided the image remembered today is a 1200 series articulated 1218. 11:55 [train whistle] 11:58 Also famous were the Y6 series of mallets and the most well-known were the Y6Bs. A common site through the West Virginia mountains were the heavy coal trains usually powered by two engines on front and one tailing as a pusher at the rear. The Y6s had such refinements as cast steel loco beds with integrally cast cylinders. All these engines were equipped with rolling bearings and those manufactured as late as 1948, were also equipped with boosters.
5:40 The railroad's premier heavy tonnage hauler was the 2-8-8-2 Y6 class locomotive. This basic mallet type was originally conceived by the N&W and then adopted by the United States Railroad Administration.
0:19 [♪♪ Jazz Music Theme] Narrator: By the early and mid-50s, the steam locomotive was reminiscent of some prehistoric monster able to cope with a tide of evolution.
Chugger Locomotive the Train 2:57 [train whistle] 25:30 [train chugging]
So much vintage railroading footage. I loved seeing the action of poling. Had read about it, but never seen it.
7:31 [train whistle] 7:32 [train chugging]
Nope but 302 is running in it's reading 2102 form
Am I the only one who likes the whistle at 34:38?
In some of the 1960 video footage #4 looks like it’s painted red.
It was. That was the color of paint they had in the shop at the time. Undoubtedly the same paint they used on the mill buildings and other rolling stock. As everything was on a "run to failure" track by that time, they saw no need to buy more "engine black". They were just keeping things in good enough repair to stay operational.
EXCELLENT FOOTAGE! THANK YOU FOR SHARING IT WITH ALL OF US!!!!
Good to see the yellowstone again! Last seen in 1961.
Good footage, but the narrator was wrong on a lot he said. I don’t know how it’s possible to confuse a 4-6-4 for a U-1-F, or a royal Hudson for a 4-6-2
So glad we included the extra ten minutes of never before seen nothing at the end!😂
This is great. And they just finished rebuilding the line to Durbin last year!
Jerry has unknowingly become a historian.👍
27:46 Canadian National 4-8-2 Locomotive 6060 A 6060 class 4-8-4 known as a bullet nosed Betsy heads past the camera. Those are mail storage cars on a front end.
7:29 [train chugging] 26:44 [train chugging] 33:40 [train chugging] 53:26 [train chugging]
I got to see Dale Mckormick and the 4449 come thru Santa Barbara back in the 70's going 90 mph. Most impressive machine I've ever seen ❤

Union Pacific Railroad Steam Locomotives 4-8-8-4 Big Boy Locomotive 4006 8:49 [train chugging] 23:18 Kevin Michael Richardson: And 4-8-8-4 Big Boys enjoyed productive careers hauling millions of tons of freight for up to 20 years. 23:26 [train chugging] 4-6-6-4 Challenger Locomotive 3985 29:32 Kevin Michael Richardson: The 4-6-6-4 Challenger type engine number 3985 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world. It was reccomissioned and restored in 1981. And while number 3985 is currently being rebuilt. Its toured the country as a public relations ambassador, pulling excursion specials and occasionally working freight trains. 4-8-4 Northern Locomotive 844 32:02 [train whistle] 32:07 [train chugging] 32:10 Kevin Michael Richardson: The U.P Steam Program's other Locomotive is their newly refurbished number 844. And for now, with her sister down for repairs, she's the star of the Union Pacific show. 32:27 This particular 4-8-4 Northern type bears a unique distinction. It's the only steam locomotive on the major railroad that has never been pulled out of active service. The Santa Fe Railroad owned the largest 4-8-4s, but no other individual standard gauge locomotive has been working longer than number 844.
I can’t imagine the noise of a Y Class pushing you up a hill while you ride in a caboose
Just pray the caboose doesn't buckle under the pressure.
@@Nathan93Baker that’s legitimately been a thought that always crosses my mind when I see helpers on the end
This great video should be digitally remastered…….
16:12. Absolutely love watching this. I’m the caretaker of the 31 at the Okefenokee Heritage Center.
7:50 , this engine is now sitting at Cass Railroad in West Virginia waiting a new boiler to be built by the same people who built Heisler number six new boiler Manufacturing of the boiler is supposed to start this year
Doyle McCormack you're my hero! lol
Good to see some DM&IR action in there! Especially D&NE stuff. 28 is my favorite engine. Great video.
My grandfather use to ride these trains when the hauled the logs out..
This is insane. I remember watching this on VHS when I was in elementary school
I did too. Fond memories
Thanks Chris. I love it
Love the sheer power of these steam monsters and the great music moving along with those trains in that era!!!
OMG i wat'ched this as a kid! and when I was like 10 to 11 I went to cass railroad as a kid it was so much fun yea pretty cold but it was fun I"m almost 20 just a few months away
#488 is always been my favorite steam locomotive. 14:38
These old steam locomotives were still in use in America at the same time all the hardware was being developed that would take us to the Moon.....seems like a million years ago. This tape was a great find, and thanks for sharing it with us.
21:20 anyone know what whistle this is?
their are whistle comparisions on yt you can try to compare it to that to those and see which is which if you have the time!
@@koiyujo1543 I’m also interested to know what time this would have been. I assume it would be something different, as the locomotives look more like their pre-tourist forms, and are pulling a logging train.
That would be a Mann's Creek Crosby 3 chime. This scene is during one of the mid 1970's photo excursions.
@@gregpoeppel thanks! good to know.
@@gregpoeppel also mann’s creek does have that higher pitch from a distance when compared to 36:17
My model railroad, the BL&G, would’ve used steam all the way until 1971, when they replaced their last steam engines, J3a Hudsons 5438 and 5450, with a pair of EMD E7 diesels. J3a 5438 managed to survive into preservation, as did 5450, and 5438 was returned to operation for special excursions in 1985. The BL&G currently only has one of their E7 diesels, former-Southern Railway 2920, in operation. The other one, former Southern Railway 2905, was retired in 1992 and put on static display. The BL&G reactivated seven of their original steam engines, including two of their original Baldwin 2-10-0s, three secondhand 4-6-2s of varying designs, Seaboard 0-6-0 #1094, and J3a #5438, for special weekend steam excursions.
Any videos?
There were allot of really awesome steam locomotives all over this country but my all time favorite will always be the Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy.
35:51 36:27 These have been burned in my memory forever. Such a beautiful sound
42:57 I remember this so vividly from my childhood
I think I’ll have to play that train whistle with an angry😡 at 1:26 & 50:14 when i get triggered.
Cool to see a VHS rip of this film!

It's cool seeing pre-Strasburg era footage of 89 and 90 in action.
PRICELESS FOOTAGE ! What a find , thanks for sharing this !!
What is the name of the first song?? I've been trying to find it for a long time.
