Film photography with flash (Portra 800)

Some behind the scenes from a portrait photoshoot I did with the beautiful Nay. Shot on my Canon A1 with Kodak Portra 800 film, using a profoto b10 light for flash. OOPS: You’re supposed to set your shutter speed to 1/60th or slower so the shutter curtains will stay open for exposure, allowing flash to expose full frame. Anything faster and you end up with images where parts of frame are darker...

This is so beautiful, thanks for sharing. I love your collection of backdrop colours too, where do you find them?
Thank you so much for watching! 💛 I got them second hand from Facebook Marketplace
love these vidoes!
Thank you so much!!
Smooth !!! Nice video Ejatu !
Hi Ejatu. The picture you created at 02:55 was haunting. It conveyed a moment equivalent to stage fright that applies to numerous scenarios people find themselves in before they have to do something. A sublime image with lighting to match. Have a good start to your week.
Hi, I really love your work and appreciate the way how you explain it. I'm grateful that you sharing this with us. Thank you. A french fan 💜
Thank you every time! Love sharing the process with you guys 💛
What a great entry into this "flash + natural light in the studio" series, the editing and favourites sections are such a nice addition. But also, the styling in this one is soooo good! Both what he's wearing (really pops with the carnation backdrop) and your intro outfit too.
Thank you so much!! Has been fun experimenting and trusting myself more, hoping to start incorporating additional lighting into my setups going forward. So glad you enjoyed this vid! 💛
Beautiful ❤
I love everything about this, the outfits and the colors super amazing. Will love to see the editing process ❤️
fashion, ate. being black at this old money event, ate. helicopter ride? ate. hair? ate. photography? ate.
this is dope, feels like i’m sat in at a sunny window in a library flipping through archives. love knowing people’s names and stories, even if briefly. this is really what photography is for me - this mode of connection and like putting each other on (esp. as black folk)
You’re amazing, thank you for sharing ❤️
Also great video as always, fren 👏🏼🫡
Great video. So nice to see some classic black and white portraits on film!
Very interesting. Subscribed
I'm sorry...I'm so distracted by his shoelaces. Beautiful photos though.
You’ve helped me out so much with this video thanks!
I am here for my Queen 🙌
Thank you for the support always!!
Once again, your work is excellent, both in educational terms and in your authorial photography. You guide us in a very clear and didactic way on how to produce quality photographic work. It's simple but technically sound, and we can see your talent in directing the model and choosing each element in the composition of the image. As a photographer myself, it is very inspiring to be able to understand the entire process in detail, from conception to the final result of the image. Greetings from Valparaíso, Chile.
So beautifully put, thank you so much for watching each time! Love sharing my process with you all
love these videos 🫶🏾
Thank you!!
The little logo in the corner of the videos are so cute
Cool to see some professional photographer still using film!
One question: Why 35mm and not Mediumformat?
We LOVED watching this ❤📸
Thanks for watching!! Can always count on my Canon A1 🥹❤️
Hey this was great! It was really helpful to see the results you got shooting from creative angles. Beautiful colors too

Ayeee we love a studio shoot video! Hope to see more and can’t wait to photograph in it one of these days 💫 -Sasha
Hi Ejatu. What a lovely shoot that was with, Nae. The full length shots and the outfit she wore were were both wonderful. Plus, the special graduated filter you were using came good on the final shot. When you held up the Portra 800 it reminded that I had nine rolls of film that is twenty five years old in the cupboard :-)) Enjoy the rest of your day.
Thank you so much for watching Colin! Wow love that you've kept those rolls all this time! Keen to know how they've held up!
@@EjatuShaw Hi Ejatu. I tagged you today under a photo I took of the film stock a while ago with some info, only to realise later that because my Insta is private you were not going to get it...what a doughnut! Anyway, there were thirty rolls originally that I gave away to students I met over the years when I remembered I had it. The feedback, from those who remembered to make the right exposure adjustments varied from; loving the flare, to highlights hell, to good with tungsten and things about colour casts. On a side note, I popped into the Wallace Collection yesterday and the blue Roksanda outfit you wore for the self portraits video I just watched reminded me of the gorgeous blue room in there. Eat well, sleep well, and all that stuff.
love this !! Nay a natural ❤🔥❤🔥
Truly! So fun to photograph 🧡
This video is so affirming and validating, and just makes me want to try things! Appreciate you sharing all parts of the process.
Ahh I'm so glad to hear videos like this are helpful! It's okay to be seen trying fr ❤️
another banger vid!!! you should try strobe with medium format next film next! im trying to learn with my rz67 bit difficult though
Thank you so much!! Omg yes that's the next thing I need to brave aha, any tips?
a couple tips: every camera has its own sync speed (not all 60th). also, leaf shutter cameras sync at all their shutter speeds.
Thank you this is very helpful! I'm hoping to try out shooting flash on my RB67, any advice would be amazing!
@@EjatuShaw cameras will often times have a single colored shutter speed on their dial - this indicates the sync speed (or the fastest shutter you can use with the flash). RB67 is a leaf shutter camera, the shutter is in the lens. It's a shutter that is similar to aperture blades. even at its fastest shutter the lens shutter fully opens up which is why you can shoot it with flash at any speed available. the most important thing I've learned in regards to flash is the square inverse law (phenomenon that describes how energy travels of space and time like heat, but in this case apply it to light) if you research this you'll understand how to get deep shadows or how to get shallow shadows simply by moving your lght source closer or further from your subject - and also how to shoot with flash without needing a light meter assuming you know how to estimate your distance etc etc. and one more important thing I learnedwith flash is flash is legit it's own shutter in a photo. it's fun watching you grow as a photographer! love the channel :)
You’ve dropped banger after banger lately
Appreciate you tuning in every time! ❤️
the last shot 🔥 🔥 🔥
Yes love!!!
You said you were under a management company once upon a time ago, how did that come about? What advice could you give to a photographer who isn't backed by a management company and why did you leave said company, Ejatu?
Yes was signed to an agency! They were new at the time and were taking on new talent - like this agency, I've noticed a lot of agencies that reach out have found me via my work posted on instagram - so do keep your socials updated! Being signed to an agency doesn't necessarily guarantee work but it is a helpful way to have your portfolio shown/pitched to brands etc, but super important to find your perfect match
