For the price of a Yamazaki Distiller's Reserve, I can pick up an Aberlour 12 NCF, Ardbeg Uigeadail, or a Highland Park ex-Sherry Single Cask for similar prices. I wonder if the prices of Japanese whiskies will ever come back down to earth? Would it take a market downturn for this to happen? Thanks for the video.

As a Mars fan, i completely agree with your statement with regards to sherry casks. Much better wood management on these or maybe they could finally buy some proper ones.

3 whiskies (Kagoshima, Yamanashi, Shinshu) aged together for 25 years (seperate 3 years) at Shinshu.

I've had a few of these - My favorite was a 2011 bottle, which had a nice lemon oil note to go with the peat. The others I have tried sound pretty similar to this... some more licorice than others. It's odd... I never noticed any peat in the old 18 year old. I never noticed any peat in the sanroku. So I wonder if this peated spirit was just for this series (I think distillery only?), or maybe blended into other stuff?

I wonder how many of these they made... I remember getting it in the gift shop when the 40th anniversary stuff was available, and was still able to buy it for another 5 years after that. I LOVED the bottle I opened, and really hope the others I have tucked away are the same stuff. I always thought it tasted like pickle juice - passion fruit sounds a lot more flattering, and is probably the same note!

You might want to try Hasegawa Liquor in the 2nd basement of Tokyo Station. The do a sampling programme so for 200/300 yen you can sample a wide range of whiskies up to 32-year-old whiskies, from all over the world. Jack, etc.

The weakening of the Japanese yen against the pound has finally caused the price of imported whisky to increase. As example, a 70cl bottle of Johnnie Walker Black has gone from 2,000 to 3,000 yen. So I I was thinking of switching to Japanese whisky to support the local economy and save myself a bit of money. This is the reason I'm not buying anymore Japanese whisky from Suntory or Nikka after this. Just stocking up what's out there right now and stick with it. There's better stuff out there for the price.

Yamazaki is absolutely overpriced….not worth it

Here in Tokyo if you can find it, the Yamazaki and Hakushu 12 are running ¥25980 while I have been eyeing a bottle of the Yoichi 10 at ¥29700. My understanding is that aged bottles in the Suntory line won’t be available for another 8-9 years so prices may continue to rise as more bottles are opened and there are even less bottles available. On the flip coin, if you go to Costco in the states the Suntory Yamazaki and Hakushu 12 are readily available at lower prices than here in Japan. And I’ve heard some are just collecting dust. The domestic whisky moves here in Tokyo as people are either drinking or collecting these bottles. I frequent at least a half dozen shops as I make my way around Tokyo during the week and if you see something aged, you should probably pick it up. I ran into a Hibiki 21 and went back a few days later and it had been sold at ¥99800. Realistically if your looking at a stock, the price of the Hibiki 21 is around the same amount you might put in an actual stock and some people, even investors might say the Hibiki 21 could be the better investment.

I thought this whole video was going to be an ode to Toki, but the offerings available in the states are too lacking

I got lucky when I moved to Tokyo and found the best whiskey store I have ever visited and it’s a five minute walk from my house. In Japanese bottles alone there are a couple dozen to choose from plus other whiskey’s from around the world with even more to choose. I wasn’t into whiskey when I moved here but a bottle of Nikka changed my perspective. Whenever I walk through Tokyo I always pop into a liquor store to look at the inventory and it didn’t dawn on me until after a couple years that no one had an inventory like my neighborhood store. I’m dumbfounded at Japanese whiskey prices outside of Japan when I see prices here in Tokyo in person. Almost makes me want to start an export whiskey business! Cheers.

You want the 80's release of the Super or the Revival release they had for a while which recreated the old 80's flavour with more Yoichi malt. However, that's discontinued. And I can add Nikka Black 50. It's a pure malt that again reminds me of musty old newspapers or Manga left in the woods for 10 years or so.

Agreed on some of the 25yo batches, Since you never know what you'll get hard pass for me too. Esquire: Is that secretly unpeated Bowmore? The older Gold (Black bottle, black and gold label) was stellar, this was indeed... less than stellar. (Stellar as in: Very old fashioned sherry cask whisky) With the Imperial: Batches vary, like with most of Suntory's stuff. Zen: I had old newspapers on the palate

Should be available at Shinanoya shops in Tokyo. It's distributed at Shinshu distillery and select retail partners of which Shinanoya is one.

Thank you for your video and knowledge, here in the United States you cannot even come close for the price or find the them. They're not existing. Only 20 plus dollar Japanese whiskey I can get without any regret still for 29.99 is a Toki. I did get royal via a friend traveling to Japan and a couple of other bottles. But here definitely you ain't going to find it or going to pay way too much. Thank you

The Malt Base has no grain whisky. It's a blended malt :)

One more silly fact I found of interest is that unlike most of other companies, Suntory does not finish whiskies. They fully mature whisky in different casks and then mix to the desired blend.

Still have one of these.... wish I had more. The 1990s was my favorite at the time I was visiting (still have a couple of those!), and 1980s was good as well, but the 2000s is about as good as it gets for me from a young(er) whisky.

Agreed, a fun place to hang out, have a bite, and drink some Nikka Whiskies! Your description is correct about the newer bottles not on the regular menu (like the Discovery Series). I used to get a pour of Yoichi 20 every now and then, which was a special treat. For Bangkok, their prices are very fair, especially the bottle prices.
