AVS e Talk: Surface Microscopy and Microanalysis in an Industrial Research Laboratory
Просмотров 108Год назад
The top few nanometers of a sample is defined as the surface. The surface is where most chemical reactions take place. There are many instances where the surface of materials are designed/functionalized in order to optimize properties and improve device performance; there are other instances where the surface becomes compromised and the material/device performance degrades. Auger Electron Spect...

Great I met this Prof. at Erice.
How did Otto von Guericke suck out the air of the hemispheres?
He'd previously invented the first vacuum pump.
Ended up here after studying an idea of making a consumer product: a universal media converter, which would connect pairs of electronical pins over optical fiber, using directly-modulated lasers. Oh how I wish this process of growing films was more easily scalable and cheaper, we'd have so many more amazing technology, from better displays to fusion chamber igniters and insulators!
This was extremely exciting, thank you so much! <3
who else here for school?
Me
Thank you for this very helpful and informative video!
Beautiful presentation - thank you! BTW the electric lamp was invented in 1878 (first demonstrated on Dec 18th) in the UK by Joseph Swan, and there are other folk with strong claims in this too. Edison's first successful lamp was demonstrated on 22 October 1879.
Brilliant.brilliant.brilliant!!! You may want to take a look at *Promosm*!!!
Wait did she say we got better vacuums than space? Maybe she should clarify what part of "space" she is referring to, anything inside the heliosphere (edit) is not really space.
🤫
Where in space? Anywhere about 500ks above the surface of the earth where the density of gas particles is down to around 10,000 per cubic metre.. For context, down here on earth there are literally TRILLIONS per cubic centimetre.. 5.8 x 10 to the 18th power actually.. so that's 5,800,000,000,000,000,000 molecules, or 5,800 billion billion molecules, per cubic centimetre so, if you have a chamber with that many molecules, pushing on every square centimetre of the outside, and only 10,000 or so random stragglers zipping around inside, there's no f$@king way in hell you're ever pulling that apart. I have a vacuum pump which I use for degassing epoxy resin, it pulls a 98% vacuum on the chamber.. but even at 10%, it is literally IMPOSSIBLE to pull the lid off, or even move it with your fingers. The lid is a 20mm acrylic disc about 1 foot across, so that's about 108sq inches, with 14.7 pounds of outside air pushing down on each sq inch.. over 1580 pounds of force at full vac.. Even at 10% that's still 160 pounds of upwards force required to pull the lid off.. It could probably be done by hand.. but I like my fingernails attached to my fingers, so I haven't attempted this ;) on a side note, what do you mean by "plasomshpere"? That's not a word.
@@GenoLoma when I typed plasmosphere I failed to proof read my spelling. At first I started typing plasmasphere and changed it to heliosphere. If I would have proof read what I wrote you wouldn't have had to write out such a long drawn out reply. Or maybe you would have idk.
@@frankh.3849"Space" is anywhere devoid of an atmosphere. The generally accepted place where "space" begins, is 100 kilometres (60 miles) above the surface of the earth.. At that altitude you're above 99% of the earth's atmosphere, and life is impossible without some form of protection. Different planets would have different altitudes based on the density and volume of their respective atmospheres.. The moon for instance, has almost no atmosphere, so space begins at the surface.. Jupiter on the other hand, has a dense rocky core about the size of the planet Mercury, but then has over 65,000 kilometres of gasses heaped on top.. so space begins well above that.. The Heliosphere stretches out past the area of the Kuiper Belt.. 'Interstellar' (the space between stars) space begins out there, but 'regular' space begins a lot closer to home..
Great learning video! Thanks Dr. Law
please tell what do your avs stand for please ? meaning ?

An adjastable wrench is the worst choice of all, since it is the easiest way to mess nuts. For the small flange (CF4-1/2 or CF63 in metric notations), as shown in video, this is not that bad compared to bigger flanges. A 1/2-inch (or 13 metric) fork (open-end) wrench would be the better choice, but the box-end or socket wrench would be the best choice for preserving the nuts in a good shape.
Gurus work here 🙂
what happens if i tight a NPT fitting all the way? to make it shorter
that causes additional outwards pressure that can crack the outer fitting.
Von Guericke (1602-1686) must have begun quite early in his life with attempts to produce a vacuum, given that these attempts are reported to be more than 400 years ago, at 7:18ff.
The best video on MBE that I have seen! Another great reason to be a AVS member.
Nicely done!
