Had a problem hearing Dr. Blight even at my device's full volume. So I opened the transcript which got me through. I hope that Kentucky Humanities can use a different mic set up so they don't have to hand hold their own microphones! A very worthwhile, educational discussion.

Dr. Blight was my High School 'Civil War I & II' Teacher at Flint Northern H.S. in 1977-78, his last year there, before earning his Master of the Arts in 76 and never looking back..!! It was a joy & honor to be a Student of Mr. Blight, and he reminds me of the character John Keating in 'Dead Poets Society' because he would use unusual & unique teaching methods that were inspired by his belief that he was a participant in that War, and has been reincarnated as a Civil War Teacher, with a mission to share his past life experiences with those desiring to "Listen, Read & LEARN"..!! The annual Spring Field Trip to Gettysburg, PA, to experience the battlefields, monuments & ghosts stories, was the "Highlight of my High School" memories. He loved teaching, respected his students and his students simply adored him. You NEVER skipped his class and Mr Blight's classroom was always "FULL" and I was very fortunate to get a rare seat in 10th grade, as Seniors & Juniors got to pick classes first and usually took them all... Nobody knew it was his 'Last Year' so, again, I was super lucky and I have been a Civil War History Lover my entire life. Thank You Mr. Blight..!!

This is a great conversation. I think Dr. Meachum understates the extent of the anti-slavery movement in Kentucky in the early 1800s. Rev. Carter Tarrant, one of the leading anti-slavery baptist ministers at the time wrote a “history” of the anti-slavery baptist movement in Kentucky. It was written fairly early in this movement so it really isn’t anything close to complete. In it he lists 22 ministers and elders an a number of churches and “associations” which were actively anti-slavery. Interestingly he doesn’t include the anti-slavery church the Lincoln family were members of. There are a lot of things that could mean, but I think Tarrant’s listing wasn’t complete. It still isn’t a broad majority, but the number was large enough for the larger Baptist association to be seriously concerned. This doesn’t include the Methodists who had not yet divided over the issue of slavery but had started as an anti-slavery sect. So I think there were easily several hundred anti slavery people in Kentucky at the time Lincoln lived there. But as it started in the 1790s the whole anti-slavery division seemed to dissolve around 1820. By that time the Lincolns along with a number of Kentuckians had headed north to Indiana.
