Barton Shifter Install Story-OMG

This is the story of my adventure installing the Barton Short Throw shifter for a 2017 Dodge Challenger Shaker. How watching other You Tube Videos helping and not helping to install the shifter. Plus my own drama with a Carriage Bolt that made the project harder than it needed to be . A must watch, very funny after its over.

    Don't get offended, but you should have never touched that shifter install as you did. You admit that your mechanical skills are limited, and something happened that you didn't expect. Are you really surprised? I'm 63 and I am not a professional mechanic, but I've been working on my own vehicles since I was 14, so you might say that I'm qualified to turn wrenches, I just never immersed myself in the "job" part of that experience. I have tons of mechanical knowledge and experience, but as a hobbyist, not a pro. I can perform most any repair or part swap without issue except for computer stuff and some electrical work. For that stuff, I always use a pro. I know my limitations. There are tricks that you learn in such a process, and unless you've been wrenching on cars since you were getting your first stinky finger from a girl, you should have never done this job alone, you should have a guy like me as a good friend and be humble enough to ask that friend for some help, pointers, about tricks he knows, about chemicals he uses in stuck bolt situations like yours. You could have paid your friend half of what you paid for that new shifter and had it done right. Hell, he may have done it for pizza and beer!

    Sounds like a typical project scenario that would happen to me always. I can't change a simple bulb on my car Without breaking something, causing a short circuit, starting a fire, burning my car my house and my neighbor's house down. Sometimes the simplest tasks brings new and unique challenges. To me only that is. Anyways glad you were able to finish the project at the end.

    So glad I watch this video. I just installed the Barton after watching the work play drive video. I drove the car down the street and wanting to take it back out. It’s vibrating noisy and sticky. I am thinking the Barton is overrated at this point. I’m going to turn that block around before I go back to the stock shifter. I hope this fixes my issues.

    Would heating the part near where the screw is threaded into it soften the locktite and allow the screw to come out easily?

    • @mopar1788
      @mopar1788 3 года назад

      That may be a way to break the lock loose, just don't heat it up too much. Do not apply to much pressure because it could break. Use a solvent to lose the part. Good luck.

    Thanks for sharing your Barton install story. There is a lot of satisfaction in working on your own car. No breakage during my install .... but I did have a couple of self-inflicted hiccups. First hiccup was after the complete install and I turned around to back out of the garage and saw the AC duct sitting in the back seat. DOH! Second hiccup was when it was time to put everything back together (again) and my 10mm socket had vanished. The socket had found it's way under the passenger-side WeatherTech mat. And, YES! Props to WorkPlayDrive!! I kept my iPad on the dash and used his video as a step-by-step installation guide.

    Hey man great video I put a barton in my challenger rt I just changed that rear block around like you mentioned shifts better now but do u have any issues goin from 1st too 2nd? Sometimes mine is a little nochie but all the other gears are smooth.

    • @mopar1788
      @mopar1788 4 года назад

      Yes, I found out it was the transmission. Get the shift delete, the original equipment makes you skip second gear. It sucks, so it feels like you struggle to get it engaged. It's called the skip shift delete, look it up on you tube to see what I am talking about. I hope this helps, let me know how it comes out. Thanks.

      @@mopar1788 im not sure thats it I drive mine in track mode so no skip shift and I get notchy shifts. Mostly in 3rd and 2nd. Sometimes even first when sitting at a light.
